Total Recall: Arnold Schwarzenegger
Just got my Kindle Paperwhite working (wow) and bought Schwarzeneggers autobiography. Anyone else read it?

Speaking of the new Kindle...I just ordered the paperwhite after my 3G's screen somehow broke (one w the keyboard and free global internet).

Do the new ones have the same "experimental" global 3G web browser? I always thought it would be a great way to check email as a back-up or upon first arriving in a different city.

It's really good for an Arnold fan. Although a bit self congratulatory, and I suppose that's to be expected, but it is excessive.

It is a great book. Really opened my eyes to what a great businessman Arnold is. At times it felt more like a business book than a biography. I really enjoyed those insights.

I heard that Total Recall, not to be confused with Arnold, his bodybuilding book, is more an attempt to clear his reputation. That true?

Yes. He blabs on and on about feminism, too. "I was the first person to hire a woman for x position. I always hired women when others wouldn't."

The first half (where he talks about building his businesses, how he levered his position with Joe Weider to sell products like lifting belts for his own company, and how he built up his real estate empire) is cool.

The rest is trash and full of lies. For example, "Steroids only gave me as much of an advantage as a good sun tan," "I only cheated on Maria that one time," etc.

RE: Total Recall: Arnold Schwarzenegger
I posted a clip a few months back where Arnold describes how he was catapulted to sudden fame in a short 10 minute video. That 10 minute clip had far more detail than the 646 page book I am reading now.

In addition, the writing is generally OK, but so abysmal for a man who held the office he did. Who the FUCK did his editing?

I'm only 122 pages in so far, and I'm just completely staggered by the sheer focus and goal-orientedness of Arnold and I think to myself - am I a fucking idiot or what - virtually everything he did when young, I did as well. He just had excellent vision, as well. He also seems to have been born with a great deal of social smarts - he is clearly a ENTJ in the Myers-Briggs spectrum. Very limited self-reflection - which is actually a huge asset in the modern world.

As Mike says... so far it's a great view into the mind of a man who made it huge. But it's totally plausible he wrote it with Maria in mind, in which case as a good executive he'd lie as much as he had to. Is major success even possible while remaining completely true and honorable in all dealings?

Talking about kindle, a bit off topic here - I am finding great how I am reading books way faster than before. I find it easy to read books on kindle than traditional books. I bought a paperwhite version then i had to return it, I didn't like it, then i bought the kindle fire HD and I am loving it.

If you haven't bought one yet, make sure you get one.

I actually thought that it seemed as though he was alluding to the fact that he cheated on her a lot more. For example, I thought that the whole chapter on "The Truth" or whatever on his affair with Maria was a hasty afterthought, because he hadn't expected to be outed. It was (rightly) a fairly self congratulating book, but it isn't very apologetic. He doesn't even regret missing his brothers funeral.

RE: Total Recall: Arnold Schwarzenegger
OK I finished it.

Very self-congratulating, as the poster above indicated.

I really enjoyed the peak into his mindset. The drive is just really impressive, and the chapter on his success tips was fun. There IS stuff to learn from reading this book.

That said, his aesthetic sense is poor, but what matters in life, I think, is results at least as much as being a snob. Reading the book made me feel like putting myself out there more.

Reall? I love my paperwhite. What didn't you like about it?

Tell us about HD. Cost? Your favorite features?

Maybe we need a thread on eReaders.

Can you re-post that clip on this thread (or link to your previous post)?

RE: Total Recall: Arnold Schwarzenegger
I wished he spent more time talking about his childhood, early life, body-building, education, film career and business. He gets into politics before the book is halfway through and then it becomes just about that. Still a pretty incredible life story, he's lived 4/5 lives in one and each of those is incredibly impressive on its own. I would say its worth reading for the insight into his mindset alone, he even writes down 10 rules to succeed in life at the end.
