The reason for suicides is the high unemployment rate we have in Australia, for example Engineering hiring managers have a quota of 50/50 for each gender.
This is despite the fact that 90% of people who study engineering are males, It's getting harder and harder as a man on Australia to find a job.

I have male friends in the Australia that can't join the police force or the army due to the bullshit quotes. A couple years ago, the Australian Army recruiters refused to recruit based on quotes hence were all fired.

I return back to Melbourne (well I now live just outside Melbourne) tomorrow after a 17 day trip in Bali and Bangkok.. Fuck I needed that. Was a deeply angry man in the few months/couple of years before. The culture was eating me up inside.

Walking 2km down Sukhumvit in BK I encounter more life and culture than in 6 months in Melbourne.

It wasn't even about women. It was about people LIVING. Doing their job and being grateful for what they have.

I plan on living the spiritual life and focussing on my work.

I have been writing a diary of sorts on my trip. In the spirit of what we've been talking on this thread, I'd like to share my entry from tonight:

It's the 17th night. I've just flown from Bangkok back to Denpasar, and I'm leaving for Melbourne at noon tomorrow. I've come to the end of my trip, and I feel emptiness. Not in a bad way. Emptiness in the Buddhist sense.

I'm having a cigarette on my balcony at 10.30pm- I'd only slept 2 hours the night before, so have just woken from a 5 hour nap. I have a slight headache and, looking out over the pool, a flicker of a thought comes across my mind- how stupid an idea it would be if I were to jump.*

I've seen people living blissfully on 1/100th of the money that I have. I'd heard the story of the old woman who made breakfast for the guests every morning at my Bangkok Comfort Inn- that she slept on the street outside the hotel every night.

My mind has been rotten my entire adult life- seeing the things that I don't have, not appreciating the oceans of what has been given to me.

My heart had been filled with lust for the past 12 years- wanting womankind to give me every bit of the wholeness that I had denied myself.

But, even so, I don't feel shame over this. Shame is what I have lived in my whole life as well- the yin to the lust's yan.

The feelings I've had about my life have completely impacted it. When I had riches, I'd focused on where I was limited.

When I had the love or admiration of a woman, I'd focused on the two billion that, at that moment, didnt feel the same way.

I have been surrounded by gold my entire life- yet saw myself as a pauper. After years- and years of telling myself this, it had started to come true.

That 1% that survived the shotgun almost certainly 1. used birdshot to blow away their face, jaw, and eyeballs, leaving cranium intact 2. jerked at the last moment, diverting most of the blast 3. didn't aim far well enough to hit bulk of the brain/brain stem.

Best to row out into the ocean, O/D and poison self, blast a hole in the bottom of the boat, then shoot self in the head. Just to be sure.

Little holidays can be rejuvenating.

Living in a place like Thailand or Bali would present it's own difficulties- less creature comforts, have to use bottled water just to brush teeth etc. Also not as cheap as I thought it would be.

The winning way I think- if you can't live overseas- is to take every ounce of enlightenment out of your time overseas and change your mental/physical/spiritual patterns when you return home.

That might work, but personally I`m trying to avoid death/aging if a can. There`s enough time in the universe, and quite a few things to see and learn out there.

Killing yourself ultimately is testament of a lack of perspective in some ways. You don`t see the opportunities in life. To quote Charles Darwin; "a man who dares waste even an hour, does not understand the value of life." That adds up 3x for someone who commits suicide.

The problem is that in the west, we're taught to associate with our emotions before all else. Western people define themselves by their emotions and let them rule their decisions in life, to say nothing of their self view. Feel like something is "off" in your relationship? End it, divorce your spouse, cheat, or commit some other perverse behavior. Feel like wallowing in degeneracy for years and years, regardless of the negative impact it will have on your physical and spiritual health? Go for it -- YOLO after all, so why not get plastered three times a week, smoke your brain cells away, and put yourself at risk of STD's weekend after weekend? I could go on and on. Point, modern culture encourages people to be ruled by their emotions and thoughts.

In a saner world we would be ruled by our souls and by the desire to selflessly help others. We'd be ruled by the desire to live healthy lives and better the world. We'd see our emotions, thoughts, impulses, and sensual desires for what they are -- things that can be harnessed to better society, but also things that by themselves say nothing about us and should not be given undue importance.

This is the root of the problem. You have no answer to depression, hedonism, aimlessness, or any other modern mental ills. It's because western society says that external things -- consumer goods, sex, alcohol, money, validation, "fun" -- give you worth and make you whole. When in reality the only lasting peace or satisfaction comes from an internal, spiritual source.
