The Rules
The Rules is a 1995 book advising women to play old-fashioned hard-to-get. One web summary:

Be a "creature unlike any other."
Don't talk to a man first (and don't ask him to dance).
Don't meet him halfway or go dutch with him on a date.
Don't call him and rarely return his phone calls.
Always end phone calls first.
Don't accept a Saturday night date after Wednesday.
Always end the date first.
Stop dating him if he doesn't buy you a romantic gift for your birthday or Valentines day.
Don't see him more than once or twice a week.
No more than casual kissing on the first date.
Don't tell him what to do.
Don't expect a man to change or try to change him.
Don't open up too fast.
Don't date a married man.
Be easy to live with.
Don't stare at men or talk too much.
Don't live with a man (or leave your things in his apartment).
Even if you're engaged or married, you still need the rules.
Do the Rules even when your friends or parents think you're nuts!
Be Smart and other rules for dating in high school.
Take Care of yourself and other Rules for dating in college.
Next! And other Rules for dealing with Rejection.
Don't discuss the Rules with your therapist.
Don't break the Rules.
Do the Rules and you'll live happily ever after.
Love only those who love you.

I think some of this is wrong; that women project their own preferences onto men. Specifically, women are attracted to alpha men with options, so they in turn think men will be attracted to unavailable women.

On the other hand, some of these rules help screen out players. For example, "Don't rush into sex" or "Don't date a married man".

Other stuff makes a lot of sense, "Don't tell him what to do" or "Be easy to live with". The authors advise wearing feminine clothes and make-up, and being sexually available in relationships.

They have a local meet-up group for this book. Irrespective of the merits of the book, this would be a good place to unload your unwanted cats. Cat lady

RE: The Rules
Nowadays, this bullshit would only work for the absolutely hottest girls, in the 17-23 age range, who'd have enough time and an abundance of suitors to callously waste them left and right. This is terrible advice.

This advice is mostly terrible to any broad regardless of age or position on the hotness scale.

Yep. Women don't honestly self-evaluate. This shit doesn't work for 5's and 6's. You need to be hot in the eyes of a majority of men for them to play along with these rules. And there's still no guarantee that he isn't banging other shit while you're ignoring his calls.

A dragon?
Don't talk to a man first (and don't ask him to dance).
Implying that women do that in the first place
Don't meet him halfway or go dutch with him on a date.
I never expect a woman to pay. That's why I always do free shit until she proves her worth
Don't call him and rarely return his phone calls.
Projection, you're only going to catch beta orbiters with this one. A man with options will move on fast.
Always end phone calls first.
I'm ok with this strategy. Mystery works for both sexes, and less is more. Plus it makes it more likely that the conversation will be based on making plans, as opposed to how her cat has a hairball.
Don't accept a Saturday night date after Wednesday.
Not sure I get this one. Is it so she has more time to think of an excuse to flake?
Always end the date first.
Another "creating mystery" move. It's stupid really. You can usually tell when a date is winding down and it's time to call it a night.
Stop dating him if he doesn't buy you a romantic gift for your birthday or Valentines day.
From a female perspective, absolutely. This shows that the man thinks of you as more than a talking pussy. Romantic doesn't have to be expensive. Although I'm sure some women out there think that.
Don't see him more than once or twice a week.
That's fine, we don't want to see you more than that anyway
No more than casual kissing on the first date.
More protection against dudes like us. Makes perfect sense. Unfortunately for them, we have the technology to get past that.
Don't tell him what to do.
Good
Don't expect a man to change or try to change him.
This is solid advice. I wish more women were like that.
Don't open up too fast.
Good idea. Don't want your beta man to find out you are a crazy bitch on antidepressants that has taken 30 dicks in the past two years.
Don't date a married man.
Should be obvious, but women love an unavailable man.
Be easy to live with.
Women 50 years ago didn't need a book to tell them that. Of course when they forgot, it wasn't anything 5 across the eyes couldn't fix.
Don't stare at men or talk too much.
I like the not talking too much part, but I don't get the not staring part. Personally I love it when the women are staring at me, as long as they aren't fat or ugly. Projection on the reader maybe?
Don't live with a man (or leave your things in his apartment).
Yeah, we have other women that come here too you know!

RE: The Rules
This could be good advice for beta guys, as a sort of bootcamp, to break them out of their wretched ways.

RE: The Rules
Problem with women and rules is that whatever those rules are, they are too dumb emotional to follow them.

They can play coy and hard to get with friend-zoned guys because they aren't all a-flutter, but they lose their control as soon as they are thrown off-balance. Under the flimsiest of excuses, they'll break their own morals, promises to their friends, advice from their family, etc.

Women can't follow rules unless they are threatened with exile from higher status people. Hence their historic sub-ordination.
