I wonder what that truck smells like? Have you gotten any feedback? I'm thinking piles of taco bell wrappers and a full ashtray with an undertone of spilled beer and coffee

RE: Worst Jobs
Haha, I was going to say something about "Truck Guys". In construction, being called a "Truck Guy" is worse than being called a lazy piece of shit. It's one thing to be the owner of a company, you're paying the costs to be the boss and you're job is to get business to keep your men busy, so even if the owner is a lazy pussy he's not a Truck Guy. But their underlings, the supervisors, foremen, superintendents, or the assistants, as soon as they get that higher position they quit working and become Truck Guys.

You can always spot the Truck Guy on a construction site because his hard hat is spotless and doesn't have any stickers on it, maybe a company logo at the most. His clothes are all clean and his boots are too and he'll avoid even tiny puddles as he infrequently walks the construction site. The Truck Guy will always find an excuse to get in his truck especially if it's hot, cold, rainy, windy, or whatever, he wants to be in the optimum 65 degree temperature. On any construction site you will see him sitting in the truck, usually talking (or pretending to) talk on the phone while everyone else is outside getting dirty and working.

When I dug ditches with a crew of Mexicans my boss would pull up and play around with paperwork for ten minutes before emerging from his truck, grabbing a shovel from the nearest laborer and digging like a Tasmanian Devil for a minute or two until he was huffing and puffing and just breaking a sweat then announce to all, "That's how you fucking dig, let's go!" before stalking back to the truck, chugging a Gatorade and taking off.

Me and the Mexicans would be shaking our heads. We were digging for 12 hours a day, sharing a warm cooler of hose water. You had to pace yourself, and if you dug the way he did you'd pass out in a few minutes. I would ride with him and he would always be mouthing off about lazy Mexicans this and that and all I could think was how these guys would work circles around him if he actually had to run a shovel all day in the hot sun.

He wouldn't have made it half an hour and that's why everyone called him a Truck Guy. When he got sent to another job dudes were cheering.

Surprisingly no one says anything. Even non smokers and it has to smell like an ashtray as I sit and smoke in it all day. Usually 12 hours or more.

And it's always running. The outside temp is never just right for some reason.

Speaking of ashtrays, the fuckers don't put them in trucks anymore so ashes and butts go out the window.

It's usually easy to pick out where I park on the jobsite....

You know I hate the whole cigarette lighter charging standard that just happen to stick. My car came with the lighter socket in the dash but no lighter or ashtrays. There's even a lighter socket in the trunk!!

Well yeah... And that's been a long time it seems. They started disappearing in the 90's.

I didn't use the ashtray all the time though. Butts out the window unless said window is frozen the fuck shut on some frosty ice covered morning.

It really pisses me off when that happens now. I generally have an empty soda can in one of the cupholders to use until the window thaws out.

Slave laborer in Dubai sounds like a pretty shitty gig:

More details here for those interested.

I can't have sex with your personality, and I can't put my penis in your college degree, and I can't shove my fist in your childhood dreams, so why are you sharing all this information with me?

Especially fun in a WI winter.

Generally call them Ironworkers around here.
Haven't you people heard of Doka? What's with all that plywood and doing shit the hard way?

I didn't mind the winter. As long as I keep moving, the cold doesn't get to me. Only time I really ever got cold was one day I didn't have my flannel lined jeans on, temp was in the low 20s, windy as fuck, and I got stuck on the back of a concrete pump for a pour that took over three hours. I have never been that cold, ever. I've been out when the temp was below zero, and still not as cold as I got that morning.

RE: Worst Jobs
What plywood? No plywood anywhere in that pic.

They are doing a footing for a bridge pier in the pic btw.

I should mention, I don't do the construction, I'm what you might call a liason between the railroad and the bridge contractor.

Back when I was a conductor we would be out flat switching in -20F temps, covered head to foot in Carhardt's and layers under that. Overshoes on my insulated boots and warming pockets in my gloves. Didn't get cold as long as a guy kept moving. Biggest problem was keeping ears and nose from freezing.

They're mostly a mix of illegal immigrants and social outcasts. Even now, a couple years into discovering game and approaching, when I go out I still feel like an alien visitor. I spend 50+ hours a week with people who barely speak English and some really maladjusted people, so when I go out into "normal" civilization it takes some acclimating.

Also kitchens are really comfortable to me. I can say and do whatever the fuck I want. They reinforce all of my misanthropic tendencies...this can have some bad repercussions when I meet a cute girl in a bar and have to remind myself any of the hundreds of offensive things that I SHOULDN'T say. Whereas I could be talking shit to a hostess I work with and being completely offensive and she'd still want to fuck me.

I worked in restaurants as a teenager and all of what you said resonated with me. The crews I worked with tended to include social outcasts, criminals, immigrants, and generally anybody that would never be able to hold down a "proper" job.

The last six years now I've been working in tailoring and dry-cleaning shops, it's not much different. Outcasts, criminals, and immigrants. I mostly fit right in, nearly everyone I work with knows nothing but pulling clothes out of machines filled with toxic fumes, then working over a hot steam press in 100+ temperatures almost year-round. There was one place I worked at that got up to around 125 every afternoon from June through August.

Also, nearly everyone that has worked in dry cleaning or a kitchen has a few nasty scars from getting burned, yours truly included.

RE: Worst Jobs
By far roofing was my worst job. We only got one break (lunch) and as many smoke breaks as you wanted. So, needless to say that is when I started smoking. Plus I live on the west coast and it was either sweltering hot or pouring rain.
Now I've been sub contracting drywall for the last year and a half. it's really labour intensive but I get paid per the square foot and since I've always been a hard worker it pays good.
Can't wait to finish night school and go to university so I can never step foot on a construction site again!
