I juice. I have one of those Brevilles that are on Amazon for around $200.

I will try this before I work out.

Off topic, I get better pumps also when I drink a preponderance of water throughout the day. A minimum half-gallon and it's much better.

RE: Health: Juicing
I don't have a juicer buy I go to the organic juice spot everyday. Drinking the juice right away is important. You do lose nutrients from oxygen getting to it. It's like cutting up a bunch of veggies to make a salad and than leaving it out or in the fridge. A great book with a good chapter on juicing is "the Tao of health sex and longevity." They explain a lot of synergistic mixes and how medicinal certain combinations can become.

Don't worry about sugar in fruits and veg. It is natures sugar and what fuels the brain.

Nice post Mike. Juicing spots Are a good place to meet healthy girls too.

RE: Health: Juicing
Things for the advice on juice/protein powder fasting. Makes sense.

Other people seem to have noticed this phenomenon as well but a smart girl I know explained the reasoning behind it to me: after juicing for two weeks alcohol is hitting me more quickly and I actually got sick from drinking for the first time in years. My system is cleansing and does not appreciate new poisons entering my body. Super interesting effect.

Any ideas on how to juice things like Kale, parsley etc. My juicer (hamilton beach) does not seem to get much of anything out of it. Especially the kale.

Kale's just low-yield in general, man. There isn't that much juice in it. But what IS in there is super good for you.

Nope. I pitch it. Soon I'm going to start composting and growing my own greens. I'll add it to the compost bin.

An e-pal of mine feeds the pulp to his chickens. Pretty cool.

You can put a few full spoons in the juice if you like pulp

Mike, I am thinking of juicing onions, garlic, apples and a potato. What can I throw in there to get rid of the pungent onion, garlic aroma?

I don't like wasting the remains after juicing miscellaneous greens so I put them in the dehydrator, add a little salt and pepper to make "green patties".

If you wanna use onions and garlic, don't force them into something. Apples and potatoes are a blank canvass and will absorb all of the onion.

Use carrots, beets, lettuce, bell peppers, tomatoes and make a "real V8 juice."

When you juice beets, do you peel them first?

And with lemons, do you throw in the whole lemon?

i do the entire beet, greens on the top and all. chop it into 1 inch segments.

and with lemons i usually roughy slice the peel off in four sides..not too terribly concerned with getting it all off, just most of it off quickly.

beet juice tastes really good i think

Yup nearly sliced off a finger tryna chop a beet down into sections once.

Idea:
Roast your beets for a bit prior, there is so much natural sugar in them I would imagine they freeze well. Roast them to get them good to chop down then throw a big bag in the freezer for smoothies/juice.

should have clarified. i chop the greens into one inch sections and then the beets into sections just small enough to fit into the juicer.

the reason you chop some things small is to prevent a back up in the juicer of stringy fibers like celery and kale stalks when using a masticating juicer

if you use a centrifugal chopper than cutting it is less important

Beets and carrots are slightly less bitter if you peel them. I at least use a scrubber brush to get off the top layer of dirt off.

I only partially peel the lemon. I just take a knife to the top, bottom, and roughly on the sides.

Guys, if you are worried about knicks, remember this rule of knives: It's a dull knife that cuts.

When you have a dull knife, you use more pressure and have you get your hands into the mix more.

With a sharp knife, you don't need your hands up in there.

Ceramic knives are pretty amazing for slicing stuff up.

Watched "Fat, sick and nearly dead". Pretty good. To summarize the movie, a guy and several other people went on juice fasts and lost weight/their different variables (blood pressure, etc.) returned to the norms. The change of the main guy was very impressive. Some good shitting on the modern American lifestyle, diet.

Awesome thread guys.

I am looking to buy a juicer at the end of the month. I want to keep it in the $100 range.

Is the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth the best way to go?

Mine is OK, a good starter machine. I find that it can get clogged while juicing, so I will pull off the centrifuge, clean it, and go on juicing. A pain.

But other than that, no complaints. For the price its a good machine that gets you into the game for minimal cost.

I know it's $200....but I bought this a few months back. I love it. I don't think spending $100 for a "starter juicer" is a good use of your money. Because you may wind up buying something more expensive within a year once you start using it and realize the shortcomings. You will spend more money in the long run.
