Wait Neil... You saw Magic Mike? The trailer alone has more oil-soaked dudes baring their asses than any straight man should feel good about watching...

Haha. I have a habit of downloading a bunch of popular movies at once and then watching them without knowing the story. it's a way of honing the screenwriting skills. To go into a movie without any knowledge of it. You have to figure out what the story is about from zero.

In a way this screenwriting knowledge is annoying because you start to look for plot holes, open endings, the characterization/depth of the actors role, the speed and intensity of dialogues etc etc.

A good movie makes you want to forget about all this and immerse you in the movie.

Magic Mike is indeed a movie made for female viewers.

watched the The Iceman, the film about the New Jersey mafia hitman, Richard Kuklinski. Pretty decent film if you are into hitmen/mafia types.

RE: The Movie Thread
Watched this again last night. In case you haven't heard of it, it's called the Dirty Dozen. Synopsis: Badass Army Major (Lee Marvin) is given 12 convicts on death row (including John Cassavetes, Jim Brown, Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas), and has to train them into a special operations team that will be dropped into France to assasinate a bunch of Nazi Generals on D-Day.

It's about as awesome of a war movie as you can get. The following is my favourite scene. Major Risman gives a knife to one of the convicts, a quiet, giant of a guy named Posey, and picks a fight with him.

I've mentioned this before, but everyone needs to check out Kumare (now on Netflix Instant)

It's about a guy that becomes a fake "spiritual guru", gets followers, etc.

The ending was one of the most inspirational things I have ever seen. No spoilers

I made a thread with that trailer. It looks hilarious.

I watched the newer version of Evil Dead and wasnt impressed. The originals are a lot better. A lot of people have no idea about them, only this version, which Is as shame.

RE: The Movie Thread
Saw a movie called "Jesse and Celeste Forever." Romantic comedy, yet good commentary on modern relationships and their foundational dysfunctionality due to female hamsterism.

Synopsis:

Successful woman and unemployed surfer/cartoonist "loser" man are married. They open the movie "separated" but still best friends and living on the same property, one in the garage, other in the house. Guy gets with another great chick, and when wife's expectations of him coming back begging are not met, things get worse and worse for her.

Anyway, you guys will like it because the power woman of the 90's basically fucks herself because she thinks she is too smart for everyone, and the general feminist favorable traits of her personality screw her over. It's great. It's kind of like the white version of the previous threads about black men not wanting black women because, "nobody gives a fuck about your degree."

The entire trilogy is amazing. Have you seen Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness? If you dig Raimi's original Evil Dead, the other two films are must-see.

RE: The Movie Thread
I finally buckled down and watched Schindler's List for the first time last night. Being a bit of a war buff, particularly with WWII, it's surprising that I only got around to it now.

I may be going aginst the grain here, but I thought it was alright. It was a great movie, but I'm not sure I'd put it into the same class as something like The Godfather as the best movie of all time. I may have to watch it again to pick up everything. However, I did leave thinking that there should be statues to Schindler everywhere. It was pretty amazing to see all of the survivors at the end though.

I do think that Saving Private Ryan, while maybe not a better flick, was much more engrossing and emotional for me. But maybe that's just personal preference.

Layer Cake is great. I probably prefer it to the other two you mentioned. I'm also not a big fan of Schindler's List, although I find the relationship between Oscar and Amon Goeth fascinating.

Talking of Germans, saw two German films this week; Das Experiment and The Wave (Die Welle). Both superb, highly recommended.

I like Matthew Vaughn's style. That's probably why Kick Ass was also a great movie. You really notice it when it's gone, like in Kick Ass 2, which wasn't great (Although Jim Carrey was pretty funny).

I will have to check out those German movies. The one great German movie I've seen Der Untergang, known over here as 'Downfall'. A lot of you guys on here have probaly seen it, but for those who haven't, it's about Hitler's last days in his bunker. It's also the movie where the insane Hitler reaction videos on Youtube come from. It's probably one of the best WW2 movies to come out in the last while.

RE: The Movie Thread
^ Saw Downfall in the cinema. Ganz deserved an Oscar in my opinion. Fantastic film, and his performance was extraordinarily good. Apparently he studied conversational tapes to get Hitler's normal speaking voice spot on. According to sources, it was 'creepily accurate'. Creepy in the normal sense of the word, of course!

Watching an Italian film in a minute, called Gomorrah. It's about the Camorra, a mafia-style gang from Napes, Italy. You'd actually be surprised just how many crime organizations Italy actually has. Look it up on Wiki, whilst the Cosa Nostra is the biggest, it is rivaled big-time in Italy.

Anyway the film has great reviews so I thought I'd give it a shot. I eventually want to write a novel about the mafia, or at least crime organizations from Italy. Think I may go over to Naples at some point and do a bit of research into his Camorra thing. Try and glamorize it for American audiences haha.

Quantum of Solace - a 007 movie with Daniel Craig. Hes a bad ass actor but i wasnt really feeling this one. Decent action scenes but just kind of blah.

I Robot - futuristic movie with Will Smith and a bunch of robots. Will Smith is a cheesy actor but i still expected more from a huge Hollywood movie. Wasnt impressed.
