Toys R Us agree to drop sexist labeling of girls' and boys' toys
[Image: article-2416131-1BB7E829000005DC-651_634x408.jpg]

Retail giant Toys R Us has agreed to drop sexist marketing and gender stereotyping of its products to girls and boys.
The toy store has bowed to pressure from campaign group Let Toys Be Toys, who represent thousands of shoppers concerned with sexism in the toy industry and the impact it's having on children.

After meeting with campaigners, the chain have said they will now ensure their marketing is more inclusive, as well as removing explicit references to gender in store.

The toy giant's adverts will show boys and girls playing with the same toys, such as kitchens, toy guns and Lego, and they have promised to review the way toys are represented in their upcoming Christmas catalogue.
Some headway was made last year when the Swedish branch unveiled a gender neutral advertising campaign showing girls shooting a toy gun and boys and girls playing together in a kitchen in response to complaints in Sweden.

Managing Director Roger McLaughlan said they will take further steps after meeting with representatives from Let Toys Be Toys.
'We very much enjoyed meeting Let Toys Be Toys. We will work with the Let Toys Be Toys team to ensure we develop the best plan for our customers,' he said.

Megan Perryman, a Let Toys Be Toys campaigner, said: 'We’re delighted to be working so closely with a major toy retailer and believe that there is much common ground here.
'Even in 2013, boys and girls are still growing up being told that certain toys are "for" them, while others are not. This is not only confusing but extremely limiting, as it strongly shapes their ideas about who they are and who they can go on to become.'
Let Toys Be Toys states on their website that the changes promised by Toys R Us follow in the footsteps of similar commitments they have had from several other major retailers including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Boots, The Entertainer and TK Maxx.

One of the campaign's founders, Tricia Lowther, 44, a self-employed copywriter from Durham, who has a five-year-old daughter, told the MailOnline in June: 'It does bother a lot of parents, we seem to have tapped in to a huge and growing sense of frustration with the way toys are promoted according to outdated, illogical and sexist stereotypes.
'I can't speak for any of the others but what pushed me to make a stand was the realisation, after my daughter was born, that gender stereotyping in children's products had become worse than when I was a child myself back in the Seventies. It's something that has become almost impossible to escape and is very limiting for children.'
More than 7,500 people have signed the Let Toys Be Toys petition so far on change.org, asking retailers in the UK and Ireland to remove gender labels, and organise toys by theme and function instead of by gender.

This would be great news if the world were made up of asexuals and hermaphrodites.

RE: Toys R Us agree to drop sexist labeling of girls' and boys' toys
It was inevitable. Western society slowly crumbles a bit at a time. At the rate we're going, it'll be just a few years before it's declared "sexist" to have men and women's separate apparel sections. I mean who is to say that because you are a woman it should be implied that you want to wear women's clothing rather than men's. Why not gender free department stores where dresses and men's suits are side by side?

Damn. Total brainwashing of the children. I wonder how men are going to unplug themselves 20 years from now? I pity them.

What kind of pathetic life must you have to go into a toy store and complain that there's a
"boys" section and "girls" section.

If I were the owner of Toys R Us I would print that petition out and wipe my arse on it.

They wouldn't have mixed changing rooms though would they, as it would be misogynistic. Or, perhaps the feminists would skip that one because if there were mixed ones, they would have another arena to invent rape claims in. Rape, of course, being looked at by a man of low sexual value.

They will soon say it's sexist to have "His and Her" box sets for Valentine's Day.

They will argue it should be renamed "Their".

One more step towards total fucked up ness! One more reason not to have your kids raised in this hell. Mine will be raised in a traditional country with traditional values where boys are boys and girls are girls.

I wonder when will they cross the Rubicon in sports, in that allowing girls to play alongsides men. Imagine an NBA match with teams composed of both men and women. Or football, or NFL or rugby. Or box or UFC. Someone high in power needs to put these clowns in their place and tell them that they cannot defy Mother Nature!

I pity the poor innocent children who have these "Modern Parents". Just wait guys, if these bastards have their way, children won't be called girls and boys. Rather "beings". You know? To stop being so damn sexist and antiquated. Mommy and Daddy will be terrible words that reinforced heinous gender roles that were used by the terrible patriarchy, so they are known as "Caretakers/Guardians". What a fucking joke. This only means having to step up and keep this garbage out of my nephew's lives. Jesus...

Look at the comment section though, the general response is in line with what people here think.

Nonetheless, this is bullshit and shows how much power women in our society really have. Feminists and single mothers are going to create an entire class of men that they have absolutely no desire to fuck whatsoever. Boys wearing pink dresses, and playing with barbies and riding pink bicycles and shit. Sometimes I wonder whether women do this consciously or unconsciously. I thought my generation had it bad, but the young boys of the next generation are being lined up for slaughter, ESPECIALLY the ones being raised by single mothers. They're fucked.

RE: Toys R Us agree to drop sexist labeling of girls' and boys' toys
How far will this shit go?

My friend worked in a headshop and you would be asked to leave if you said "bong" as opposed to "water pipe" due to the ridiculous laws in place surrounding that type of business. They had to do it or if a undercover was in there they could get in a shit load of trouble for selling "bongs", which are used to smoke weed, which is illegal.

Will people be escorted out of Toys R Us and Wal-Marts in the future for asking where the boys clothes are at? Or the girls toys? Will it go so far that asking something such as that would be considered "gender discrimination"? People would be escorted out for fear of offending some fat, loud and tattooed gender neutral cunt?

Ha this is hilarious. A little girl playing with a Rambo gun?

I believe boys are going to always want to play masculine toys like action figures etc.

If it's built in to how are, then it won't be a problem for guys.

I do think this will produce a lot more lesbians, and am not happy about that at all. I wish I felt the opposite. I want to believe that lesbians are cool, but they are, in my experience, totally entitled and crazy.

Here's what I got from that:

44.
5 year old daughter.

Indeed. According to my Dad, my mum was going through a bit of a hippie phase when I was born, and didn't want me playing with toy guns. Apparently, she bought me a toy hoover (vacuum cleaner)...Guess what? I imagined it was some sort of weapon.

It's already being done here in Toronto. Many places have "Unisex" bathrooms here via soft pressure from interest groups. Of course none of them have urinals, if a man feels more comfy standing to pee he is out of luck. I've even seen one that had a fused/forged seat design that you could not lift up.

What you just get is swamp pit of a bathroom and a good place to mess around with a girl when your at a bar. It's all petty politics because some of them arne't accessible. You can make a weak case that you just want evreybody even people in wheelchairs to be 'accommodated'. But when you have 2 bathrooms side by side, down a flight of shaky stairs, both unisex? Whom are you trying to fool.

The worst though was when I was at a jam they made us piss outside or use a outhouse. They turned the guys bathroom in the hall into a female one, so the girls had two bathrooms and we had none.

This is a slippery slope that will put them out of business. Pandering to special interest groups alienates the majority. Next they'll fold over Nerf guns, G.I. Joe, violent video games, anything related to military. What these corporate fools fail to realize is the nut jobs they are pleasing are broke and not buying shit. Simple economics will correct the problem.
