She's going to watch this episode and see how close to the edge everyone was compared to her and realize how badly she fucked up.

Of course she used the usual bullshit rationalization almost everyone else does when they fail out: My journey here is complete! The money doesn't matter you guys, it's about the experience! Fuck off.

At least Greg had the nuts to admit he failed, although I'm sad he did.

Of the remaining, I'd say Fowler if his food situation remains ok. Dave is a dead man walking.

Just came across the Feminist on Island video.

I wonder if any one of us Urban Dwellers with no outdoorsy experience would do any better?

The point of modern propaganda isn't only to misinform or push an agenda. It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth.

Dude, you called it. Dave, Stockpiling fish while he's starving. Getting sent home for malnutrition while having over 30 fillets saved up, has to be the "Alone" asshole move of the season.

I get it that he was trying to ration food for the future, but you have to know it's time to eat something when you start looking like the Crypt Keeper.

Just caught up. Callie WTF. Either they purposely edited it to make it look easy for her so they could pull the bait and switch, or my theory from the last season still holds up. If it's TOO easy, you can't win. You have to be struggling or your wandering mind causes your downfall.

How unexpected.

Next season, I want to see someone who at the end has a nice log cabin, a full set of fur clothing and is fatter than when he arrived.

Why didn't Dave hunt hardcore with that bow? Are none of these Bushcraft instructors actually hunters?

I'd like to see someone like Matt Graham on there who is a primitive survival expert and has lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle versus just someone who teaches basic bushcraft skills, grew up in Alaska, off grid, etc.

Also, I hope they mix up the scenery a little more. It'd be cool to go someplace tropical next season like the Amazon or something. Watching 10 episodes of them setting fishing lines and hoping for a bite is pretty boring. Only one guy even tried to make a boat/raft.

RE: Survival TV Show: Alone
I think the problem is the format and the goal. Survive as long as possible. Unless you can rake in a lot of food the winning strategy is to do as little as possible.

There also didn't seem to be a lot of small animals, and what there was (mice) they couldn't eat due to Hantavirus. There was apparently rabbits around, but they sucked at snaring them. No squirrels, tiny songbirds.

Also I think it's in their interest to have people struggling and having a hard time. My wife had a theory that they were giving the girls hidden food stashes to keep them in the game.

Patagonia was an interesting gamble but just didn't pay off. Too much like Vancouver Island visually and didn't bring anything different for survival.

The situation forced people to quit due to bad luck. The only failure due to their own mistakes was Dave starving to death because he'd gone all Rainman repeatedly counting his smoked fish.

They really need to pick somewhere with abundant food sources for the next time, because "I'm cold and hungry" has now been fully explored in as much depth as we will ever need.

Nah, didn't one guy cut himself with his axe early on? Also, it seemed like there was a lot of food there. Going tropical would make it really easy I think.

I personally think all the contestants are very knowledgeable, but they just don't have the practical experience with setting traps. They can set them up, but little problems are constantly leaving them undone. They'll have an almost foolproof trap, but the animal will escape almost on a technicality.

I still think the dude has it unless he goes cuckoo from boredom like every other serious competitor on the show to date.

RE: Survival TV Show: Alone
Alone is back with season 4. I could not find an "Official" trailer to post, maybe someone else will have better luck finding it.

What I do know is they are changing up the format a bit. Contestants will be in teams of two. They start off by separating the teams. One team member will be at the base camp while the other teammate will be dropped off 10 miles away from their partner's base camp. The dropped off member must hike through the wilderness to the base camp using only a compass to guide them.

Once reunited with their partner, they must outlast the other pairs.

Being paired up could make for longer endurance, due to the loneness issue being taken care of. They just have to deal with the elements and the critters.

RE: Survival TV Show: Alone
Just finished up season 3. Assuming that there was no funny stuff behind the scenes, I respect that woman who made it to the runner up position. She didn't give up and she took good care of herself psychologically. Still glad a man won (not because this show proves anything), because the feminists (all modern women) would have decided that an arbitrary TV show competition is statistically valid.

I was expecting Dave to win as I thought he was crazy enough to never give up. He already looked insane on day 1. However, when I saw how much his strength had diminished, it was clear that he'd picked a losing strategy. When you are that low on nutrition, 100 calories a day just doesn't cut it. He should have stopped smoking more fish when he got to 10 filets and used them on days when he didn't catch anything just to keep his intake steady (would have been handy at any point where he went without finding protein for a full week or something, but it didn't make sense on the long term.

I am disappointed that no one killed a boar or even a rabbit. A boar would have been epic.

While I have no idea what I'm actually talking about, the thing to do would have been to dig another pitfall trap with spiked bamboo at the bottom every 1 or 2 days. Sooner or later, a boar would have fallen in.

Anyone who killed a boar and preserved the meat would have been guaranteed a win if they'd wanted it. That meat would have lasted forever and given them energy to get a head-start on future food sources.

How come nobody on these survival shows just brings a damn lighter?

I was watching one and the guy is a primitive bow drill expert who's lit thousands of fires.

They always get ready to start the fire then the guy is like " well I got this bark and leaves and shit bit its just too damp here." Like that's a shocker.

We've had lighters and matches for hundreds of years. Get with the program.

Aloha!

In This particular show, participants are only allowed to pick 10 Items from an approved list.

I don't think a lighter is on there. Blush

The show is back with Season 5. I didn't get beyond roughly episode 3 in Season 4. The team aspect really seemed to lower the quality of the contenders. I quickly lost interest.

But Season 5 is here and Sam, from Season 1, is back. I don't think he'll win, but it's great seeing him in his element again, being honest, yet practical.

I grew tired of this show after season 3. Everyone seemed to have figured out the winning strategy, which was hunker down and do nothing. After the first few episodes, it's hard to get excited about that.

Did this change in the last 2 seasons?

That simply isn't the case.

Those who have won have succeeded because they were able to secure a reliable source of balanced diet, not because they sat on their asses.

The last season was a mistake, glad that they've gone back to the original idea - but in a much more interesting location this time.
