The best no bullshit fitness and weight traning site I've seen
I came across this site the other day while searching for workout regimens:

http://scoobysworkshop.com/

I really like his fundamentals, no-bullshit, no-marketing approach. His "hall of shame" page is fun to read as well. He's not there to make money, he just wants to help people out.

His methods are antiquated. Have you heard of crossfit or gym jones?

There's nothing antiquated about Golden Age of Bodybuilding style training. That style of training is what has made classic, muscular physiques since the 1950s.

I've heard of XFit and Gym Jones. Those are great training programs to blow your body out and be hobbling around in your 40s.

Scooby is 50.

How many 50 year olds doing XFIt look like him?

How many people can even sustain the "CrossFit lifestyle". Exactly.

RE: The best no bullshit fitness and weight traning site I've seen
Like that site.

Totally agree with what MikeCF is saying.

CrossFit is not for everyone. Crossfit style work outs can tax the body heavily and raise cortisol levels which drain the adrenals and contribute to hormonal problems such as lowered testosterone and fatigue. Especially if you have a bad aerobic capacity. You need to crawl before you walk and walk before you run, literally.

My buddy owns a crossfit and I laugh when I see all these fat out of shape people coming in and signing up. CrossFit should be for elite athletes, people who have a very good aerobic capacity.

Went to a sports doctor recently and he called me out big time. Said I am in an anaerobic surplus and have an aerobic deficiency. Turns out even the so called 'cardio' I thought I was doing was becoming anaerobic because my heart rate was always to high. What can I say I like to push myself.

Now, I've taken a break from all lifting and crossfit style workouts for the past 3 weeks. Instead I've been doing a 10 minute walk warm up, then a light jog at a heart rate of 135-145 (I have a heart rate monitor) for 30 minutes followed by a 10 minute cool down walk. Usually five days a week. In this time I haven't really lost any muscle but lost some fat and I'm looking more ripped than ever.

At a heart rate of 135-145 I am burning all fat for energy and building my aerobic capacity. I did 3 miles in 36 minutes at my fat burning heart rate and now the test is to get those 3 miles done faster and faster at the same heart rate. At that point I'm going to re introduce body weight exercises (pull ups, dips, squats) and after that re introduce strong lifts with the 3 minute breaks in between sets.

Stress is cumulative and I didn't realize how much my workouts were doing more harm than good to my health. I looked great but didn't always feel great energy and libido wise and now I know why. We live in this no pain no gain society but really you should feel good after a workout, not drained and exhausted.

If you have fatigue and low hormones take a good look at your aerobic capacity and workout routine.

Being jacked and bulked out is cool but not if it puts your test and sex drive in the shitter.

I must respectfully disagree, especially regarding Crossfit.

Mark Rippetoe--a leading expert on fitness and training--has made some very salient criticisms of Crossfit, while giving it due credit, in this article:

http://www.t-nation.com/training/crossfi...d-the-ugly

None of the Crossfit Games athletes use Crossfit-branded workouts in their training. They're following principles that are closer to Scooby's.

Yup, he's got an impressive lineup of videos that covers a lot of material

Watched one just last night

He does get a fair bit of hate online, mainly related to steroid accusations and that he is a phoney because he promotes all natural bodybuilding.

True or not, his videos are no less informative

Sarcasm is often misunderstood in text, especially if people don't know your personality because you don't have too many posts.

Website looks promising, although Mark Rippetoe,s Starting Strength is in the Hall of Shame. I see his point, though, and he did say it was a good book.

Interestingly, he also put it on his recommended books page. Seems he thinks it's a quality book, but with a few issues:

http://scoobysworkshop.com/book-recommendations/

Quote:So now that I have talked up this book, its time for a warning. Mark Rippetoe has the rather arrogant opinion that his workout strategy is best for *everyone*, its not. If he had his way, my 95 year old grandmother would be squatting. Depending on your age, physical history, and goals the exercises, form, and techniques he presents in his book may or many not be appropriate. Please read, what are your fitness goals for some assistance in determining what types of workout plans might be the most appropriate for your goals.

Eros is a personal friend of mine. Definitely meant no sarcasm by his post, but he is definitely part of the Crossfit cult. He's a natural athlete at a high level though. He put up WOD records at his local box.

As for me, I'm on the same shit Midnight Special is on. Anyone who has met me here knows I'm a big guy. I've been easing off the weights the past couple weeks and doing straight cardio and calisthenics. HR was at 137 while doing my light jogging which is perfect for me.

If he isn't natural he shouldn't claim he is. That's weak IMO. Though, I have no idea if he is or isn't. However, dude looks great for his age. Hell, he looks great for a 25 year old as far as his body goes. Reminds me of one of those older dudes who would retire to some small expat community in Belize, or even Hawaii, and bang all of the other dudes wives on the DL.

The guy I follow closely is Ross Enamait. Lots of DIY tricks in particular. High integrity.
The other day he had a Facebook post that he almost never bench presses, but put up 300-something that day. When asked how that's possible, he credited weighted dips.
Plus, the guy skips rope like a ninja. The intro to his skipping video is insane.

I like Ross Enamait's training website for no-bullshit advice. He sells some great products and training videos as well. I'd never seen or heard of a guy doing one-armed ab wheel rollouts with two weight vests on until I saw his website.

Scooby's stuff is great though. His 100 pushups guide is pretty awesome.

I've been watching a lot of Scooby's stuff too. Good info for the most part, though his physique is quite a bit bigger than I'd ever want to go.

He's vegetarian, by the way. Not 100% strict though - he does it for his views on health but has a small portion of meat one or two times a week.

I wonder if he was a vegetarian before he put on the size, or if he switched after he already put on the muscle?

That's a good question, Rio. I'm curious myself.

Here's his page about diet, vegetenariasm, etc, but it doesn't make it clear how long he's been doing it. http://scoobysworkshop.com/vegetarianism/

Looks to be quite a few vegan and vegetarian bodybuilders these days if you search images (then you can just follow to read up on their stories, etc). http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=body...ORM=HDRSC2

I'm not preaching it, but I find it interesting.

Quite a few of them have noticeably leaner physiques, but I actually think it looks better than the traditional swollen bodybuilder look. This guy here is pretty big though, and he doesn't consider himself a bodybuilder (trains for strength).

I guess Scooby doesn't consider himself a bodybuilder either - he does triathlons, which is why he goes easy on the legs.
That Eliot Hulse guy has a good video on it and seems to think it's definitely possible.

Here's Bill Pearl, the guy he mentions in the video. He is a bodybuilder and won 2 Mr. Universe's as a vegetarian. He didn't start out that way but in the pic below he's in his 70s, I believe, and had been a veggie-fiend for 25 years at that point:

Ross is the shit and has been for years. Its not all glossy, marketing, "i have a product to sell you" oriented, its real advice with a real practitioner.
