Greek and French literary sources testify that the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander was married to a Jewess Sarah, the daughter of a Venetian banker, and that this marriage was arranged by the Jews with the sole purpose to weaken the Christian faith in Bulgaria.

When the Turks first came to the Balkan Peninsula, they signed an agreement with the assistance of the wife of Ivan Alexander - Sarah which gave them the legal right to organize in Thrace fighting squads for further hikes in other Christian countries.

According to this agreement, Bulgaria was obliged to provide them with active military support. Ivan Alexander was hoping that the appetite of the Turks would be satisfied and that Bulgaria will be saved.

This is just one story from the top of my head but as you can see the elite back then was also not acting in the best interests of their people. But eventually it costed them their Kingdom and wealth.

There is nothing new under the sun. First was Egypt:

Next was Babylon and Persia:

And thus the Gates of Babylon were opened to the invading forces.
