Sorry for the situation you are in.
I think your engineering degree should be a help.
As for age, a friend of mine who worked as a graphic artist, laided off 2 years ago, started as 1st year apprentice pipefitter at 55. (3 year apprenticeship).
I heard of another fellow, welder in Fort McMurray in his early 70s.
A lady I used to work with, she is 54, got a job as a security guard at a camp 3 hours north of Edmonton. $22.50 an hour + $60 a day la, 12 hour days, 2 weeks in, 2 weeks out. Watches TV, Internet or reads on shift. The trades guys on site feel sorry she is paid so little!!
Best thing is to make the trip to Calgary. Have you tried the site britishexpats.com, some useful info on there.
Cheapest airline from UK is Air Transat.
