New HBO show and the best Ive seen on TV since Breaking Bad.
This weeks episode #4 totally blew my mind. A 6 minute long one-shot sequence that couldve been out of a Scorsese movie. The atmosphere in this show is INTENSE.

Brilliant storywriting, cinematography and acting... Harrelson and McConnaughey are absolute bosses.

So dont miss out.

Show is boss as fuck.

You're right: last episode was sick.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - WestIndianArchie - 02-11-2014 12:34 PM

This show, fuck...

I feel sorry for your mother if you aren't watching it.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - Suits - 02-11-2014 02:04 PM

I tried watching it. Couldn't even make it through two episodes.

It's an amazing show. Pure art. But it is so damn slow.

Love the show, fantastic script and setting.

Unfortunately thanks to MikeCF's teachings, all I can think of when I see Matthew McConaughey is "look at that incredible glowing skin, he must have access to top quality HGH!"

Show is pure gold and being slow is what makes it perfect! think about it, all shows about fighting and gun shooting but nobody really pay attention to the dialogues because there are none or they are very shallow. Here you really need to listen to them, Matthew and Woody are incredible and their characters are what they made of them, one negative thinker whose mouth is as big as his tortuous experience and the other a narrow minded, centered guy from country soil but the monster behind the events make the 2 of them to work in a fantastic journey to stop Reggie Ladoux. Last episode was amazing! great actors, slow tempo but makes every ending chapter like some junkie shoot being loaded to your brain. and you cant wait till the next episode. Brilliant. Idea is not different from any other show about cops but the real story being told and acted is what makes this show really a fresh clean air.

The pseudo-smart dialogue is not enough. Being different on surface is not enough. Think of those film critics who proclaim some slow ass European movie as a masterpiece, just because it's so obviously different from a prevailing fast-cutting Hollywood norm.

Yet, beyond its surface True Detective is no different from a typical American mass-disseminated lazy garbage. It is garbage because the show uses killjoy murders as a way to advance the story, and everyone in it. As such it is no different than any other dramatic American TV series in the past XX number of years (to name some obvious examples: Mike Hammer, Streets of San Francisco, McCloud, Twin Peaks, Sopranos, Rome, Deadwood, Wire, Weeds, CSI, Shield, Justified, Sons of Anarchy, True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, etc, etc.) because it wallows in (early and often) representations of all sorts of murdered humans, usually done in some spectacular fashion or another.

In the first five minutes of True Detective we are shown nude + raped + killed woman as a way to get our attention. If the show is so "smart" why does it have to use tired, cheap, over-the-top cliche? Because the dialogue without sensational "crutches" on its own will not stand. Not with American audiences who are so reared on a steady diet of wide variety of TV murders, that they don't even realize how abnormal that whole thing is. So the producers are feeding the status quo beast by continually appealing to audiences primal instincts.

And the audiences are only happy to oblige.

Cue in B & B:

Show is the bomb. It's slow, but it's picking up. Great character development through dialogue. In a way would be like Heat...where it's two larger than life actors together, and the story is character and dialogue driven. McConauhey and Harrelson together on a TV show? That's huge. Big ups.

Also, McConauhey's frame control and deadpan delivery is worth observing and learning from.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - WesternCancer - 02-13-2014 10:06 AM

Just caught up on this show.

Personally everything about it seems very cliche. But it is all done so well that it is trying to pay homage to and set the benchmark for etective flicks

That being said it took me till episode 4 to keep wanting more.

The negativity of rusts character was almost too much at the beginning, Maybe it's because i feel as if I'm like that some times. It seems that they're starting to show both of these dudes are completely full of shit. Rust is all about the truth, but like martin says he has a preconceived narrative in his head that he subconsciously veers towards.

Interesting though, I'll definitely watch more.

In fairness, has there been anything good on TV since Breaking Bad ended?
I'm just waiting for House of Cards (if that counts) and the next half-season of Mad Men.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - WestIndianArchie - 02-13-2014 11:14 AM

LOL at thinking the plot is why people love this show.
it's like watching nbc's Hannibal for the murder of the week.

WIA

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - Vicious - 02-13-2014 11:30 AM

I hear there's tits shown so I might give it a shoot.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - Macklin - 02-13-2014 12:48 PM

just caught up on all 4 episodes and I'm hooked.

The ending of the 4th episode was a insane and looked like it was out of a movie. I have no idea where the rest of the season will go but excited for it.

Also, the acting is top notch, especially McConaughey.

Harrelson's character's mistress's tits are divine. Full and ripe.

Damn, a lot of apostrophes for a lot of titties.

Yes some really nice teddies on display in episode 2

Would motorboat.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - Slim Shady - 02-21-2014 05:38 PM

McConaughey did a Kimmel interview. Apparently his and Harrelson's stories are donezo after the first season so only a couple more episodes to go. I guess the two were always bigger than the show. New stars for the next season, in a new location with a new story. Maybe we luck out with Bryan Cranston, or maybe Clint Eastwood...

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - FrenchCanadian - 02-21-2014 07:07 PM

To be fair, I think it's a lot less cliche then most mainstream detective shows, where stuff like this happens

I think it's good TV honestly, liking it, and House of Cards too.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - MHaes - 03-07-2014 08:08 AM

Last Sunday's episode was pretty good. Can't wait for the finale.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - NFallin - 03-09-2014 11:34 PM

Damn....kinda came up short for me.

Interesting interview with the writer here:
http://www.buzzfeed.com/kateaurthur/true-dectective-finale-season-1-nic-pizzolatto

Quote:The show sets up a world in which evil men conspire to do terrible things to women and children, and that less bad men are in charge of trying to stop them. (Or, as Rust would put it, the “world needs bad men — we keep the other bad men from the door.”) Seems accurate to me. Is that your worldview, or is that just the show and the characters?

NP: Well, that’s certainly the view of Cohle, but nothing in him represents my views on anything. I think True Detective is portraying a world where the weak (physically or economically) are lost, ground under by perfidious wheels that lie somewhere behind the visible, wheels powered by greed, perversity, and irrational belief systems, and these lost souls dwell on an exhausted frontier, a fractured coastline beleaguered by industrial pollution and detritus, slowly sinking into the Gulf of Mexico. There’s a sense here that the apocalypse already happened. And in places like this, where there’s little economy and inadequate education, women and children are the first to suffer, by and large. There’s a line in a Sherlock Holmes story where Holmes explains to Watson that the evils of the city pale in comparison to the horrors of the isolated countryside, where who knows what terrors exist in the lonely farmhouse, cut off from civilization and beholden to no oversight? I always sensed that.

Regarding bad men being necessary to stop the other bad men, that’s probably more true than I’d like it to be, but the point exists outside of gender: You need physically capable, courageous, and potentially violent people to deal with the violent, dangerous people.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - Slim Shady - 03-10-2014 12:20 AM

The final scene in carcosa, that was unreal. Basement scene from "lambs" + basement scene from "zodiac" + crazy cosmic shit.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - TravellerJay - 03-10-2014 12:47 PM

Amazing show, sick, entertaining. Great actors, suspense that kills you.., I will miss them

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - megatron - 03-10-2014 01:25 PM

Loved it. Can't wait for season 2 (new storyline, new characters and obviously, actors).

In 5 years, they will be saggy.

Sad

Fate, thou art cruel.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective - lavidaloca - 03-10-2014 01:35 PM

I found the ending slightly disappointing. While the scenes leading up to it were very powerful including the final chase it seemed to come up short and left a lot of questions unanswered.

It is without a doubt the best show I've seen on television.
