RE: What colognes do you own?
I picked up a bottle of Aventus a couple of weeks back. Absolutely amazing stuff, my new favourite daily. They gave me a couple of samples from the Tom Ford private blends as well, Tuscan Leather and Oud Wood. Very nice, more suitable for evening/cold weather though.

Nice collection there MrXY!

Tom Ford private blends are excellent. I have London. I also wear Black Afgano by Nasomatto and going to buy Velvet Deset Oud. All Oud. All strong.

I picked up a bottle of the discontinued Purple Patchouli off the German ebay for a great price. One of the strangest fragrances I've come across. Noir de noir is probably my favourite out of his range.

It seems to only improve as the weather improves, definitely a spring/summer scent, but way too light and floral to be considered for a winter scent.

I also have a more offbeat perfume called Encre Noire, its a very weird scent! To say the least, but an interesting one. Definitely more of a winter/night scent to be used sparingly, sophisticated and powerful, but by no means warm. Not one to wear into the office unless you want strange reactions - as I found out the hard way!

I would like to invest more in some Oud type scents going forward. The nice ones do seem to be very expensive though.

Aqua Di Parma seem to have a good range also.

L'eau d'Issey is an excellent spring scent-it's one of the few male florals I like.

Encre Noir is one I really like and wear pretty often in winter, especially on cool, foggy evenings. But I agree as a dark, smoky woody vetiver, it's not right for warm weather.

On a side note, there's nothing worse than being around someone that smells too strong. How many sprays and where on the body are people here generally going with, or do you do the whole spray a cloud in the air and walk through it thing?

I still have bottles of:

Dior Homme - not sure what it's known as now as it was known as simply Dior Homme when it was first released - it was the very first Dior Homme fragrance, released under Hedi Slimane in around 2005 if I recall correctly, still have half a bottle left over from then - pretty nice.

Comme Des Garcons 2 - this is unisex and is more of an interesting fragrance than an attractive one, as are most CDG fragrances - have been complimented on it several times over the years though.

There is no one answer to how many sprays and where on the body-it totally depends on the projection level of the scent and where you're going to wear it and why. I spray anywhere from once for the strongest (ex Musc Ravageur or Black Aoud to 6 for the weakest (ex Set Sail St Barts). Typical is two or three sprays. Less for the office or formal events, more for casual or clubbing.

Dior Homme and its flanker Dior Homme Intense are definitely both still around and very popular in the cologne community.

I discovered this cologne by pure happenstance when I went into a fragrance shop inside a mall. The chick at the counter said it was one of her favorites and I tried it out. I've received many compliments from women. Has kind of a sweet smell. This is my go-to.

-Hanae Mori

A few years ago I heard about this cologne on one of David DeAngelo's programs. I found it at a Macy's (or maybe Nordstrom) liked the smell.

I've never met anyone else who wears these colognes.

Thallium is a sleeper cheapie that is very good for the price. Great for young guys.

Never sniffed Hanae Mori but it seems fairly well known among cologne guys but not with the general public.

(03-29-2015 02:13 AM)Abdul al-Hazred Wrote:  I've only been wearing cologne for about two years. I started with Polo Blue on a recommendation from a friend and I still love it.

I also own:

John Varvatos "Artisan" - To me this just smells like pure class in a bottle, it reminds me of some James Bond type driving an old convertible through the leafy autumn countryside or something. My only complaint is that it doesn't seem very strong at all.

Guess Seductive Homme Blue - Weirdly I really liked this when I tested it in the shop, but it was totally different when I used it at home. It's ok, but a bit sweet smelling for my taste.

Calvin Klein Encounter Fresh - Got it free with the Guess cologne. Way too sweet for my liking.

Can anyone recommend something along the lines of Artisan that lasts and projects well? Both that and Polo smell fantastic, but reading the reviews online it seems I'm not the only one that thinks they could be stronger/more long lasting.

Polo Blue is a decent designer aquatic.

Varvatos Artisan is like all the Varvatos colognes- weak projection and terrible longevity. Smells good for a few minutes and that is all. Not worth the money.
If you like Artisan try Terre d'Hermes-similar style of orange opening and woody drydown but vastly better quality and performance. Very classy.

Aventus is the King of Panty Droppers. Just wait, you'll see.

Tuscan Leather and Oud Wood are both great, as is Tobacco Vanille. I have a decant of Neroli Portofino on the way, which will be my Tom Ford for the warm months.

Never sniffed Noir de Noir but I know it's highly thought of. Will try to get my nose on it when I'm in Atlanta later this month.

RE: What colognes do you own?
MrXY you seem to know your fragrances, this is my actual selection, to see if you have any recommendations. 27 year old, masculine, living in LatAm:

Dior Higher Energy (goes well with summer, started using it 7 years ago and is my go to for hot days. Lately it's boring me but it works for daily casual use)
YSL Libre (for spring days, more sporadic/special occasions than Dior)
Chanel Bleu EdP (better than the original, for fall days and nights, really versatile and attractive, people notice it)
YSL La Nuit Frozen Cologne (for spring-summer nights, really like it)
Emporio Armani White (this is discontinued, too fruity but I liked it for summer days)
Armani Night (date romantic nights, very sporadic use. Disconitnued too)

Really dig Aventus but the $$$

I just bought Dolce & Gabana Intenso. It's new. It's kind of in the area of a woodsy perfume smell. It's ok. It's not obnoxious.

Versace Man Eau Fraiche Eau de Toilette Spray. Thought the name sounded funny and it smells great. Doesn't stink up a room when you walk into it.

I have Aventus, Green Irish Tweed and Bois du Portugal, they are all superstars. Aventus gets an insane number of compliments.
This site gives great reviews and can break them down further.
Aventus
Green Irish Tweed
Bois du Portugal

Try and get some samples from ebay before splashing out on a full bottle.

I bought "in red" by Estelle Ewen thinking it would work for me, but I have not got any compliment so far. At the beginning it is kind of fresh, but at the end it left a nice smell.

Has anyone used it too?

Dolce & Gabbana - The One
Dolce & Gabbana - Light Blue

I get compliments on both these almost every time I wear them.

Jean Paul Gaultier - Le Male

This one is decent, pretty heavy scent but decent.

(03-23-2015 08:27 PM)MrXY Wrote:  If I had to choose one cologne to recommend, it would definitely be Bleu by Chanel. It's versatility is unmatched. It can be worn from early Spring to mid-Fall in any situation- daytime casual or office, nighttime date or pickup scenarios. Use two sprays if you want it to be subtle and four if you want it stronger. Ive used up to six sprays in a nightclub environment when I wanted a lot of projection and gotten compliments. And you will get compliments; women absolutely love it. But it's more subtle, sophisticated and fresh than many clubbing scents.

I recently bought a 3.4 oz of Bleu and I have to agree - it's a mesmerizing scent. It's not groundbreaking or anything, but just an excellent masculine frag. I've already received several compliments on it.

Regarding cologne reviews, my personal favorite is Jeremy Fragrance. The guy talks about which ones get him the most compliments and doesn't get too technical about the notes.

RE: What colognes do you own?
I used to have a large collection of cologne back home (25+), but when I moved abroad last year I brought with me the following colognes:

Issey Miyake - L'eau d'issey
Ralph Lauren - Polo Blue
Hugo Boss - Orange
CK - One Summer
CK - Obsession Night

I love the summery colognes since they align well with the climate here. I also like CK Obsession night's woodsy contrast. I miss Paco Rabanne Pour Homme as it had a really traditional scent which I thought was a nice addition to my more citrus-inclined collection, maybe I'll buy it in the coming months.

I picked up a couple of Tom Fords at the airport last week:
Tobacco Vanille - smokey, boozy a little bit sweet. It's great stuff, may well be my new favourite.
Plum Japonais - smells spicy and fruity, had a few people ask what it was. Another gem.

Lately I've been using this program Scent Bird. For $15 a month they send you a 30 day supply of a cologne which you are interested in trying. So far it hasn't disappointed me.
