Quiet male contemplation are extremely inspiring.

I had forgotten that Vermeer ever painted a dude.

Thanks for this.

Francois 1er, glorious king of France, womanizer and great castle-builder, at the deathbed of Leonard de Vinci, whom he (unfortunately?) much admired and whose architectural advice he (fortunately?) followed:

from François-Guillaume Ménageot:

and, more famous, painting by Ingres

Providing a better link below, for the Francois 1er-Leonardo da Vinci famous painting by Ingres. As you can see, the gallant French king considered Leonardo da Vinci as his own (spiritual) father, hence his presence and despair at the deathbed of the Italian artist.

Romantic Realism contains a streak of optimism and progress one is hard-pressed to find in the modern-day art world.

Old post, but I've always been a fan of Bryan Larsen.

On the painting, there´s Russian soldier Jevgenij Rodionov, who was captured by Chechen islamic militants in 1996. They forced him to take cross down from his neck and accept islam with threat of death. He refused.
He was tortured for 3 months and on the day of his 19th birthday, they cut off his head.
His mother went to Chechnya to find his head to bury him. She had to pay to militants (there´s a rumour she had to sell her flat to get money) and was beaten up by militants (suffered multiple injuries).

On Thursday, Jevgenij would celebrate his 42nd birthday.

Pulp illustration is generally frowned upon (or enjoyed on a Kitsch level) but have always liked Virgil Finlay's work and technique, spanning from the Flash Gordon-esque to the Lovecraftian.

Another Frazetta! (sue me!)

'Castle of Sin' (1978) for Playboy Magazine.

No 'positive values' you say? Just a load of T & A? Well, no .... take another look. Who's that shadowy figure lurking under the archway, waiting to ambush our lustful hero? Methinks this has something to say about the need to be wary regarding the intentions of the fairer sex and being in control of your impulses.

If something looks 'too good to be true ....'

Absolutely beautiful, I've never really been into art, but I think it's because of the garbage coming out post 1970, I never knew timeless beauty of this kind existed

Thick paint. Blurred edges. Muted color with splashes of warmth.

Quiet shared moments can be inspirational too, can't they?

Not to derail the topic but here's one of my favorite threads from a very popular architecture/construction forum: it's filled with pictures of recent projects from all over the world that were built in a traditional style. Very inspiring if you can't stand the madness that is modern architecture.
