Asia and Southeast Asia Expat Thread
Is anyone living or working in Asia or Southeast Asia?
It seems that the Coronavirus may spread to Thailand, Vietnam, or Singapore. What are you doing to protect yourselves?

This isn’t the post I was expecting. Don’t we have a corona virus thread already?

After talking to a young lady for a while, she told me “Even though your skin is black, I can tell your heart is white.”

I wanted to move to Singapore but now I am worried.
Are people wearing masks there?
Singapore seems to have a good health care system so they
should be able to handle any infections and pandemics.

I wonder if any expats are stuck in china and cannot fly out due to
all the flights being cancelled. That would suck.

I'm looking for opportunities to move from Hong Kong to Singapore in the coming year as a scrum master. I heard they're hiring expats less and less over to SG now.

What is a scrum master?
What kind of companies need these.
How to get into these positions?

A scrum master will make you work more. Avoid them like the plague.

Agile sc®um is basically micromanagement. If your company introduces agile sc®um and hires scrum masters, it's time to look for a new job.

I thought agile is the modern approach?

Most companies are using it.

What about kanban?

The problem is agile vs. Agile™.

The idea of agile started decades ago with The Agile Manifesto. Good things rarely result from any kind of manifesto, and this was no different, but the core of it was fine. The idea is that top-down planning doesn't work, estimation is hard, needs change over time (sometimes very suddenly, especially nowadays), teams need to be able to adapt quickly, and decisions should be made by the people who will be responsible for delivering on them as much as possible rather than pointy-haired bosses who don't understand the realities of the job.

All those, as rules of thumb, are fine. But, inevitably, everything becomes a religion. A manifesto that was all about getting rid of pointless process and management-heavy structures got perverted and now there are "agile consultants", agile training camps, religious wars about when to have standup, meetings on meetings on meetings for planning the week, the month, the quarter, the year, etc., and spreadsheets full of OKRs and tracking "velocity" and all other sorts of buzzwords. All pushed by pointy-haired boss types trying to insert themselves into a process that doesn't need them at all. It became the Office Space farce it was intended to up-end, except now you don't even have a cubicle, you're in an open office with no privacy at all, maybe without even a consistent computer from day to day. Progress!

Kanban et al are just iterations on this theme. If a kanban board works for you, great, go for it. If it doesn't, find something else. But if you've got middle managers butting in and micromanaging and spending lots of time and money reading about this or that hierarchy and why kanban is way better than XP, oh wait, no, five minutes have passed, now Foo is the hot thing and kanban sucks, oh wait, no, Bar is the hot thing - fuck Foo!

Then you've missed the boat.

There's no gov't imposed quarantine but folks are staying in and lining themselves up to buy masks.

Shenzhen checking in lol, getting paid for doing nothing.

Too bad most of the people are being told to stay in their apartments by the government.

Really wasn't expecting a conversation about system analysis and design when I clicked this thread.

I’m interested in 4 places out there: Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. For those that have been to all, which place is your favorite?

I've only been to Japan and Taiwan, but I recommend both. I want to recommend Taiwan between the two just becauses it's often overlooked by people traveling through Asia. Taipei is fun, good people, and the rest of the island is beautiful.

It does look gorgeous. Lots of outdoorsy things from the look of it. How was the air quality out there?

I'm in SZ as well. It's a ghost town.

Sadly, everyone's sequestered away. I went out to get some coffee the other day and I took off my respirator for a moment to take a sip and people were looking at me like I'd committed some grave sin.

Generally good. The cities have the usual amount of smog from industry and motorbikes, but about what you'll find in an American city of the same size, so on the high-quality end by Asian standards. That's the case for just about everything about Taiwan - it's not quite as _____ as Japan or Singapore or the US, but much much closer to them than China/Thailand/whatever.

There is a "season" in Taiwan, though, where the winds generally blow a particular direction and it causes lots of air pollution from China to come over. Kinda sad.

How is Shenzen now?
I can't believe that BEijing is under quarantine now.
This must be killing the Chinese economy. How are people
supposed to go to work or get paid. Not all jobs can
be done remotely by computer. I've heard even the Apple
Factories are shutting down.
OTOH, Hong Kong seems to be safer from Mainland politics
and Carrie Lamb still has a job. But still lots of chinese people
can die or get infected.
I hope they can find some sort of vaccine or cure, but it just
seems to be so dangerous that only HIV and flu drugs can treat it.
