The same thing happened in the 1970s, when people thought they were "possessed" by the devil and priests conducted exorcisms. Then in the 1980s, Satan moved to daycare centers.

We also got anorexia and bulimia which no one had, then everyone had when it made all the magazine covers.

Then in the 1990s, we had "recovered memory syndrome" where women suddenly remembered abuse from their childhood and somehow got judges to put their fathers in prison for imagined crimes (look it up).

The media drives this, but in order for it to take hold, people have to buy into it.

What really troubles me is that no one ever seems to be able to bring a sense of context to all of this, least of all newspaper writers. If you say "Wait a minute, let's step back and examine this in terms of history..." they just scream "bigot!"
