RE: Russian language: no more bullshit
@turkishcandy Some videos/series on the channel don't have subtitles, but others do, like the series I mentioned. For example, in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oW3aSnSH_-M (Шулер episode 1), I can choose subtitles in russian (they match perfectly), english or auto-generated. I think that for the more recent series, they stopped including the subtitles unfortunately.

Yeah, the spripts on vvord.ru are not made into subtitles. What I did for Маленькая Вера for example, was printing the scripts and trying to follow the movie with them. It was a bit harder to follow everything than with subtitles but it still was very helpful.

I've been watching mad men with Russian dubbing and English subtitles. It was an accident to torrent the Russian dubbed version but I said oh awesome i can use this to learn haha. There are many dub voices so very enjoyable to watch.
Strange to me that i haven't seen anything where they mute the English track. That was very overwhelming at first.

Im doing Russian on DuoLingo also....I'll look you up

I've been searching for something I thought I saw on RVF. Someone made an anki set of words that were more suited for talking to girls. Anyone see that? Or am I just hallucinating. Thanks in advance for your help.

RE: Russian language: no more bullshit
Hi I just joined this forum. After 3-4 years of passively learning Russian, I am able to speak freely in Russian. Here is my advice to you.

Download this textbook: Essential Russian Grammar.
Find a willing partner to help you on a site like interpals.net

Russian is quite an attainable language to learn for EN native speakers and I can't fathom why everyone thinks otherwise. Grammar isn't even that bad honestly.

When I was living/traveling in the ex-USSR countries (Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan and Armenia) women were super receptive towards me. Sadly, I wasn't really into game, and to be fair, I was not confident or handsome at the time. In spite of it all, they still were flirting with me anyway, so that goes to show what learning the language does.

I found a funny Russian Instagram account. It's short native-level Russian videos, but you can get a lot of the cultural humor without understanding everything. And the lizard is pretty hot (despite recent arm tattoos and probably implants).

Here's a funny cuck-humor clip(YouTube embedded below). I've translated, but I'm not a native Russian speaker, so help me out if I've fucked them up:

Про черт, что здесь происходит? Что это за ???? (What the hell's going on here? ???)
Господи, Юра, это мой научный руководитель. (It's my professor)
Слава богу, я даже то и не подумал. Идём. (I didn't even think, let's go)
Я так и знал. Закончена. (I knew it, it's over!)
Юра, стой, это мой двойродны брат. Арнольд. (Stop, it's my cousin, Arnold)
Юрий, подай пожалуйста мою сумочку. (Give me my purse please)
Всегда пожалуйста. Прикол, презервативы в сумочке. А как они туда попали? (Of course. Cool, condoms in your purse. How did they get there?)
До аптеки в пальце купила, потом подумала зачем. (I bought them at the drugstore, then I wondered why)
Господи, смешные только. (Hilarious)
Аппарата выключила. (The phone has been switched off)
Наверно на фитнесе. (Probably at the gym)
На кого эти цветочки? (Who are the flowers from?)
Я просто купила себе для настроения. (I bought them for myself to improve my mood)

@eldefou cool vid man. BTW, I noticed from the vid title, the word for "cuck" or "whiped" is подкаблучник, which literally means a guy who is "under the heels" of his girl (high heel shoes = каблуки), basically a guy that gets walked over.

She is pretty hot. Pity about those tattoos. Still, I rarely see an average-looking and not-especially-alpha dude like him with a 9ish* wife like her in the US. Really makes you think.

"подкаблучник" (the term for whipped) that Gopnik pointed out is awesome. Gonna have to try to remember that one.

I thought I saw that too. All I could find was a post you shared some time ago, but... the Russian link you shared has so many decks that I didn't go through them all (https://ankiweb.net/shared/decks/russian). Is this what you meant? Hopefully it's in there somewhere.

From what I understand you can make your own flashcards. Then there are sets of premade flashcards that you can download. Many for for free (some request a donation). I think it is a good way to see if flashcards work for you or not.

There are many different language decks, I linked to Russian because that is what I am working on.

After about a year of hard studying while living in Ukraine I felt like I was conversational. By "hard studying" I mean two to four hours a day without skipping days. I started with Pimsleur, I was pretty familiar with German and Latin already (either language will help a lot with Russian) and people consider me "good at languages" so it might take longer for other people.

Bucky, I think the reason people say you are good with languages is because you apply yourself to what you are studying. Cal Newport, in the book Deep Work, calls it focused success. Obviously, I don't know you. I congratulate you on your successful language learning. You probably are more intelligent than most people. I'm just trying to say that anyone can learn a foreign language. The secret is that you have to work hard to get what you want in life.

^^Root. I've written before on here, but the gold standard with learning Russian is one-on-one language lessons, no English allowed. You do 2-3 lessons a week without skipping and you'll be conversational in 6 months.

Find someone to tutor you. Better in person, but can also do Skype, or whatever. I once paid some guy in Kiev $4/hour to tutor me Russian on Skype.

Spoke Russian to a middle aged black taxi driver from Nigeria yesterday. Take in mind this is over in London, very interesting experience. He was a student in Yugoslavia during the 1980s and was explaining how it was the best years of his life.

I've been learning Russian with a tutor lately. I'd highly recommend it, especially if you get stuck while learning on your own (like I did).

Anyway, I was transcribing an audio of people ordering at a cafe, and decided to put it into Google translate. Here's a snippet of it:
Man: Девушка, извините, можно счёт.
Waitress: Да, конечно, сейчас.
Which Gulag turned into:
Man: Girl, I'm sorry, you can score.
Waitress: Yes, of course, now.

RE: Russian language: no more bullshit
I am trying to understand the russkaya dusha/язык with help of tv shows, not a easy task.
Let's talk about "Тайны следствия" (this serial got prizes even in other countries). In one of the old episodes (well at least 5 years old) the end scene is the main character (a female cop, she is IMO the most famous female cop of the Russian tv) says something like "well, this is not our business" as a mafia killer is killed by another mafiosi right in the front of the police station/prison. While the guys is dying outside, this cop "Maria" goes back to the station and closes the door "Eto nie nasha dela". This is what I call bad ass cop.

The other tv show is "Возвращение Мухтара". In one of the old episodes, the crew was looking for the murder and for that mission they also have to interrogate people in the criminal world.
One of the cops (red hair boy) goes to a brothel alone and interviews a well, let's say, voluptuous prostitute. She says something like... "I can't help you with that but I can help you with something else". Then she kisses him and bring him to the room to have sex. The cop agrees and goes with her, just like that. Also quite bad ass.
Both episodes I am talking about have been aired this year (as reprises), but I dont remember exactly the day I watched them.

It shows that cops are also human beings, with weaknesses and feelings. Both situations would never be possible in a "prime time" tv show in the West (with their quite hypocrite political correctness).

I dunno. I'm pretty sure you have similar scenes in game of thrones and other American productions. Confused

It's taken me 700+ hours in about 1 year and I still have not mastered an ability to conversate other than "typical american greetings" whereby you exchange pleasantries, maybe a name, and then move on.

It doesn't help there are no russian people around me to conversate with.
I don't use internet outside of work(50+hrs wk) and download youtube russian music videos & subtitled russian movies to watch later and practice the language, so therefore I don't use skype or anything to reach out for more help, though I'm not in a rush to learn.
I also know spanish so that has really helped with piecing the words together with the right intonation. I also use music lyrics with a russian, transliterated russian, and english format to help learn the words as well.
It does require dedication that's for sure. Just keep at it and keep practicing, I even speak aloud the letters and phrases throughout my day. Whenever and wherever you can fit it in does help. Good luck!

I doubt it. Remember that your lower level, millenial leftist isn't good at critical thinking. They're largely like trained dogs who emote in response to programmed cues like the word "racism" and "socialism". Easy_C

I was talking about major (non exotic) police tv shows, like for example Columbo or Law and Order. GoT is a fantasy stuff too far from reality, not a bad serial thou, but it looks like anything goes there.

You might try getting an on-line tutor. I've got two on-line tutors who I found on http://www.preply.com who I talk to once or twice a week just to stay in practice with my Russian. One charges $3/hr, the other $4/hr.
