RE: Freelancing on Elance etc.
I'm way behind you guys, had some personal stuff going on which some of you know about. I have 'something' to take care of until the end of next week, and then after that I'm building my website and smashing odesk and elance hardcore.

As for guys doing history articles, that's my forte, but I never came across jobs like that when I was searching. I'm thinking of doing a Masters and possibly a PhD at some point in Nazism and the things preceding it, way back into the 1800's. If you need any advice if you get any article requests about it, I'll fire you over some of my essays.

Elance is asking me to upload a government ID in order to be verified. Did you guys had to upload any personal documents?

You don't have to be verified. I don't really think it helps that much but I could be wrong.

@bojangles: I signed up for the freelance forum pretty soon after BB posted about it but haven't been invited yet. You just have to get on the waiting list and...well, wait.

I dont know if the rules have changed but in order for me to submit a proposal I need to submit proof of my address to elance, otherwise the system won't allow me to bid for jobs.

Wait, you're in the DR aren't you? If you're trying to list your location as your home country but you're living outside of it they will make you prove your nationality.

I had this problem with another writing site because I was using a proxy when I registered so my IP made it look like I was in another country.

I think you'll either have to provide proof or list that you're from the DR. Unfortunately, the latter will likely have a negative effect on your ability to land prospects.

I verified my profile with Elance. They got me on skype and all I had to do was show them my driving license. Pitt, are you from the DR or just living there? If you hold a passport or driving license from another country you'll be fine.

I am a british citizen, I don't even have residence here in DR, I may just use DR as my location, not sure if I can re-change location, if not, I will have to sign up again using another name and another email address and list DR as my current location. (note that I am not using my real name on elance, reason why I won't be able to upload my government document on their site).

You can always say your elance name is your pen name or something. Give it a try.

Pitt, if you list D.R as a your location, make sure you mention something a long the likes of 'British expat' in the first line of your profile. They need to know you are a native speaker. Are you white? If not, I hope you are using a picture of a white guy. Looking black/hispanic and being in DR might make things difficult. It is unfortunate, but that is the way it is.

Has anyone had any experience guest blogging?

Ever since getting onto the den I've had it in my head that I want to get into a magazine.

I figured the way to do this is by writing for guest blogs in the same industry. For example, I have submitted a guest blog to http://frugalentrepreneur.com and will work on one today for http://www.under30ceo.com

I plan to move up until I can make it into a publication like Entrepreneur or something similar.

Without implicitly telling me to do something illegal, he implied that even if you overstayed that slightly, it would be very difficult for the relevant authorities to do anything, or even know anything, because (in my case anyway) you'd be travelling to different countries so often. Fuck paying tax!

Fuck it, lad. My accountant's told me one thing, my mate's step dad who works 6 months of the year abroad has told me another, you've got this, my mate has told me something else. I'm not gonna pay it. It sounds like I don't have to anyway but fuck it, I don't want to! Ha! I'll plead ignorance should I get caught! Wink

I don't like the layout of that writer's den forum, I think all forums should (by law!) have to use the phpBB template like this one. Really easy to navigate. However, there's so much info on there for getting into writing, in whatever form, it's a bit overwhelming. I think I'm going to set aside a few days and just listen to all the webinars etc. I can't see me staying on there for more than a few months, I'm just going to use it to get info. However, if you can actually get jobs from it, then obviously I'd stay.

Majority of the info is in the 'Resources' and 'E-Courses and Bootcamps' sections. I only really use the forums to bounce around ideas and check out other people's websites and query letters when writing my own.

News on my side, I've just had a guest blogging article accepted for Under30CEO which is due to be published in the 2nd week of December. Pretty happy with that.

RE: Freelancing on Elance etc.
Just landed a job writing......dating articles! Ha!

I went onto Elance and I'd received an invitation to apply for it. He wants 7 done a week at $10 an hour. I told him $20 an hour or 2.5cents a word, and blitzed him about how I'm the best writer he'll come across for the job. Adding that I have a blog about the subject with over 100,000 views helped my cause a bit!

Settled on $12 an article and I'll do 5 a week. It's only 500 words or so per article and I can rehash a few I've already done for about 4 weeks. The only task is to make them blue pill. Big Grin

As time goes on, I'm sure I'll get more money off this guy. He wants someone who can write in the long term for him. $60 a week right now, while I'm still in full time employment, is a good base. That'll end up being about £150 per month which is around half of a month's rent for a room in somewhere in Europe. Perfect starting point.
