What's your favorite wine for under $10?
I'm not a baller that can be dropping $50 on a bottle of wine. I tend to look for value, something decent though not epic for a really good price. And something that's readily available, where I can walk down the street to get it, not have to special order it or drive half-way across town to the one wine store that sells it.

My go-to wine just for something simple to have with dinner or serve guests is Yellow Tail merlot(Australia). I can get it at the supermarket across the street for $7 a bottle, it taste good(to me anyway) and seems a good value. What else do you guys recommend in the under $10 range?

Do you live near a Trader Joe's? You can always go with 2 buck Chuck... (although now it costs $3.00)

Charles Shaw Wines... Delicious and even taste pricey. If you wanted you could buy one bottle of "good" wine and refill it with Charles Shaw.

I liked to get those horrible jugs of sangria for 10 bucks. Throw out some garbage Italian at the girls and all of a sudden you're the guy who drops mad paper on alcohol.

I think you should try the Blue Yellow tail to. However, check out Argentinian/Chilenian Malbec wines. I am pretty sure you will like them to. Some of them are within your budget and they have the taste of dark berries.

Reisling goes for $10-20. It has a sweet fruity flavor.
I always keep a few bottles handy.

I'm able to find this consistently under $10. It's lethal for the bitches.

This is another good one. It tastes sweet enough for even the most inexperienced drinker and has 20% abv.

I'm no sommelier but those Charles Shaw wines are terrible. There is stuff in the $5-10 range that is much better.

The Don Simon wines at Whole Foods are only $3.99 and remarkably drinkable. I buy these in bulk when I have a party.

that yellowtail is hurting my eyes.

Gimme some specifics: red, white, sparkling, full bodied, light, something with food, something with a cigar. You can find bottles under 10 in each of those categories.

My first pick is 2011 Borsao "Tinto Selección" Garnacha Campo de Borja. If you're unfamiliar with Spanish wines, give this one a go. It retails for about 8 bucks. Grenache is a cheap grape produced all over the world but the Spanish have a talent for making cheap but good wine with it.

Why? Because of the packaging or because it's bad wine?

Mainly red I drink, non-sparkling, full-bodied or mildly dry. Doesn't need to be sweet, but some hints of fruity flavors are cool. Something that can be drank with dinner or just served to a chic by itself to get her loosened up.

New Age? Really? I do not know in other countries, but here in Argentina the thing is a very bad wine, just one step above tetrapak wine. Lizars here like to drink it because is cheap in the discos. The thing gave you a hell of a hangover he next morning.

RE: What's your favorite wine for under $10?
Just updated my post. Check out that Borsao.

Not a fan of Yellowtail or anything else at Trader Joes, but that's just me being a snobby asshole. I'm more than happy to turn people onto the good shit, which doesn't necessarily have to be expensive. One of my favorite white wines is a Semillon from Bordeaux that I get from a wholesaler for 8 bucks.

Look for wines from Argentinian producers Fournier or Elsa Bianchi. Great wines and usually 10 bucks or less.

You can find wines from Delas, french producer, for 10 bucks or less. It's Cotes du Rhone, which is mostly Grenache too. Again, cheap grape that is used the world over to make tasty wines. Whether it's called Grenache or Garnacha, same shit.

I'd say don't rely on anyone's specific recommendations, and instead start being a regular at good wine stores. In L.A. you've got K&L, Vendome (several locations, some are better than others), Wine House, and a few others that I wouldn't recommend.

If there's one wine store you go to, make it K&L. Probably my favorite wine store in the city. Wine House is a very close second.

Just go in there and start asking for wines for under $10, they'll have some great recs for you.

Silverlake Wine Store is also surprisingly very very good. I'd go more often if it was closer.

Bandit boxed wines.

Surprisingly good shit, considering it's like $8.99 for a liter and comes in cardboard. Several steps up from Yellow Tail and way, way ahead of Carla Rossi, Chuck Shaw, etc.

Reisling is all you need for most girls. It's simply not in their power to resist a dessert wine.

If you need anything else, it'll be vodka or rum for the sluttier chicks.

The world market up the street from me they have chocolate mint wine. The people that worked there in the wine section were raving about it. Never had such a thing but I bet any chic would be dying to try it.

I also had a honey wine a few months ago at an Ethiopian restaurant near the Miracle Mile district. This is supposedly a specialty of Ethiopia and it was like a white wine with a honey flavor. It was awesome. Even though I don't have a bottle(going to Miracle Mile to get some is a pain in the ass from the valley and wine stores don't carry it), when I tell girls about it their eyes light up.

RE: What's your favorite wine for under $10?
Riesling isn't always a dessert wine, depends where it's from. Just did a writeup on the wine thread in Lifestyles about Alsatian Riesling which are typically dry.

German Riesling producers typically label their wines according to sugar content. Here's the data:

Kabinett – This is the Riesling classification that is made from the grapes that are the least ripe, producing the lightest style of Riesling wine. They tend to have lower alcohol levels (in the 8-10% range) and are made in a drier style. As a Riesling wine, this is a fantastic option for pairing with a wide range of foods. Consider pairing a dry Kabinett with sushi, shellfish, goat cheese or Thai food.

Spätlese - Literally translated as “late picking” refers to the Riesling grapes that are picked late during the harvest season. This Riesling typically has a medium-body and ups the flavor intensity, due to its extra days of sunshine. This Riesling classification can be made in either a dry or sweet style. Consider pairing the drier form with creamy sauces, rich poultry or pork based dishes or crab; keep the sweeter version of Riesling for serving with Asian or Mexican fare – something with a bit of spice.

Auslese - Translated as “out picked” designating ripe grapes picked out from a specific cluster of berries. This Riesling can also be crafted into either a dry or a sweet version. This is the first Riesling range that may exhibit true dessert wine status. However, many Auslese wines are made in the dry style and make for an elegant pairing partner for heartier fare.

Beerenauslese (BA for short) – This Riesling is made into the luxurious dessert wines that are sought out for their compatibility with a myriad of dessert options but specifically peach-based desserts, caramel delights and even foie gras.

Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA for short) – Translated as “dry berry select picking” designates a late harvest, Botrytis picking, where the berries have started to shrivel on the vine, concentrating the sugars). These Trockenbeerenauslese wines are the ultra concentrated, nectar like dessert wines that can claim quite a price. Give them a go with blue cheese, apple pie, fruit-filled desserts and sweet treats in general.

Eiswein – These are the famous dessert wines that are harvested from highly concentrated grapes that have actually frozen on the vine and are then pressed to produce a low-yield, high-flavor rich dessert wine.

Rieslings vary in price from 8 bucks to 300. All depends on what you're looking for.

As far as honey flavored wines, you'd be surprised how many wines taste like honey without actual honey in it. I'd suggest a Hungarian Tokaji. These can get expensive but they're incredible.
