Virginity and saving yourself for marriage made a lot more sense when you got married at around 18-22 years old, back in the 1950s and before. Your a spinster if you haven't gotten married by 25 by that philosophy. Being engaged was not a matter of years, but months. It just gave you enough time to plan the wedding party that was 1-3 months later. Wedding parties were probably far simpler affairs back then too, more appropriate for young people's budgets. I would say today, people who have moved in together and are stable are practically in a marriage like relationship.

If your saving yourself for marriage, your also marrying young, preferably with another churchy person. It doesn't make much sense otherwise. Being super picky was a really bad idea back then. Merging the modern be picky and marry at 30 and saving yourself for virginity is a recipe for misery.

Technically, virginity has only referred to vaginal sex, but for generations, "good girls" would always use alternate means to keep the boyfriend from getting it somewhere else. That means they'd do any number of things, stopping short of letting him put it in the kitty cat.

The difference between Lolo and Tebow is that Tebow has had to face naysayers his whole football career. He has learned how to overcome it and win the PR battle at the same time. Boomer Esiason said that the Jets should cut him this week. Tebow, when asked about it, just smiled and wished Esiason the best of luck in the future with his broadcasting. There was no crying or lashing back.

Track and Field is a niche sport at best in the US. After the games are over, nobody really remembers 99.9% of the Olympians. It's only the ones that get endorsement deals that stay in the public eye. Using ESPN The Magazine's Body Issue doesn't really prove a point. Lots of athletes in different sports pose. Track athletes are only relevant every 4 years, so if various companies and the media are approaching you about opportunities, you have to strike while the iron is hot. And yeah, not everyone gets the opportunities. Those opportunities have never been about who has accomplished more either. Lolo can't run track forever, so should she say no to the money? She needs to set up her next career. Dawn Harper hating on her is understandable, but out of line also. Yeah, she was the gold medalist in '08 because Lolo clipped that hurdle. Jones was leading and pulling away. It isn't Lolo's fault that companies like her look, story and personality more than her's. Some folks just need to be content with their own accomplishments, and not the attention.

As for the article, it definitely seemed like the author had an axe to grind. Lolo Jones is not unaccomplished in her sport - she's won titles and held records. She is only lacking an Olympic medal. Anna Kournikova didn't win a single individual title in her whole career (she was at one time part of the top doubles team with Martina Hingis). Lolo Jones also battled injuries during the last 4 years (including spinal surgery), and it was actually an accomplishment to make the team at all. Having said all this, whining about the article was weak on her part. Fame, openness, popularity, etc. carry with it criticism, even if it is outrageous and misplaced. That's part of the game. I also thought it was weak when Hope Solo went after a commentator for critical comments made when doing her job - providing analysis of the action. It isn't the responsibility of the media to cheer and support you (though objectivity disappeared from all forms of media long ago - everyone has their own rooting interests and agendas). It does say something that the Times themselves, on review, admitted that the article was harsh - you don't often see media outlets express regret over what was largely an opinion/editorial piece.

I don't have a problem with Lolo. She dealt with this whole thing the way chicks do - emotionally. There are plenty more women far more overexposed than she's ever been - remember, we've only been hearing about her in the run-up to two Olympic games, but not a peep in the 4 years between. We have other dumb bitches forced on us on a daily basis, and most of them are far less accomplished than Lolo.
