Useful lifehacks - No More Mr. Soy Boy - 09-25-2019 05:24 PM

I learned pretty recently that I can keep bananas from the store fresh longer if I wash them and wrap the stem. Heard some theory that this is because fruit flies tends to lay eggs there (and bacteria grows) and because bananas release ethylene gas through their stems.

Anyway, this has been working great for me.

If you have your flight cancelled or sometimes very delayed ask at the counter for discount/free hotel room, meal voucher, other stuff. More often than not they give those out. (As long for the most part is not a cheap airline like Spirit)

The dosing regiment Ive used to avoid getting sick or greatly speed up recovery from common cold, cough for many years.
It obviously doesnt have 100% success and its not medical advice.

When you get the slightest symptom that youre about to get sick take:

- 3-4 pills of a standard multivitamin that has a recommended dose of 1-2 pills
- 2000mg upto 6000mg of Vitamin C
- 4000 upto 7000 IU of Vitamin D
- gargle with diluted hydrogen peroxide for incoming sore throat

The goal is to mega dose and there is no risk of overdose (unless you have some other medical condition)

Then on subsequent days you can cut back on multi and vitamin d to a lower dose and keep vitamin c around the same level.

Good stuff. To add to that I would say zinc seems to be of big importance (at least in the beginning) according to science.

I’ve got tons of cooking hacks, mostly from working in restaurant kitchens for a long time.

Here’s a good one: to quickly peel a head of garlic, put the cloves in a Mason Jar and shake it like crazy for 20 seconds. You gotta shake it good, though. Most of them should be peeled and the ones that don’t you can easily remove the peel. If you don’t have a Mason Jar, any kind of enclosed container should work.

You can buy meat at about half the price if you buy from Sam's club and go for case sales or single bags of cryovac. I'm sure Costco does something similar.

You can also leave the cryovac bags in the fridge for months and itll just get more tender (wet age).

The only thing you have to do is figure out how to process ten to eighty pounds of meat. I just chop it up into roasts or steaks, put it into freezer bags and throw it in the freezer. Youtube is a good resource if you have no idea what to do for a particular cut of meat.

An instant pot will turn any tough cut of meat into something delicious and tender to put into a stew, stir fry, or anything else. They do a lot of work for an 80 dollar appliance.

Always put your keys in the same place. Might take a bit of time to become consistent, but once you're 90% there, lost keys become a non issue.

Use money to leverage your habit building. Must be enough to hurt, but nothing that will break the bank

1. Me and a buddy made a $100 bet on who could meditate daily the most days in a row. We called it off @ day 100. Nobody lost any money, and we're both left with a consistent daily habit that hasn't wavered.

2. Noticed that my iphone usage was around 30+hrs a week. Way too high. Wrote a contract with a friend, if I exceeded 10hrs a week on my iphone I owed him $200, each week, for a whole month. I stayed under 10hrs each week, lost no money and learned a lot about how to properly allocate time to my device. I've since remained around 10hrs a week on my phone

If you're as cheap as me, you'll be quick to realize that there's little-to-no risk if you just do the damn thing. It's like a cheat code for habit building. Awesome stuff

I'm a big believer in the power of the Vitamin C megadose for this purpose (as strongly advocated by our own Simeon_Strangelight). At the first sign of cold or infection coming on, I will start taking large, regular doses of Vitamin C. Approximately 2000mg per hour for every waking hour (This seems like a lot, but since Vitamin C is water soluble it is impossible to overdose, your body will simply pee out anything it doesn't use). When you witness that funky-looking neon green mucus (infection) turn into thick white mucus (non-infected) in less than 24 hours you will know there's absolutely something to it.

I've further refined my anti-sickness protocol to include fasting and hot soaks. I've found both very useful as well. For fasting, simply begin a water fast as soon as you feel something coming on. Then wait 24 hours. If the sickness is bacterial in nature you should feel a little better or at least not much worse, in which case continue the fast for another day or two. If the sickness is viral you will probably feel worse, at which point you should end the fast and begin eating heavily, primarily carbohydrates. This link gives a basic explanation for how this works, and includes a link to one of the in-depth experiments demonstrating its effectiveness.

Hot soaks are another game changer for warding off colds/infections. The idea is very simple: at the first sign of illness, soak your entire body in hot water for 15-20 minutes in order to elevate your core body temperature. This creates an inhospitable environment for the infection attacking you. Do this 2-3 times a day. The water should be about as hot as you can reasonably bear. You should be uncomfortable and sweating when you get out. Don't overdo it or you can possibly die. You just want to spike your body temperature enough in short bursts to weaken the virus/bacteria enough that your immune system gets a leg up on it. This works because you are basically just inducing a controlled fever in yourself rather than waiting for your body to do it for you. And since you do it right away, it's more effective at stopping the illness before it can strongly take hold.

Finally, a simple lifehack for avoiding getting sick in the first place: wash your hands before you eat and every time you get home, and get out of the habit of touching your face (most people have no idea how much they do this, make a conscious effort to notice and you will be surprised). Keep germs out of your mouth and you're simply less likely to get sick in the first place.

I want to be able to eat a couple of cloves of garlic every day, with as little effort as possible. If I put raw garlic cloves in vinegar in a jar and put it in the fridge, will the garlic maintain all of its nutrients and last a long time? If not, is there a better way?

@Vladimir Poontang, you can mince your desired amount garlic and add it to a jar of honey, then consume a couple table spoons per day. I'd reccomend also adding minced ginger. This mixture also has the advantage of never going bad as long as it is kept in a sealed container; preferably glass.

Could I fill a jar with whole cloves and then top it up with honey? And does it matter what kind of honey? I don't eat much honey but when I do I get the cheap stuff. Will that do?

I have been doing this too, and it works wonders. One thing I will say is that a hard dosage isn't necessary. It's more about hitting "bowel tolerance". You basically want to take enough that you are constantly on the verge of diarrhea. This means your body is hitting the limit of how much Vitamin C it can process, and it will vary for each person. If you are taking so much that your poop is almost all liquid, that is too much. I've found that taking a tablespoon, waiting a couple hours to see how my body is processing it, and then redosing works well.

Also, get the pure Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) from the supplement store. Don't buy it from major chains or grocery stores because they mix it with buffers to prevent the diarrhea. But that totally kills the effectiveness. Consumers only want to feel good, they don't want to do good.

@Vladimir Poontang That's really upto personal preference, the only difference it will make is the fact that you will have to chew entire cloves and thus bare with the unpleasant taste, verses just swallowing the suspended minced garlic

Came up with a couple more:

1. Before you buy a phone, always check if http://www.gsmarena.com first.
Usually any Xiaomi phone nowadays tends to be a lot cheaper than any iPhone and other phones playing within the same league.

2. If you shop online, use the chrome extension called "Honey" which automatically searches through coupons that gives you a better deal. I've used it myself for a few years and saved a lot of money considering all the times I've bought something online.





3. If you're travelling and want to find a good deal when you book a decent hotel, then use hotwire's website to get a better deal by following this smart method. When 3- and 4-star hotels have unsold rooms, they use Hotwire to fill them, so you get them at prices lower than any other travel site, guaranteed but they won't tell you which exact hotel it is, just in which area of the city it is. But it's possible to figure it out anyway...





You could also just image search on Google and it will usually be possibly to see what exact hotel it is.

4. If you want to read something on Scribd but don't want to pay for an account, just do this method where you upload some crap first:

No, I didn't buy a giftcard, I bought the membership. So if you type in "Spotify", "Spotify premium", "Spotify premium 12 months" it should come up. I made an order and within an hour or so the seller sent me the login details and that was it.

Some sellers don't have a lot of feedback (but if someone would fuck you over for $ 2-3 you can always ask eBay for a feedback if it says "money back guarante"). Or choose a seller with more feedback, but they usually charge around $ 8 or so.
I bought from someone like that back in early February and it has worked ever since. I actually did the same last year and it lasted for a year so then I just copied or followed all the playlists I had from the old account where it expired.

And to add to that, Magnesium is of super importance! I take it in a liquid form, can be applied over the skin or ingested internally, very safe mineral and many are deficient in it. Responsible for energy level, muscle relaxation, sleep, and hundreds of processes in the body.

Stretch every morning. When you sleep your muscles often lock into certain positions, as you are mostly immobile. This makes for tight muscles in the morning. Bring your body back into motion with ~10 minutes of stretching - truly works wonders for the mind and body.
