The Brutal Honesty of Lykke Li
Now, most female singer songwriters are basically delusional romantics -- think Adele and her grammy victory. So many of their songs are about "true love" and "heartbreak" -- the fantasy hamster world.

And then, there's Lykke Li.

I have been listening to her record "Wounded Rhymes" and it pretty amazing how brutally honest she is about being a female. She is simply not afraid to say she can be -- and indeed WANTS to be -- a submissive slut with serious daddy issues.

Oh, sure there are the obligatory heartbreak songs -- after all, the hamster does have to keep the wheel turning -- but when she peels it all away, it gets nice and raw. So we get lines like, "Like a shotgun needs an outcome/I'm your prostitute, you gonna get some." from "Get Some." And in "Jerome" she knows she's been gamed: "I hear your shouting, I feel your pounding...you got me for nothing."

And then, in "I Follow Rivers" she relishes being that submissive slut, working through those omnipresent Daddy issues.

Quote:Oh I beg you, can I follow
Oh I ask you why not always
Be the ocean where unravel
Be my only, be the water and I'm wading
You're my river running high, run deep run wild

He a message, I'm the runner
He's the rebel, I'm the daughter waiting for you
You're my river running high, run deep run wild

Oh, and she looks like a slut too. Watch this.

I've been listening to Lykke Li for almost 2 years now. The first song I heard her sing was "Until We Bleed" - I thought she was pretty cool, and the lyrics real deep and real.

I actually just read an interview with Adele that she did for Vanity Fair. She acknowledged that her past failed relationships with men fueled her lyrics. She even owned up to the fact that the boyfriend she had previous to her current one actually treated her well, and was honest about the fact that ultimately it wouldn't work out. She also alluded to those daddy issues (her parents split when she was very young, she didn't have a relationship with him for the past 10 years, thought she might want to, but then he sold a story about her to a newspapers so now he's cut off forever, blah, blah). She prefers big, burly, older men as boyfriends - daddy replacements that make her feel safe.

The original European lyrics of her first single "little bitW was:

"come here, stay with me
strap me by the bed
'cause i would give anything, anything
to have you as my man (2X)"

Thank you for sharing your observations. I have actually just been turned onto Lykke Li's music about a month ago when I heard the Beck remix of Get Some. So, I haven't heard more than the one song, which you did mention in your post.

I'll look into Wounded Rhymes to give it a listen

Probably needs big burly men because she'd crush anyone else.

My intro to Lykke Li was "I'm Good, I'm Gone." I think it was a free video on itunes, so I downloaded it. I hadn't listened to anything else she's done since then, but I need to reaquaint myself with her stuff.

Haha!! Yep. Ever since I first heard 'rolling in the deep', 'someone like you', and all her "I'm a scorned and bitter woman" tracks, my only thought was, "Bitch, he left you b/c your fat!"
