Agreed. I first tried no fap/no porn about two years ago and came to the same conclusion. Jerking off to porn left me feeling weak, empty, and apathetic-and these effects carried over to the next day or two-while jerking off to memories of bangs past generally only made me sleepy, and I'd feel fine the next day.

I'm apt to believe sites like YourBrainOnPorn when they emphasize how similar watching porn is to doing cocaine:

Both habits stimulate a huge release of dopamine into the brain, and the brain's neurons respond by lowering the number of dopamine receptors (a type of regulatory feedback intended to maintain healthy levels of neurotransmitters in the system). After a few rounds of this, the addict finds it progressively more difficult to achieve the same "high," needing more and more stimulation each time. Eventually, the brain pares off so many dopamine receptors that it's difficult for the individual to even get back to a baseline feeling of normalcy.

Porn is surely as much of a super stimulus as cocaine, so it makes sense that the brain would adjust over time. And while jerking off to mental stimuli likely provides its own dopamine boost, I'd venture that it's a much weaker response, one that doesn't seem to result in the same feelings of lethargy and depression as watching porn.

After much experimentation (and several relapses), I've found my personal sweet spot to be once-a-week masturbation without any external stimuli. If I'm getting laid that week I'll even abstain from that. This is just enough to prevent my horniness from running rampant, allowing me to focus on my work and reducing the risk of a relapse. I feel much healthier (and enjoy sex more) now that I've eliminated pornography, and I've found like masturbation-like many things in life-is best used in moderation.
