I'm sure, to guys that actually saw the legends play back in the day, they were both exciting and great.

I'm not faulting him for playing when he did, I'm just saying he didn't have the competition that players today have. I'm not trying to argue who's most exciting, that's not what we're talking about. I am saying that doc has nothing on Jordan. Doc was real good and still would be today, but he probably wouldn't be as good as Tim Duncan in his prime. Hell, Tim Duncan isn't even exciting, but he's one of the best to ever play the game. He plays simple, fundamental basketball, but he makes plays and wins championships.

You'd have to compare Tim to someone like Lew Alcindor. Doc didn't have competition like today? ... Magic, Bird, Parish, Jabbar, Gervin, Dantley, Lucus, Cowens, McAdoo, Malone, etc?

Ok I'll give that to you. I guess that's more an argument for wilt. Doc did play with some great players, but I still don't think he's even top 5 or maybe even 10.

IN the era that he played those guys, how many often did he dominate? How many rings? Did he lead those guys in scoring, blocked shots, passes or whatever? I assure you he didn't. Julius was and is cool. I saw him and Kemp at Footlocker in Central London during the 90s. But calling him the greatest is more than a stretch..it's a dislocation.

Bottomline: you guys can like who you like. For me, Doc is my fav of all time. That is not to say there aren't others I like, including the current guys like Kobe.

That's a different argument than saying he is best of all time. I didn't see him play but I have seen many clips and the documentary on him. He did revolutionize the game and changed it for the better. But as others said I don't even think he is a top 10 player of all time.

If he is your favourite, nothing wrong with that but then the thread title should have been different.

There's a difference between best and favorite. To say he was the best is just straight up not correct.

I think an overwhelming majority of the population would agree that MJ is the greatest of all time. You could ask an 8 year old girl that doesn't know anything about sports who the GOAT is and she would prob answer MJ.

Again, there are no absolutes. If Doc is the best to me, that is my opinion. He happens to be my favorite and the best.

If you or others think someone else is the best, I'm not trying to argue against what you think, based on YOUR criteria. Again, I can understand someone thinking Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Bill Russell, Clyde Frazier, Jerry West, Larry Bird or whomever is the best to them.

In baseball, some people might think Babe Ruth or others might pick Barry Bonds, Cal Ripkin or Joe Dimaggio, etc. In boxing, someone might pick Mike Tyson while another might say Ali, Joe Frazier or Rocky Marciano.

RE: Best NBA Player
Well the best dressed NBA Player of all time was easily Clyde Frazier:

You've been critical of how current NBA players dress, especially before the dress code. Do you still feel that there's been a decline in taste?

CF: I was happy when they implemented a dress code for the players, if only for a couple hours. You're professional and you should look professional. They have to realize they're role models. But the main part they don't realize is the image you project now is the one you're going to be remembered by. That's why we're talking about me. As Clyde, I was always dressed jazzy. I'm prospering from that today.

What are some of the biggest style lessons you've learned over the years?

CF: Being in New York you can just be yourself. You don't have to follow the crowd. That's how I became Clyde. When I started wearing a wide-brimmed hat it wasn't in vogue. Everybody was wearing a narrow brim. When I first wore it, the guys laughed at me. So I stuck to my guns and two weeks later the movie Bonnie and Clyde came out. So that's how I became Clyde, for my tenacity in believing in wearing what I want to wear.

You can't give opinions on him being the best without qualifying it with something. How does best rank? I could say Frank Bruno was the best boxer of all time because he sold HP Sauce..how does that rank in a debate?
You can't use best here, I have no problem with favourite..but throwing best in there, you have to defend it other than saying it's your opinion.

My All-time would be very similar, except I may have Olajuwon over Abdul-Jabar. Doc was a forward and Lebron has more skills than Doc at SF and Duncan is the best PF of all time.

RE: Best NBA Player
Well it would have to be Jordan and is this really debatable.
Although I will say Lebron is a beast and a freak of an athlete, I enjoy watching him play but sometimes I feel he plays when he wants too.
Kobe has to be on any list, the rings speak for themselves.
Magic was the man back in the day, great skills. Dr J was the man before that, someone questioned why he did not win more rings. In that "era" players never left a team like they do today, there were better teams unfortunately.

Now when it comes to boxing, Ali is the greatest of all time. Not to take anything away from Sugar Ray Robinson, who fought a incredible amount of fights or Tyson who probably would have knocked out Ali. But then we can not discount Jack Johnson, who use to fight 25 rounds with much heavier gloves.

Let's compare Michael Jordan to Doc
Athletic ability - Close but Michael jordan still holds the record for highest vertical coming into the league (tied with a no name)
Ball Skills - Jordan was more complete
Defense - Clearly Jordan
Popularity - Jordan Probably the most popular athlete of all time
Success - Jordan, 6 rings

I have no idea why we are still even talking about this.
The only guy who you can argue might be better is Bill Russell

Again, I don't have a problem with people making an argument for Jordan or any other player. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, which doesn't mean everyone has to agree with you. Doc is my personal best, but I also liked guys like Clyde, Jordan and the Iceman.

A lot of folks never even saw Doc win the chip twice in the ABA because there was no ESPN or internet back then. Doc, Magic/Bird, Jordan ... these guys all took the NBA to new levels. Doc did it in a $15 pair of Chuck Taylors, for much of his career.
