Stop Calling Me a Troll
[attachment=8956]
Just because you disagree with me doesn’t mean I am one.

http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/technology/2012/12/i_m_not_a_troll_why_does_everyone_on_the_internet_keep_calling_me_one.single.html#pagebreak_anchor_2

"The other day I wrote a column criticizing iTunes. It was somewhat harsh. “Each new upgrade brings more suckage into your computer,” I argued under the headline, “Won’t Someone Take iTunes Out Back and Shoot It?” Predictably, the column got some people riled up. Commenters complained that I was getting unnecessarily overheated, that I didn’t have my priorities straight (“first world problem!”), and that my subjective opinion of the software was simply incorrect. None of these comments bothered me. Well, OK, they bothered me a little bit, because I want everyone to be won over by my genius insights. But there are loads of dissenters on every column I write, so nothing about this situation was particularly unusual.

I was slightly more annoyed, though, by the few comments that suggested I was being disingenuous—that the headline and my stridency were evidence that I didn’t actually believe the horseshit I’d written. Instead, I was just being controversial for controversy’s sake..."

I've noticed we can sometimes be quick to call troll here sometimes, and as the full article states, much the way the term "political correctness" has been re-defined, so has the troll and trolling. Now, anytime someone blurts out something and other challenge or disagree, people will call troll instead of simply disagreeing and debating. It's a long, but interesting piece...

I think everyone at RVF likes to troll every now and again for humor's sake, myself included.

el mech likes to troll Neil, Ali likes to troll choche, almost everyone likes trolling Brian, IRT likes trolling everyone here, etc.

I don't consider guys joking around or teasing each other trolling.

For me, trolls are not really those guys who post nonsensical stuff on inflammatory issues (conspiracy theories, abortion, aids, blah blah blah) and then watch the heated discussion while fanning the flames, but rather people who go on blogs to complain and rage against something without ever providing any argument other than their own anger.

In other words, almost all game denialists.

How do I define a troll?

RE: How Do You Define Trolling? - freshcream - 12-07-2012 11:39 AM

I think the troll card gets pulled a bit easy here...

RE: How Do You Define Trolling? - Kitsune - 12-07-2012 12:04 PM

Anyone who disagrees with me is trolling.

RE: How Do You Define Trolling? - Joga Bonito - 12-07-2012 12:16 PM

Writing comments or statements with the only objective being to spark controversy or some sort of polemic.

RE: How Do You Define Trolling? - Tuthmosis - 12-07-2012 12:18 PM

This is how I define trolling: Troll

When I was a teenager I found a site of cat ladies talking about their cats and other boring shit all day. I started a thread called "how do you even feed these things?" and then the went batshit. I guess that qualifies as trolling.

RE: How Do You Define Trolling? - CMan0928 - 12-07-2012 05:09 PM

Sorry, but you guys got me addicted to making these IRT memes.

RE: How Do You Define Trolling? - Duke Castile - 12-07-2012 05:19 PM

Well there's acceptable trolling and then there's outright douchebaggery trolling. Then there's our duty to troll someone who's being an idiot. Reverse trolling if you will. Mechanico has made a career out of it. In DR he was causing Ali to meltdown every 5 hours.

Cman you are really getting good at those!

I thank you, sir. If I suddenly disappear from the forums you'll know IRT discovered my identity/location.

Is it just me or does IRT look a tad like Alberto? lol

RE: How Do You Define Trolling? - el mechanico - 12-07-2012 05:39 PM

And please explain that avatar

It's just called Meme Generator (Free Edition). Works like a charm and takes all of 10 seconds to create a meme. Very simple and quick. Love it. As for the avatar, have you ever seen that show "Finding Bigfoot" on, I think, Animal Planet? Don't, it's god awful. But the guys name is James Fay. He is insane. A guy that's been chasing Bigfoot for like 20 years or something crazy like that. Joe Rogan had him on his podcast not long ago. It was epic. Think of everything women might find attractive in a guy, and then think the polar opposite. That's James Fay.

Awesome! I like you.

That guy looks like the first adult whos ass I kicked when I was a kid for yelling at my mom in my driveway. I want to punch the screen when I see it.

Trolling is a purposeful attempt at derailing of a topic or thread based on an individual's either narrow minded or extremist views or beliefs. The end result being inciting rage in others involved in the discussion because he can't sway them to his opinion.

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. I guess I lead a unique and colorful life. Laugh
