I've bee reading Jayman's blog constantly for the two past weeks because it's so addictive. He mostly writes about behavioral genetics.

Heritability of obesity is just as high as the heritability for height and IQ (meaning, twin studies show the correlation in BMI between twins raised in different environments to be around .8...pretty damn high). An individual's relative obesity level today is the same today as it would have been 50 years ago. Of course, overall absolute obesity levels are much higher today than they were 50 years ago. But no one really knows why. Study after study shows that carbs, sugar, and lack of exercise, among other things, can't explain the societal wide change in obesity. Longitudinal studies show that when people change up their diets (under supervision from doctors), the results are usually puny and only temporary. Genes are the primary determinant of your weight. The fact that you're skinny and exercise a lot and your family members don't only reflect differences in your genes.

Moreover, lowering your weight doesn't seem to have much impact on health or life span in the long run. Even those things are genetically determined, of course. Pleiotropy, when one gene affects multiple traits, likely causes people to be both fat and unhealthy, rather than the fatness directly causing the unhealthiness.

But I don't explain it as concisely as Jayman. Read his blog to find the links to those obesity studies.

I think the world will be much, much better in every imaginable way, in ways we can't even imagine.

I also think most criticism of the US either comes from US provincialism itself -- don't know how good life is in the US -- or resentful foreigners -- those who struggle to realize their own customs & cultures simply won't cut it in 21st century.

I hate smartphones and the whole Swiss Army Knife thinking that produced them.
I have a camera, I have an MP3, I have a phone, I have a computer. If I combine all of those into one sucky package,
then I have one device which will do all the same things but do them less well, and give me, the user, so many sources of distraction I will complete fewer things as well as doing them to a lower standard-be that listening to an audio course, taking decent photos, or cold-calling people to achieve something.
And while the Swiss Army Knife is dead useful if caught in the Brazilian jungle, it's crap for everyday tasks-even the corkscrew is poor and tends to pull out a lump of cork while leaving enough or the cork in the neck so that you cannot remove it without pushing it into the wine.

I've written more than a million words, more than a dozen novels. Almost 100% of any bad reviews I receive come from women. I long for a way to sell ONLY to men as these reviews tend to be devoid of logic, intellectual thought or anything related to story. Also,
