Speaking as an Ohio native and Cleveland fan...
First, I am happy with the trade. I think its primary purpose is to push for the playoffs and get this young team some experience. I don't think Kyrie, Tristan, and Dion would do well handling another year out of the playoff loop and looking towards the draft. Deng immediately makes the team better and all you're doing is getting rid of Bynum who obviously has no desire to contribute and the first round pick. I'm not too upset about giving up the two second rounders because it is rare to see a second round pick be anything more than dishing out high fives during time outs or being an extra body at practice. (spare me all the instances where someone drafted in second round turned out to be a star. I know the names too)
Second, on your comment about the cavs being interesting in the playoffs ...I am a die hard fan but i'm also not biased or naive. IF they make the playoffs then they will likely fall into the 7 or 8 seed meaning they will see MIA or IND in the first round and barring a major setback or injury to either team there is no way they make it out of the first round. If they could sneak into the 6 seed and play 3v6 then they could get out of the first round but then still face one of the powerhouses. This is a young team but not young in the same sense as Golden State in the West.
Lastly, I think it is a good move for the Bulls. With Rose out they would still compete and make the playoffs but they're not going to get past both IND and MIA. They had a perfect roster structured around Rose with all the perfect role players and pieces but Rose is what makes Boozer/Noah/Deng/Gibson so effective. So they take on Bynum's contract, cut him, and free up some cap space and make some moves this summer or in the draft.
Overall happy about the trade and whether anyone will admit it or not, Ohio is collectively holding its breath in hopes that Lebron will come back and save one of our awful sports organizations and bring Ohio a championship. That would be an entire other thread in itself.

Speaking as a Chicago native and Bulls fan...

I'm okay with this trade as it's better to get something (under the luxury tax and some mediocre picks) than let him walk in the offseason and go empty-handed. However, I will be furious if the Bulls make the playoffs. This is one of the best drafts in the past ten years and the Bulls have a chance to get a top 10 pick, maybe even top 5 or top 3 in Stern rigs it in our favor again. The worst thing that could happen to this team right now is to make the playoffs as a 7-8 seed. TANK TANK TANK

And either trade Boozer or amnesty him this summer for more cap room. Then sign Mirotic for 3-4 years, and sign Melo!!!!

2014 Bulls:

Rose
Butler
Anthony
Gibson
Noah

with Mirotic, Marcus Smart, and some GOOD (not decent) role players who can score. That's a championship caliber roster.

This is an alright move by the Bulls front office, but the success of it will depend on how the rest of this season/offseason goes.

btw: first post on RooshV! Banana figures it's about bball instead of game...

RE: The NBA Thread
I like the move by the Bulls.

They admit that the window on this team has closed, which is true.

The above poster is right that pursuing Anthony is probably the best thing for this team. They need the offensive firepower and with Thib's defensive scheme, they can work with Anthony's defensive deficiencies/laziness.

As far as Bynum goes, his career seems to be in some sort of limbo. I haven't been following the Cav's that closely this year, but this is a clear admission Bynum still is suffering from immaturity issues that I think Phil Jackson must have papered over as a coach. Bynum the needs the right coach to handle his ego issues, plus veterans to keep his ass in check. The Spurs seem like an ideal situation (coach + vets), but I highly doubt the Spurs would make a move like that. The Heat also strike me as a team that would be able to deal with Bynum, but that would make the Heat insanely good. Still, as with the Spurs, the Heat like the team's current chemistry. Simply adding better players only works in video games.

I think the Bulls, with this move, are in a good place. Getting Anthony is key. With Anthony, they have enough around him and Rose to make a push. Depending on LeBron's decision this summer, Indiana might be the biggest threat to the Bulls. Still, going forward, it might be the Celtics, who have have been alright with a bare cupboard. Steven's won't win Coach of the Year (that's Jeff Hornacek), but he has proven he is a very solid NBA head coach. With the Net's 1st round picks, the Celtics are in a good place. And all of this is without their best player, Rondo.

That being said, I like this move by the Bulls. Cav's got better but the Bulls need picks to flesh our their roster and its no guarantee that this move benefits the Cav's for what they gave up.

RE: The NBA Thread
Do we have any Air Jordan fans in this thread? I've been selling most of mine as of late but I had to cop the Air Jordan 1 "Bred" over the holidays. A fun fact about these was that they were banned from the league by David Stern, since he said that they did not feature enough white on the shoe. In addition, MJ was fined 5000 dollars every time he played in them. This worked to the advantage of Nike who promoted the shoes as being an unfair advantage and propelled the Jordan brand to what we know it as today.

I know lots of guys like the really old stuff, but it's not my style. I like the later ones, especially the ones he wore for the last 3 titles. I have no interest in the ones that came out after his 2nd retirement, or low topped versions. A neat trivia fact: Tinker Hatfield drew inspiration from Jordan's F355 in designing the XIV's.

RE: The NBA Thread
Durant's been a on a tear, definite front-runner for MVP. He hasn't been able to garner any good nicknames, what's the verdict on Slim Reaper?

Quote:Chris Ryan: At some point during Kevin Durant’s Heat bank-robbery scene of a game against Portland, a nickname was born. Apparently ginned up by a Reddit user a few months ago, but popularized this week, Kevin Durant finally got a moniker as good as his game. He had tried on Durantula before, but it never quite took. But Slim Reaper … Slim Reaper is good.

Mailman delivered, Air Jordan flew, Isiah just seemed like a Zeke, Wilt looked like he was on stilts, Earvin was Magic, LeBron is LeBron, and Black Mamba is both lethal and corny, just like Kobe. Beyond acting as shorthand, these nicknames perfectly describe the player. Durantula never did that. But Slim Reaper? It perfectly describes his youthful frame and his death-dealing game.

What's Carmelo doing tonight now that he just scored 62 points in MSG? I'm guessing it involves at least 5 women.

^ That shit was amazing. I grew up a diehard Knicks fan (Ewing, Starks, Oakley squad), so I was happy to see Melo make Knick history. Hell of a performance.

@iWin - I sold my Air Jordan XI's to my boy a couple years ago. Had them since high school but only wore them a few times. Made a tidy profit from it.

There's a new documentary with some revisionist history about Vince Carter -a flattering piece seemingly designed to revamp his legacy among Canadians.

As far I'm concerned, VC's legacy will remain enshrined ever since he delivered the most gangster, emasculating athletic move in the history of sport.

The Heat
I don't like the Heat and it's not obvious to me why. I lived in Miami for 2 years and I love the place and the people are cool enough. Lebron is a decent enough guy and doesn't make an ass of himself on or off the court... I guess it's because I think it's a fake dynasty and it's going to fizzle out quick as in this year.

Pacers should destroy Miami this year in the playoffs. Miami's roster looks awful thin. Can they rely on people like Battier and Ray Allen to come through for them again over 7 games against a street gang-like team of defenders like the Pacers? Look at the Pacers bench in comparison with guys like Scola, Granger and CJ Watson.

OK lets say injury disaster hits the Pacers and the Heat manage to make the Finals. I believe that even teams like the Clippers and the Warriors are fully capable of not just beating but sweeping Miami and of course the Thunder with a healthy Westbrook. The Heat would need Portland or the Spurs to get through to have a chance. It's unlikely to happen.

Interesting game Jan. 2 when the Warriors beat them straight up with a full lineup for both teams. The Heat had no answer for Curry and they admitted it.

Last year's title was flukey, the core of the Spurs was well over the hill and they took the Heat to the absolute limit. Even the previous year's title was tainted by absurd refereeing, Lebron mugging Durant in a key moment of a key game changed the whole course of it. The Thunder would've surely taken revenge if Westbrook wasn't injured - another miraculous fluke that gave the title to the Heat. In short they're not going to win this year and I don't see them winning in the years ahead without a major overhaul to compete with Indy whose core is young and the teams from the West that are just simply better. Miami the fake dynasty that never was.

Agree and disagree. I will take you up on the hear going to the finals again.

Hard to bet in a team who has not made it to the finals before. IMHO the heat are just "cruising" they are not talking the regular season very seriously you can tell by their defense and the fact that wade is basically playing 1/2 of the games.

All that said Lance Stephenson is probably the most entertaining quasi point shooting guard this year based on his style of play.

@Justinian: Fully disagree.

If LeBron resigns with Miami, they will be a dynasty. Put him on any team and they are going to be a contender for at least the next 3-4 seasons and maybe beyond depending on how he ages. Pat Riley is one of the best GMs in the league and you can bet anything he will make the right moves to put the right teams around LeBron unlike Cleveland.

Re Pacers: Actually Miami is the slight favorite to me. With the addition of Beasley and Oden, Miami is deeper. If Oden works out, Indiana's biggest advantage over Miami is moot.

Re GSW and Clips sweeping Miami: Laugh

Re Miami being lucky: You can always point out one or two things in every championship run that could have gone either way.

PS. Both the MJ Bulls and Shaq-Kobe Lakers experienced stagnation or decline in the RS going for the 3 peat. Miami was supposed to experience that last year, this is another run on top of that. They are going for 4 straight Finals. Something last accomplished in the 80s. This Heat team is coasting and is conserving energy for the playoffs.

This heat game was pretty telling. They looked engaged defensively, all the highlights are basically tips in the passing lane, ripped steals, blocks and dunks.

That's heat show basketball.

They just don't seem to care about the regular season, a lot of their losses are to staggering teams, people with sub 500 records.

Anyway if oden becomes productive I think the heat are tough to beat straight up and still have the best talent in the league. I do want to see him putting in 20 solid minutes a game though, then I'll be heading back to Vegas to place my bet.

Good analytics Slayer, we'll wait and see. Remember the very weak East when we look at 3 straight finals. They basically just had to get by 1 competent team each year to get to the finals where they arrive relatively fresh compared to what the West finalist has gone through. Yeah, it's still fake to me but it wont be if they take the Pacers and the final this year.

Up your fuckin b-ball IQ if you think this is real, it isn't, it's absurd. Pacers will destroy this team this year despite Beazley and Oden...
