Observation of American Blacks in Argentina
What are your observations on how African Americans are treated when they travel to South America? Im going to Argentina for the first time in the later part of this year and Im wondering... How are Americans (especially African Americans) viewed in Argentina?

It's been discussed already pretty extensively in a few different threads, search back. I was never treated with any rudeness. You should be okay. I've spoken to a few black women that have been to Argentina and they get pounced on by Argentine guys. I wish the women were like that too.

RE: Observation of American Blacks in Argentina
Race is a touchy subject, to put it mildly, in almost all Latin American countries. However, depending on where you go the issues are different. Brazil is incredibly diverse, with a huge degree of racial mixing. As a general rule, the whiter you are, the richer you are - yes, there are exceptions, but overall race is a good indicator of social class.

Argentina by contrast is probably the most homogeneous country I've ever been in (blacks make up about 0.1% of the population). It is incredibly rare to see a black or Asian person, and any non-whites I met were foreign. None of them complained of any racism, either overt or discrete, but that's not to say they didn't encounter any problems there. I went out one night in B.A. with a group including one black American guy, but he was pretty quiet and didn't approach, so I can't say from personal experience how Argentine girls react to black guys. Nobody gave him any hassle though. I also met a really good-looking English black girl in Brazil who'd been to B.A. and she said the Argies were all over her in clubs etc.

There are tons of Asians in Argentina...there's even a mini "China town" in Buenos Aires.

I didn't see Chinatown when I was in B.A. No doubt there's a significant minority, but compared to the Chinatowns in places like NYC or London it would probably be quite small (correct me if I'm wrong though).

The most common minority I saw in Buenos Aires were mestizo and/or indigenous S. Americans from poorer countries like Bolivia. There were certainly quite a few particularly in working class barrios like La Boca.

However in many other neighbourhoods or the city centre, there were many times I was walking down the street and literally everbody was white. Where I live is far more homogeneous than the US, but in the bigger cities it is still normal to see people of Pakistani, Indian, Chinese or Afro-Carribean backgrounds. There is a more noticable presence of Asian people in Scotland or England than in Argentina.

I don't know about "tons of Asians", that's pushing it. I don't recall seeing a single Asian during my week and a half in Argentina. You're probably talking about a fraction of 1% of the population. Keep in mind though that Chinese people are EVERYWHERE, which is one benefit to being 1/4th world's population. Even in the middle of Africa, there's Chinese people.

I know that we all know at least 97% of Argentina is white. I misspoke saying that are "tons of asians".

In anecdotal terms ,I saw asians pretty often when I lived in Buenos Aires. Of course in the Chinatown, but also in other places ranging from asian owned grocery stores, hundreds at the immigration center, some friends of friends who are asian, etc.
