A lot of people forget that "All Along The Watchtower" was originally written by Bob Dylan. Jimi's version is infinitely better:

And I've always thought The Beatles version of "Twist and Shout" was the best. Lennon gives one of the great rock vocal performances of all time. Apparently he couldn't talk for a week after recording his version.

Always liked the Fat Boys rendition of "The Twist"

Ofcourse Wet Wet Wet also killed it with their version of "Love is all around", but maybe saying that belongs in the songs your embarassed to admit you like

As a huge Pumpkins fan, I'm not inclined to say the Bad Rabbits cover of "1979" is better than the original...but it's incredibly beautiful. Great find.

Came in to post this. I wouldn't say it's better, but it's definitely a brilliant take on an already dark song.

Even Trent Reznor agrees that it's a brilliant version of the song.

I assume everyone knows the original from The Rolling Stones

I'd live with my girlfriend, but I don't think her husband would like that.

Godsmack's redux of Joe Walsh's Rocky Mountain Way fits the bill for me.

RE: Covers That Were Better Than the Originals
My comment is that most of the versions are very similar to the originals. Which one you like is based on which one you heard first. If you've listened to a song hundreds of time, it’s hard to like a new one as well. I think the Jimi Hendrix versions of Hey Joe and All Along the Watchtower are better than the original. Rocky Mountain Way is similar to the Joe Walsh's, but I'm much more familiar with that one. I like the original Hotel California by the Eagles Better. I like Patti Smyth "Because the Night" better because much more familiar with it. I like the Lynyrd Skynyrd version of “Simple Man” better. In fact listen “Always Somewhere” by the Scorpions which is just their stealing “Simple Man” and reworking it.

Don't think I saw Blinded By The Light by Manfred Mann. Far superior to the original Springsteen version, #2 after Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower on this list.

I'll go for Will Whitmore on this one:

will ferrell makes this italian song classic

That Tao of Steve states that, yes, all women will eventually be won over if you:
1.) Eliminate your desires.
2.) Do something excellent in her presence, thereby proving your sexual worthiness.
3.) Retreat, for as Heidegger said, "We pursue that which retreats from us".
