RE: The NBA Thread
I just had to jump in on this thread. Im a huge basketball fan and a Rockets fan since we won the championship in 94. Getting Dwight is bitter sweet for me. Hopefully we get the old DPY Dwight and not the whiny coach killer of the last two years. Still pairing him with Harden is an exciting proposition. I usually go to 5 or so Rockets games a year but this year Ill try to make it to more.

Do you guys ever read grantland? I think Zach Lowe is the best basketball writer since Hollinger took the GM job for the Grizz.

Lol you are late to the party. If you scan the thread you will notice Zach Lowe has already been established as the "cult hero" of this thread. I liked Hollinger too but I wouldn't say he was the best writer before he took the job.

Houston should be able to make a lot of noise. Two of the best rebounders and defensive big men in the game. If Harden and Lin can be more efficient, that team could do big things.

As a JLin fan, i think they should trade him. He and harden are basically the same player requiring the same amount of usage to play well, except harden is obviously player. J-Lin just finished what amounts to his rookie season - let him flourish in a high-usage setting on a shitty team. Once he develops the confidence and the respect, sign him to a contender.

The Timberwolves are always looking for more guards.

Fuck rubio. They hype him so much cuz his passes are pretty. This little euro bitch is one of the most inefficient players in the league.

Rubio definitely needs to work on his jumper. He's a worse shooter than ROndo and that's saying something. Hopefully he can develop a J like Kidd did in his career. Imagine a Rubio with a jumper, passing, and his defense which isn't bad. He can be a good PG in this league.

Miami Heat have amnestied Mike Miller. The new CBA is starting to impact teams around the league now. Brian Windhorst is saying that Pat Riley really wanted to keep the team together but the Arisons did not want to pay over $30 million in luxury taxes.

RE: The NBA Thread
Yea Houston looks set to be really good, but does anyone else get the feeling that Dwight Howard is really over due to surgery/injuries?

Sure he led the league in rebounding, which is great, but the Lakers barely got into the playoffs.

People keep acting like old Dwight who got Orlando to the Finals is about to show up. But he hasn't shown up in the last two seasons. People are gonna keep hacking him, which takes its toll, as you saw last season with him constantly being injured and playing through pain. His free throws are actually getting worse as his career goes on. Think about how many games come down to a few free throws. Probably he won't be playing at the end of most tight games because of this. What kind of player is it who is taken out of the game during clutch situations? Doesn't sound like a championship caliber player to me...

I dunno, maybe he'll be back like it's '10, but I'll have to see it to believe it.

Until then, it's looking Thunder-Heat come June.

I think the Clippers are going to be one of the best teams in the West.

Doc Rivers is a phenomenal coach and I think he can make this roster work. I had hoped that the Clips would have pursued Iguodala, as that would have made their defense one of the best in the league, but I don't he would fit fiscally.

Still, I think the Nets have a better roster than the Heat in the East. Trouble is, they have a completely unproven coach in Kidd. Hindsight is 20/20, but the Nets should have waited on picking a coach before making the blockbuster trade. Lord have mercy, you think Phil Jackson would have turned this roster down? I have a sinking feeling that the Heat will move past them just because of coaching - how can we know if Kidd can transition all these players into a new system?

The Clippers' main problem remains their big men. Relying on Jordan in crunch time is a recipe for disaster. People get on Howard for shooting 50% of his FTs, this guy shoots fucking 38%. Defensively him and Griffin don't know how to use their athleticism.

I think the three real contenders in the West this season are SAS, OKC and LAC. Everybody else will be a fringe contender.

Regarding the Nets, their roster is better than Miami on paper but remember this isn't a video game. When Miami came together in 2010-11 they made it all the way to the Finals just because of the sheer talent of LeBron and Wade. They had an absolutely garbage bench that year but the Nets actually have a sick bench with Terry, Blatche, and Kirilenko. That being said I think it will be tough for them to blend. Their starting 5 is very talented and deep but how do you make it all work?

I said this a few posts ago their biggest mistake is having a rookie coach with a roster which is in win-now mode with a window of 1-2 years maximum. Kidd will have the help of Frank for the Xs and Os but learning player management will take time.

I don't think Miami will make it out of the East next year. If they do that will truly be an achievement. People don't realize but playing 100 games 3 years in a row is very taxing physically and mentally. Steve Kerr even said that if the Jordan Bulls were kept intact he still don't think they would have 4peated. He also said that leaving basketball for 2 years actually helped Jordan for the second 3peat. This is why I laugh when people try to discount Houston's two championships or say Jordan would have won all 8 had he stayed in the NBA.

I think if Miami has to make it out of the East next year they have to get Oden, hope he is healthy and cap LeBron and Wade at 65 games. The Big 3 has to be kept fresh and they should only aim for 55 wins. Even then, I think Indiana comes out of the East next year.

Indiana will be much better with Granger and now they have floor spacing with Copeland. The wise move would be to flip Granger for a few bench pieces. I think having Granger and George together could derail the team. They should go all in on building around George.

The next season will be very exciting and I think it's been a while since both the West and East were wide open.

I agree.

The NFL & the NBA will be fucking awesome this upcoming year.

I am predicating awesome seasons for both leagues.

Can't wait.

RE: The NBA Thread
The Clippers and the Rockets both have the problem of stars who can't shoot free throws.

How many playoff games come down to freethrows? Lots

In a tight game, are the Rockets going to pull Howard?

I actually haven't watched the Clippers too much. In tight games, do they pull Griffin? Do teams hack-a-Griffin like they do Howard?

OKC, Spurs, Heat, those are all teams who can knock down freethrows. Just one aspect, but a really important one for sure.

Think about the Mavs when they beat the Heat. Remember all the freethrows Dirk was knocking down?

RE: The NBA Thread
Greg Oden.

Has come back to haunt Kevin Durant.

KD wants a shot at the Heat.

The Heat are still better than the Thunder but I would say the Thunder do have a chance of beating the Heat. Their finals series was actually very close almost every game being decided in the last minute by only a couple of shots. And KD and Westbrook were like 22 and 21 then.

Anyway, now Oden is back. Selected over KD in the draft.

The Heat don't even need him to win another championship of course, they have more than enough as is. He is just icing on the cake. And that's basically perfect so he can have all the time in the world to rest, recover, and he'll never be pushed to do anything at all.

But I mean, shit, imagine he plays 10 productive minutes a game for them. That'd be insane, as their biggest weakness was their lack of big men last season. You saw how well Bird Man did for them. You saw how much Hibbert nearly wrecked them inside. Now, icing on the cake, they have a potentially amazing center just in case.

I dunno, him, ray allen, they just seem so stacked. It would probably take several injuries for another team to off them.

Excited to see the Bulls for sure. Always remember the Bulls Heat series in '11.

It's a shame he's lost so much time I really hope his extended recovery period allows him to get back to his craziness.

Rose, Westbrook, Rondo, will be interesting seeing how all these great PGs recover. But I'll take Westbrook over Rose from here on out.

Back in '11 Rose was better. Now? Well who knows for sure. But Westbrook has a whole year on Rose.

I enjoyed this interview..

The only thing that pissed me off was when they talked about Davis Stern not letting Chris Paul go to the Lakers. That was total bullshit.

Lebron could go to Miami but CP3 couldn't go to LA.

Sometimes, the NBA is a little rigged. This is one of those times. I suspect that a few owners called David Stern and convinced him to veto the deal.

Total Bullshit.

Cool interview..

This is one of the most dedicated athletes of all time.

If we all worked on our games the way Kobe works on his, we would be swimming in pussy!

Beasley and Odom both free agents now.

Who's gonna get them?

Maybe the Heat. With Oden they're already making room for some high-upside, high-risk players. Why not try it out with these two guys who both have some serious upside? Cut this guy Jarvis Varnado, give Odom and/or Beasley a minimum contract, then have the most stacked bench ever.

No way Beasley comes to Miami. He has quite a colorful history with Riley. In addition to his off-court issues, there have been rumblings that he is not a good locker room guy either. Miami much like the Spurs don't usually take guys who are not good for the locker room.

With Odom, it is a little more tricky. He is very talented and although he has been washed up for quite a while now, he may flourish in a limited role. The problem isn't only his off-court issues which are much worse and more real than Beasley (crack vs. weed and depression), his willingness to play for anyone except for LAL is a big issue.

Personally, I hope Miami passes on both of these guys. Miami's only problem is big men and I rather them keep an open roster spot for a serviceable big man who can bang down low with Hibbert, Lopez, and Noah etc.

Looks like I was wrong:

Heat bring back Michael Beasley

I will admit, I didn't think there was even a small chance that Beasley would be brought back. I am not going to argue against Pat Riley, maybe he sees something I don't.

If Beasley and Oden can give Miami something this will be a stacked team. I didn't have them making the Finals again after this year because of fatigue but if Oden and Beasley can contribute, they just may 3peat. I am getting excited for NBA again. Less than 2 months to go before the season starts now.
