Yeah, I have always understood that correct form has the elbows tucked in against the body, with the hands placed chest width apart (or slightly less). That's why I can only do maybe fifteen serious pushups tops.

No. I do mine with my arms perpendicular to my body.
Elbows tucked works your triceps, elbows out works your chest and triceps as a secondary.

Elbows out isn't "wrong". Elbows tucked isn't the "right" way to do pushups. Just depends what you want to work.

RE: hundredpushups
uhhh. in my opinion any person who trains regularly doing pushups should be able to knock out a hundred in two minutes.

pushups by themselves are generally a test of muscle endurance rather than strength and power because youre only using your own body weight so the more you can do is like a stamina thing.. but you can combine them with some weights and they'll lean you out. but doing a hundred at a time is far from impossible.

and all this talk about form is just rhetoric. hands about shoulder width apart. keep your back straight and go down until your elbows are at 90 degrees or your chest taps the ground or whatever and bring it back up.

cmon yall.

I attempted this program two years ago. I repeated a few cycles but never could pass 60 push ups.

At the same time I divided the training numbers by 4 and went for 25 pullups, which I did do eventually. My back develops a lot faster than my chest for some reason.

RE: hundredpushups
I'm glad to see that many of you guys recognize that the humble push up is a great exercise. While the standard push up with hands under shoulders, elbows tucked produces excellent results, try performing the Hindu push up, aka Tiger push up or Furey push up.

You can see it on You Tube or see it on the Transformetrics website. Sorry, forum won't let me post links. I know lots of guys that can bench 400 lbs., but cannot perform 25 Hindu push ups.

This is a complete exercise that trains every part of your body. The famous wrestler, Great Gama, would perform thousands of Hindu push ups A DAY! He was undefeated in his career of several thousand bouts.

By the way, the Hindu squat is a great complement to the Hindu push up. You can also find it on You Tube. Builds tremendous strength not only in the legs but also in the abdominal core.

As an older dude in his fifties, all my friends that lifted heavy now suffer from "busted-up weightlifter" syndrome. They have too many joint and spinal problems and visit their compassionate chiropractor weekly for pain mediation. Although I was a good athlete, I never was comfortable with weights and discovered that bodyweight exercises were more my "thing". All my meathead buddies gave me grief because I only did bodyweight. I used the bodyweight exercises to add strength/stamina without bulk. As a competitive martial artist (jiu jitsu, Kendo) in my teens and 20's I could not add one extra pound in order to make my weight limit.

Myself and my few friends that used bodyweight exercises are pain-free and very active. Again, check out the 59 yo guy (John Peterson) at the Transformetrics site. That dude is simply unbelievable and he never lifted weights. He only used bodyweight exercises starting with the old Charles Atlas course when he was 10 yo, post childhood polio. By the way, you can get the original Charles Atlas course for free and download it from the Transformetrics website.

Shoutout to G Manifesto who understands boxing training methods (strength/stamina without weight gain). I was introduced to bodyweight by my uncle. He was a legendary boxing manager at the epicenter of boxing, the Olympic auditorium in Los Angeles. The only venue built exclusively for boxing (1932 Olympics). He managed/trained 3 world champions when there was only one sanctioning body.

He taught me that the pushup and its variations were every much as important as the speed and heavy bag. How wise his words were. Thanks Uncle Johnny!

those pushups were straight garbage. I could easily do 100 pushups in 1 minute using his form.

He doesn't break the plane a single time. And he never fully extends his arms in the up position. All he is doing is basically bending his elbows over and over again. Its the same principle of not bringing the bar to your chest while bench pressing.

High reps don't mean a damn thing when your not doing the exercise correctly.

In addition to pushups, pullups is another quality exercise usually not performed correctly. A 59 yo old man that can do 38 genuine, perfect pullups is an absolute monster in my book. That means slow, all the way down, arms extended straight, all the way up, chin over bar, no kipping/kicking, vertical up and down - no swinging. Enough said.

You're not gonna get pick and strong doing push-ups. However, it will maintain your bulging chest if you already bench press. Doing 50-100 in the morning followed by sit-ups is good to start your day.

Yeah, for the fitness tests in the army and navy, they might let you get away with that, but you're only cheating yourself.

I consider a push-up where you go from elbows locked out down to chest-barely-touch-ground position, but not your hips or legs. So at all times only the hands, feet are touching, and a you count reps from lock-out to chest touching the floor. Those are hard motherfuckers and I reckon I can do at most 50 at the moment.

A year from now you'll wish you started today

That's what I do, and my friend told me they aren't real push-ups!

Not as many, but I try do them in a fast springy way. Same with chin-ups. It hasn't helped me to look more built though, but that might be attributed to my diet or DNA.

The german army does legit push-ups.

Start in the up position
In a controlled movement (IE not just collapsing) lower yourself to the floor
When your chest is fully on the floor, take your hands and cross them over the small of your back
Place your hands back on the ground and push up to a fully locked position

Thats one rep. And just like our military, they do it for time on their fitness tests.

This s--- is awesome. Thanks man!! We forget about the simplicity of push ups. It's great to make it to the gym, but as responsibilities and travel increase, you can slack off. Plus I'd rather play sports. With this, there's no excuses. Since you posted, I'm knocking off 25 at a time in my office and will make it up to 100.

Good luck with your program and thanks for sharing.

I've noticed that pushups are working my lats more than anything else. Anyone Know anything about this?

Before you ask, my form is fine. Body straight, all the way down, all the way up till elbows lock.

Gotta agree. Those are half pushups to me. When I do a pushup, I go far enough so that my glans penis makes contact with the floor.

Based on that, you're either doing half reps or have a small one. Lol you set yourself up for that one bro Big Grin

Same with me. They do little to my arms and pectoralis muscles but train my latissimus very well. Apart from that, I like the concept of training at home. Going to the gym is fucking boring.

RE: hundredpushups
If you want to get to a hundred pushups, cool. But for overall development, you're better off with a mix of dips, pull-ups and the different push-up variations. Pull-ups alone give your torso a nice broad, lean athletic look, especially if you're not stick thin. Here's the world record holder in the weighted pull-up, for example:

Personally, I max out at 13 or so, though I've done 35-40 lb pullups for 5 reps. I've never done rows or cleans to get a good workout out of them, so my upper back exercise is limited to pull-ups.

Plus squats, lunges, sprints and jumping exercises for your legs.

My buddy did the hundred pushups in one hundred days program, which I want to do, and somehow gave himself a hernia on Thanksgiving day! Ha! Poor bastard had to have emergency surgery and he was in so much pain he ground grooves in his upper and lower teeth that day. He's afraid to start it again, but when I do I'll give this thread a good bump Smile

I’d rather be far right, than far wrong!

Add a backpack with more weight for your push up if you want to add more bulk.

Although I use weights I do believe some can gain significant mass using body weight exercises provided they use enough enough volume.

This dude is 60 and does about 700 pushups a day.

YES

If you can only do 10 at first, then 100 after a while, I guarantee you that you will not look the same.

As for big volume gains, it depends on a lot of factors.
Such as body type: http://www.muscleandstrength.com/article...morph.html

The thing is, if you can do 100 push ups you should probably start doing them with extra resistance.
