I don't understand all the hate, especially on RVF. I loved the performance, but then again, I'm an old cat who remembers back to the 'controversy' of Madonna's pointy bra. I love seeing people raise the bar (good, bad, or ugly. I don't care how.) She just went for it.
The entertainment industry is all about shock, sexual liberty, reckless abandon, and extravagance. It hasn't had anything to do with singing ability in decades. Miley did exactly what she said she was going to do, outdo 'the kiss'. And the next day everyone was talking about her. And there is no such thing as bad publicity.
PLUS, I love how she made prissy drake, fresh prince, and every other hater look like puritanical bible thumpers. They were just jealous, IMHO. She made an unapologetic spectacle of herself, got mad publicity, and is now the IT girl. Like I said, I've seen this a dozen times before. The lore of her performance will chance in time to be considered a bold statement about womyms' sexual empowerment.
Yes, she went full retard, but I LOVE it when people go full retard. Think what you will of me.

There was a bar raised here? Where?
If the bar relates to attention-whoring then I guess you have a point, but why would we celebrate that?

Yeah, she won in that sense.

Here performance was bad enough that one could hate quite a bit on it without coming across as a "bible thumper".
It wasn't the scanty clothing that presented an issue, that's been done by bigger names than her many times before. It was:
a). The fact that the clothing looked like crap on her (tried to mimic the Blurred Lines girls, failed).
b). The fact that she can't dance.
c). The fact that she can't twerk but insists on trying despite having no ass and no rhythm.
d). The fact that she looked like try-hard wannabe-edgy trash on stage. She's working so hard to seem "out of control" that she can't seem to keep her tongue in her mouth.
Hell, people don't mind girls offending puritanical sensibilities with skimpy clothing and blatantly sexualized performances if they're done right.
Miley Cyrus is getting hated on because she just looked stupid. As it stands, looking stupid = mad publicity, so I respect the hustle, but let's not pretend the criticism wasn't warranted and everyone making a critique is a jealous "puritan".

+1 for use of phrase "Full Retard". The idea of someone going nuts in complete bad taste is quite hilarious.
As a musical performer myself, I'm quite aware that people are desperate to see someone who's able to completely let go-- they can't do it themselves. It's the closest they ever get to that type of freedom.
It may be someone talented, like Jimi Hendrix, it may be someone less talented like Miley. But that's a separate issue than the need of the trapped masses for convulsive release from convention.
She now has 120+ free publicity releases on RVF. It's completely immaterial to her commercal success if they're haters or not. Although i disagree in some way's, Athlone's is
especially well-written.
Haters are still free labor.
I felt sorry for the aghast viewers like Drake and Will Smith's son. They were not into her performance (for good reason) and at the same time they were on national TV and could not just walk out or start texting their therapists or anything.

Man, that Alizee video was driving me nuts because it looked so familiar until I finally remembered back to my night elf's days of grinding on dwarves' faces in Azeroth for pretend gold.

In a way, yes. Just like people made fools of themselves calling piss-christ 'art', the fems will show their stupidity by championing this blatant attention whoring as if Miley is some innovator. Just like calling madonna an innovator for dressing like a ho and singing about being a virgin, Miley juxtaposed her complete transition to whoredom with teddybears.
Miley's show was the greatest Slutwalk anyone's ever seen. It just hasn't sunk in yet.

You mean centuries. Performer virtuosity has always been of secondary importance. There are many facets to an entertaining musical performance besides shock, sexual liberty, reckless abandon, and extravagance.

If I want to make a comment, why should I care whether she's profiting from it or not?
I'm impressed that she's able to just let herself go on stage like that, full retard and all. If she brought that kind of enthusiasm to a Tijuana donkey show I'd pay pretty good money to go see it.

I am sure this thread has generated quite a few cd and dvd sales...
Just joking of course. This discussion is all for entertainment value. I have serious doubts anyone who could benefit from this thread (some very good points have been made) will read it.
All this has done for me is confirm what I already knew - Athlone has an eye for beautiful women.
Fate whispers to the warrior, "You cannot withstand the storm." And the warrior whispers back, "I am the storm."
Women and children can be careless, but not men - Don Corleone
Her mistake... If only she had first put in more time ingratiating herself with a gay audience, then this kind of stuff would be considered "pushing boundaries" and applauded, instead of just "trashy", at least by media critics.
Funny quote:

Those qualities describe porn more than music, and I don't buy music to jack off with it. There are prettier girls than any female music star on the streets of my town, and they haven't deliberately made themselves as ugly and masculine as Miley now has, skinny or not. It's interesting that women would see her performance as a display of High Social Value because she's famous, but it's Low Value to my eyes.
Why do I buy music? Artistic expression, talent, virtuosity, higher thought, honesty, emotion, beauty, subtlety, nuance, ferocity, life experience and insight.

I'm pretty sure I'd have the same reaction a fat woman or a hipster would if you shot a firehose full of shit directly at my face.

It's simply not "red pill" (code for Alpha, I've gathered that) to put so much stock into Miley Cyrus' on-stage behavior. Yeah, it was pretty dumb, but society needs diversions to keep itself entertained.

Red pill is not analogous to Alpha. Red pill is just a euphemism for seeing reality for what it actually is instead of accepting the delusions society has foisted on you from birth.
Alpha is mostly not worrying what is alpha.
Miley Cyrus is a trashy hoe headed for a mental breakdown.
Damn I'm on a roll here. Anyone else got some words I can define?

Getting into semantics now, but it's pretty obvious that alpha/red-pill are synonymous, even if the definitions are different.
The red pill analogy is taken from The Matrix, and the movie provides a good way to explain the difference between red pill and alpha.
Remember all those other people on the ship? They took the red pill. They see and understand reality for what it is. But they aren't alpha.
Morpheus and Neo took the red pill, and are also alpha.
Red pill describes the way you look at the world, alpha describes your actions and status in the world. There are plenty of guys who are red pill but not alpha, and also plenty of guys who are alpha but not red pill (also known as naturals).
Red pill = internal
Alpha = external
They are not the same.
Also, I find it find it pretty amusing that a poster with zero rep links me to a post by another guy with zerp rep as evidence for the definition of red pill and alpha. What will you link me to next, Lindy West on game? I suppose that is if you're not too busy trying to correct Peyton Manning on his throwing motion, or giving Warren Buffett some advice on stocks.
