Preserve your eyesight, fall asleep easier... get F.lux!
http://stereopsis.com/flux/

Quote:Ever notice how people texting at night have that eerie blue glow?

Or wake up ready to write down the Next Great Idea, and get blinded by your computer screen?

During the day, computer screens look good—they're designed to look like the sun. But, at 9PM, 10PM, or 3AM, you probably shouldn't be looking at the sun.

f.lux
f.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.

It's even possible that you're staying up too late because of your computer. You could use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you could just use it just because it makes your computer look better.

f.lux makes your computer screen look like the room you're in, all the time. When the sun sets, it makes your computer look like your indoor lights. In the morning, it makes things look like sunlight again.

Tell f.lux what kind of lighting you have, and where you live. Then forget about it. f.lux will do the rest, automatically.

I've been using f.lux for almost two years and I can't imagine what it's like to go without it.

It turns your monitor into a halogen light source, instead of the bright blue florescent light that makes you want to scratch your eyes out.

I got the idea for this thread when reading the latest RoK article:

Quote:7. Computer screens are the enemy of sleep

When it’s time to sleep, your body produces a hormone called melatonin. While all forms of artificial light damage melatonin production, the blue light of your computer screen or plasma television has a particularly large negative impact. Staying off the web in the hours before bed is a smart move.

And I remembered - this is easily solved with f.lux!

Try it and tell me if you like it. So far most people I've recommended it to like it.

I've been using it at work because I inherited a computer from someone with that installed and, truth be told, I don't see the difference. But even if there is no difference, I guess the placebo effect would still be beneficial.

Go back to not using it then. You'll see the difference.

I was using it, disabled it, but re-enabled it again. It was hard for me to measure a difference, but I'll try to be more aware this go round.

I have been using it for a couple months now, helps a bit on the eyes but sometimes I find it obvious and distracting. Although now going into the night I leave my lights on as I find my eyes straining if I'm in darkness while using the PC

While flux has more options, I also use dimmer for its smaller 'footprint': http://www.nelsonpires.com/software/dimmer/
Dimmer darkens the screen considerably more than flux.

blue light disturbs melatonin production, try switching your color profile between some low settings like 3.4k and 9.3k (which is bright with a lot of blue). the 3.4k makes lets you get sleepy

Not great for graphic arts, but the idea is sound. The lights color corresponds to the suns color which helps with circadian rhythm.

I'm not sure how you guys say there is no difference. For me, the difference is HUGE. I watch the colors on my screen change.

Do you not see colors changing? Do you not see white becoming a tan?

It's so nice for night time reading as well... I can't live without it!

I tried it 2 or so years ago and would notice the change in the screen tone but it doesn't mean anything, and I didn't notice anything different with how/when I slept. Going to try it out again simply because my sleeping habits have been shit, at their worst in my entire life the past 6 or so months so I definitely would have to notice if it improved anything.

I've been using it for four months and it works great.

Great application. Unfortunately there is no app available for the factory settings Apple device, but it's worth noting that you can install it on a jailbroken IPhone or Ipad.

My eyes were hurting before I tried it and now watching my computer's screen just feels relaxing... Shit that just sounded like what would you say on an informercial Confused but anyway it's a really nice app.

I use an app called "Black Light" on my Mac for the same purpose. I adjusted the color profile so it has a very red-orange hue since I couldn't just specify a color temperature.

Works a treat at night and anytime you want to be able to sleep but also want to use the computer for a bit. Needless to say, you can't do anything with colors when the app is active.

During the day, at my office computer, it's not really noticeable. But I just installed it at home and wow, it really makes a difference at night. I don't know if it's actual interaction with the light or just placebo, but it feels very nice. Thanks.

It's probably because at home you can dim the lights, whereas at work you're stuck under ugly horrible florescent lights.

Have it on the laptop and the phone. In terms of 'leverage' - 2 minute changes having huge impacts - F.lux is amazing.

Those who can't notice a difference should play with different color temperatures in the evenings.

I´ve used this software for one week now. Have defiantly been getting a lot more sleep than usual.

This thread deserves more awareness.

Been using it for a few months now and find it has been easier on the eyes at night, that is for sure.
Give it a try and see if it works for you. Can always uninstall it later.

Flux works on my laptop, but not for my iPhone 5s. I believe you have to have it unlocked to download Flux.

I usually just dim my phone screen late at night…what do you guys do without unlocking your iPhone?

If you guys want to see the difference F.Lux makes, if you're on your computer late at night temporarily disable the program. Your screen will suddenly get bright as shit and you'll definitely notice the difference.

I don't really realize the difference it makes, but that's just because I'm used to it.
