I liked the first episode, but in my opinion, pretty much stayed the same like in Season 1 (detectives with issues, dark presentation). Of course they put Rachel McAdams in it, because of some critics for season 1, who said that there weren't enough "strong" female characters.

I really enjoyed Collin Farrell's performance. The scene at the bully's house was kinda crazy but great.

We will see how it goes. The whole episode seemed just like warm up, until the three cops have been put together at the end.

Shows of this nature are nuanced, draw on motifs/symbolism, with adrenaline inducing sequences meted out to serve the plot - not the audience members too impatient to let the story percolate and unfold tastefully.

We're one episode in. Hindsight is 20/20, so no-one had a clue about the greatness that was season one at the same stage. Give it time, or come back at the end of the season, should the reviews be hyped to your standards.

You're right. On second thought, I didn't get enough sleep when I watched it yesterday so I didn't get a feel for the plot's subtleties and nuances.

I will post a detailed, proper review once I view the episode on its entirety on a lucid state.

Still, on first impression it can't hold a candle to Season 1. Even the opening theme is understated. Hopefully it (the show, not the theme) will improve on the following episodes. I did enjoy the parts related to Colin Farrel's ginger fat kid, though.

Colin Farrell's American accent is pretty on point. I always wonder if it's as difficult for Brits to fake an American accent as it is for us to feign an English accent (like Natalie Portman in "V for Vendetta"). The US is huge, and has tiny pockets of accents. I cringe whenever someone other than Matt Damon or Ben Affleck drop a Boston Accent. There is one movie in history that gets it right - and that is "Good Will Hunting."

As I said before, first episode just introduced us to the charactera, but with this episode its really picking up. Looking to be a great season in my opinion. Also, Vince Vaugn is solid.

*edit* Holy hell was not expexting that ending.

I agree I didn't expect Rachel McAdams to show her tits.

I am liking Colin's character a lot. I thought he was pretty awesome in "In Bruges"

Who are the fucking female typists who wrote this shit show? Jesus Christ, what a drop in quality from season 1 to season 2.

The dialogue is so goddamn cringeworthy.

SPOILERS

Have you guys also noticed that of the four main characters one male character is infertile and was likely cuckolded and the other was raped by his mother and is probably a fag? Colin Farrell's character is a shitty angry beta who is attached to a kid that is clearly not his and "supports feminism by having body image issues." Even the probable fag is more manly than him.

Throw in feminist super-cop and the corpse having its dick and balls blown off and you start to see a pattern here. This seems like a show written by retarded female typists. Worse yet, all the lines sound like a cheap ass parody of Rust's philosophizing from season 1 and they seem to have forgotten how to create suspense or mystery.

Watched the second episode, and I have to say I am sticking with my previous assessment of the show: it is dogshit.

This season is as slow as molasses and the plot is weak. Ferrell, the only redeeming character, is now gone.

I honestly am going to have a hard time making it through the remaining episodes.

Haha I actually thought that line was really funny. I think he was just taking the piss out of her.

The two stupidest lines so far have been the "sucking a robots dick" from Farrell and the "I never do anything out of hunger, not even eating." The characters aren't supposed to be as smart as Rust, so their attempts to sound smart fall short. My opinion anyways.

Also with regards to the final scene he's alive, I remember seeing future scenes with him in the trailer. Maybe rock salt like Kill Bill? Plus that shot woulda torn him apart.

I'm guessing he takes a beating though, cause like he said "a good beating always provokes personal growth". Kinda wish he was dead, I hate stupid twists and comebacks. I don't the show to get all "Homeland" on us.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective
I agree with the posters on them dropping the ball halfway through that first season. How can they promise so much with that plot and then let it go limp like that?

I mean, I did enjoy the last episode - it just didn't feel like the same story anymore. This was a show and a theme that could have gone on for a few more seasons, but the director decided to wrap it up with that half-ass plot because he wanted to do something "different" by having different stories every season.

There were way too many loose ends and unexplained leaps.

I could see it working in some context, but in this one, they left a lot on the table.

I generally like Collin Farrell but don't know if I'll even bother with the second season.

Spoiler Alert - well not really since it has been discussed already but anyway...

I don't think he is dead. Makes no sense.

Collin's agent (CA): hey got on an opporunity for you.
Collin ( C): great what it it?
CA: second season of true detective
C: loved the first season. Tell me more
CA: well you would play a seedy detective who has been bought. You'll be a nut but one of the best characters in the show. Audiences will really enjoy your performance.
C: great I'm in
CA: well there is just one thing I need to tell you or else I wouldn't be doing my job.
C: what is it mate?
CA: you get killed off in the second episode. With a fuckload of unanswered questions and not everything about your character is revealed.
C: fuck ya lets do it. That makes my decision even easier. I'll do it for a dollar.

Would a shotgun blast to a bullet proof vest at that range definately kill you? Genuine question. It would at least break all your ribs even if it didn't penetrate the vest, no?

I think they are going to make Tyler Kitsch's character a closet homosexual, there were some subtle cues if anyone noticed. It makes sense, the bad ass girl cop wasn't enough to fully SJW this show, they needed to inject some gayness in the mix.

Just the change in themes has made this show worse. They didn't have to do a carbon copy of the first season, but it was refreshing to see two flawed men, who were very different yet good at heart, find redemption throughout a long journey to bring evil sons of bitches to justice.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective
The dialogue has mostly been sub par this season. I thought there would be a glimmer of the atmosphere of season 1 when in the beginning of this episode Vaughn's character gave his bedridden monologue about his childhood. When he talked about everything being paper mâché my ears perked up. And then his lines fell flat again.

I knew that the first season was something special when in episode 1 McConaughey delivered Rust's line "I contemplate the moment in the garden. The idea of allowing your own crucifixion."

I'll continue to watch this show but it has fallen victim to the sophomore slump.

Just watched the 2nd episode. I will read spoilers here for the 3rd and if they don't bring back CF's character, then episode 2 will be the last episode for me.

Too many radical macho-feminist themes and cuckoldry going on.

Laugh out loud about all these sjw and feminism comments. Velcoro makes a crack about supporting feminism for his body image issues which falls flat with rachel mcadams. He is just trying to game her. And she admits that practically any man can over power her which is why she is so obsessed with knives and needs to be tough. She understands her weakness.

This show is dark and displays the characters each going through their own shit. It isnt celebrating much of anything or jamming an agenda down our throats. It allows us to get a taste of what being screwed up really is all about without us having to ruin our own lives.

I was a big fan of the first season and i will continue to anxiously watch this season every week because its still damn good and blows everything else out by a mile. Everyone is flawed. And everyone is fighting their own battle. I welcome the disarray.

I do wonder if some of our opinions about Season 2 are a reflection of how well Season 1 ended. Forgetting all the build up in first few episodes of Season 1.

I saw episode 1 of Season 1 and just couldn't get into it. I actually waited until the entire season was over and people kept raving about it that I gave it another chance. I don't know if others thought the beginning of season 1 was slow, but it was for me. Enough to stop watching until after the season was over.

I thought that body issues joke was funny. People just need to stop with thinking that "being offended" is a full time occupation.
