Let's not forget that military intelligence does a lot of this stuff too.

There are some articles about how the army/marines have software where they can control 10+ usernames and use it to shift the topic of the conversation, mostly blogs. One might think this is made up, but there were screenshots about how it was done.

Although his politics may be more left than many here would like, his intellectual honesty and rigor are second to none. He was one of the few that would take Obama and Democrats to task with as much vigor as he took the Bush Administration to task.

That "journalist" interviewing him could be a character from 1984: the outright hostility she had to Snowden, and the sycophantic blind support of the surveillance state was simply incredible to watch. I mean we talk about the US going downhill, but I think the UK tripped, fell, and took an early lead on us. Christ.

Yeah, I started reading him about 10 years ago when he was still writing Unclaimed Territory. MSM journalists hate him now, but he's actually a lot more polished and restrained these days, if you can believe that. When it was just him writing on his own blog, the guy took no prisoners and mercilessly lampooned the power worshippers in the media---many times by name, with Joe Klein and the WaPo neocons being favored (and worthy) targets.

It really is breathtaking to watch "journalists" falling all over themselves to prove their fealty to powerful elites by attacking one of their own. Part of this is because they don't want to anger their paymasters, but they also attack him because his sustained and meaningful challenge to power makes these clowns look like nothing more than the glorified stenographers they are. That's Glenn's real crime in their eyes---his brass balls and rigorous adherence to his principles exposes them as Potemkin journalists.

And it doesn't hurt that he appears to relish every minute.

Greenwald, although I disagree with a lot of his politics, is so far above his journalistic peers intellectually that any time they attempt to challenge him they come off looking foolish.

This vicious debate-rape committed by Greenwald upon Bill Maher and his 2 guests was pretty memorable

His incessant need for contrarianism leads him often to supporting any regime, no matter how noxious, which goes against the West.

Also, his whole bleeding heart campaign regarding his inability to marry his man-friend in the US and subsequent fleeing of the country because his 'love wasn't legal' smacked of narcissistic hyperbole.

Furthermore, in his earlier journalistic career, he served as a mouthpiece for any organisation willing to pony up hard cash - even taking money from the Koch brothers - though he does his best to hide that fact now.

That aside, I'm a big fan of most of his work.

RE: Watch Glenn Greenwald Rip This Dumb British Hag To Shreds
So Greenwald leaked some more Snowden docs that show Canada spied on Brazil's mining industry for its own economic advantage. Brazil's leader is now asking Canada to explain itself. Greenwald says there's more stuff about Canada on the way, including its spying on its own citizens and that of allied countries.

Fuckin' Canadians. First Senator Ted Cruz (Canadian-born) causes our government to shut down and now this shit. Blame Canada!

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/08/world/....html?_r=0

Quote:RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s president, Dilma Rousseff, crisply demanded an explanation on Monday from Canada over revelations that a Canadian intelligence agency had spied on Brazil’s mining and energy ministry and a top Brazilian diplomat, a development contributing to festering resentment in Brazil over the targeting of the nation by foreign intelligence agencies.

Ms. Rousseff called the spying “unacceptable between countries that are supposed to be partners,” expressing her indignation in a stream of Twitter messages. Her government summoned the Canadian ambassador in Brazil, Jamal Khokhar, to respond to the news report describing the Canadian surveillance, which was broadcast Sunday night on the Globo television network.

The report fueled speculation from senior Brazilian officials and Ms. Rousseff herself that the spying may have involved efforts to obtain information for Canadian mining companies, instead of focusing on security threats. While ties are generally warm between Brazil and Canada, the countries have a history of bitter trade disputes involving aircraft and beef exports.

The report, based on documents provided by Edward J. Snowden, the former contractor for the United States’ National Security Agency, to Glenn Greenwald, an American journalist living in Brazil, showed how the Canadian agency, the Communications Security Establishment Canada, targeted the cellular and electronic communications of personnel within Brazil’s mining and energy ministry.

According to the Globo report, the Canadian agency also monitored the telephone communications of Brazil’s former ambassador to Canada, Paulo Cordeiro de Andrade Pinto, now an under secretary in Brazil’s Foreign Ministry for Africa and the Middle East, and recommended cooperating with the N.S.A.

The information about Canada’s surveillance activities comes after months of revelations of the N.S.A.’s spying on Brazilian targets, including Ms. Rousseff, her top aides and Petrobras, the national oil company. Disappointed with American explanations of the spying, Ms. Rousseff recently postponed a state visit to Washington that had been scheduled to take place this month.

Publicly at least, Brazil’s call for an explanation was met by silence in Canada.

Lauri Sullivan, a spokeswoman for the Communications Security Establishment, said the agency “does not comment on foreign intelligence-gathering activities.” Officials for Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office and the Department of National Defense, which is responsible for the agency, also declined to comment.

While there was little criticism from politicians and prominent Canadians about the eavesdropping, there did seem to be some confusion about why Brazil would have been a target.

Like those of the N.S.A., most of the Communications Security Establishment’s activities are shielded from public view. Founded during World War II, it operated under secret cabinet orders until its role was clarified under antiterrorism legislation introduced in late 2001.

The agency has a budget of about $442 million a year and a sweeping mandate that allows it to acquire “foreign intelligence” that may be of use to Canada. While technically part of the Canadian military, it works closely with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, a civilian agency, and is building a new headquarters adjacent to its offices.

Wesley Wark, a professor at the University of Ottawa who studies Canada’s national security agencies, said he had never found any evidence that they gather intelligence for private business. He said it was unlikely that the Brazilian interceptions were any different. “It’s not clear to me in the Brazilian case what they would get for the risks they would take,” he said. Instead, he said, Canada most likely was processing data from Brazil that was captured by the N.S.A. through the Five Eyes security alliance that includes Britain, New Zealand and Australia.

Simon Romero reported from Rio de Janeiro, and Ian Austen from Ottawa.

Some of these revelations are akin to the Inspector being shocked that gambling is going on in Rick's cafe. I thought it was common knowledge that friendly countries engage in economic espionage.

Haha...I do find it funny that a Canadian is technically responsibly for US the government shutdown.

Also, the bit about Canada spying on its own citizens does not surprise me one bit. The day the NSA revelations came out I was sure Canada was spying on its citizens. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the NSA helped Canada set-up its spying operations.

I like how Greenwald pointed out that moving forward the internet will either become the world's easiest spying tool for governments to spy on their own citizens or people will have to fight back to ensure that it remains a tool of information, knowledge, and democratization. My money is on the former. Maybe I am pessimistic but I see this more as a 1984 scenario than the people actually caring and fighting back. Hell, the NSA is still at it and just a few months ago didn't Congress increase its budget?

They don't even have shame anymore. They just defend it under the guise of keeping us safe. So much bullshit.
