Shootout this last episode as good or better than the drug house raid in season 1 in my opinion.

Au contraire! Alexandra Daddario's performance is season one was EXTREMELY "strong"...she nearly knocked Woody Harrelson out with her tits! Can you think of a BETTER performance by a female character in a TV series? I rest my case!

The shootout was stupid. Assault rifle rounds, especially 7.62x39, rip through civilian car bodies like a hot knife through butter. This is something the gay soldier should've known. I doubt any of those cops would've made it out of that unscathed.

I agree, the main thing I did not like was the first shooter using his rifle on full auto and getting headshots from two stories above. Plus the cops were having discussions mid firefight with no ear protection, anyone who has ever fired a gun with no ear protection knows you cannot hear a damn thing after two shots, much less during a full blown shootout. The never ending gun magazines were some bullshit too, the scene came off as forced. The only realistic thing was the poor innocent people caught in the crossfire. This is why I like your comments TheWastelander, you are on the level about basic shit like realistic gun knowledge , basic physics and ballistics. You cannot get entertainment criticism and commentary like this on mainstream sites like Slate or The Atlantic.

The shootout was over the top. Not realistic at all. My guess is they were trying to top the "hood shootout" scene in season 1.

Also, how does a guy pick someone up and have gay sex all night long and not remember it? Aside from getting slipped a mickey, that is unheard of.

He was drinking doubles the night before, plus it's possible he remembered and was trying to play stupid, although that didn't seem to be the case.

The shootout was too much, I didn't like that they go in with ten cops and only main three are left. I hate shit like that. I liked how well the gay dude was under pressure though, he was the only one with ammo left and got two of the five kills.

I'm also happy the bitch didn't use the knife. That would have been some bullshit. She looked really nervous too, which is realistic.

I agree about the bottom-less mags for the bad guys, the cops were always reloading though. The shit from the window was a lot, but it was an experienced dude, and he was constantly ducking for cover.

---

Also I always read reviews of shows/movies/books after I finish them and I am amazed at the amount of people hating on this. Season 1 was amazing, "A+" stuff, but this season can't be lower than "B+". They aren't even just saying it's mediocre, they're going for the jugular. I mean compared to fucking CSI and NCIS this shit is amazing.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective
I was never a fan of the cop shows but watched season 1 because of the hype. This season reminded we why I'm not a fan. I get it, your home life is terrible, you're a depressed empty shell of a person who drowns their sorrow in alcohol. Half the scenes being a bar or watching the guy on a rooftop drinking or drinking in his car is so trite. The only cliche missed is the socially awkward but amazing at his job nonsense. I can't think of a cop show that doesn't have almost every one of those points. I haven't watched The Wire yet but everyone creams themselves to that show.

My main issue with Hollywood fantasy with guns is that they show behaviors that people will imitate in real life and get them hurt or killed. I can accept a TV show taking liberties with all sorts of things but this is the kind of stuff that has real world consequences.

For instance, during the Virginia Tech shooting some people misidentified the shooter's gunshots as firecrackers going off because they believed gun shots were a lot louder. This is likely because Hollywood often inserts gunfire sounds after filming and ramp up the volume.

http://www.newsweek.com/tragedy-virginia-tech-98053

Quote:Derek O'Dell, the sophomore biology major taking Elementary German, also thought the popping sounds were coming from nearby construction. Someone in the class wondered aloud if the noises were gunshots, but someone else said no; gunshots are a lot louder. Then a man dressed in a black leather jacket, dark-colored jeans and a cap entered the room. He did not say anything or hesitate.

But far worse than that is showing fictional law enforcement officers (supposed professionals) taking cover behind what is, at best, concealment. There are two main types of obstacles you can put between you and gunfire: cover and concealment.

Cover is something that can stop incoming rounds. A thick concrete highway barrier, a big tree trunk, sandbags, large objects made of solid steel, etc. can all be good cover. I've personally experimented with part of a highway barrier my friend had in his backyard that looks like this:

It stopped multiple rounds from a WASR-10 (semi-auto AK clone) without much more than surface damage to it. It would've taken all night shooting in the exact same spot to get through it.

Concealment is basically anything that's not considered cover that you can hide behind (typically before the shooting starts or if the shooter doesn't see you and you're not going to return fire). Bullets will go right through concealment. A car is good example of concealment. It is not cover.

If someone is shooting at you and you hide behind a car there's a good chance you will be wounded or killed.

If there are any skeptics out there, look up videos on YouTube of people shooting cars with guns.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective
The shoot out in this episode was supposed to be this season's version of Rust during the heist in the projects from episode 4 of season 1.

The best part about it was watching Rachel McAdam's run in tight jeans.

It'll be interesting to see the fallout though. Just about everybody except the lead characters died in this firefight-- hopefully the show will pick up from here.

I did enjoy the little exchange where McAdam's is called into her boss's office for a sexual impropriety complaint and says "if I were a man this wouldn't be happening" and "you realize they're all high-fiving, right?"

She wants jump on whatever dick she desires at the moment without consequence and if anyone calls her out on it she shouts sexism. At least that part of the show is realistic.

That little smug look on that bitch during the meeting with Kitsch's character, for dramatic effect pisses me off. I can't stand people like that, especially if they're like that and lying.

I liked this episode. Things are heating up in all directions. Was sort of the first one that started to pull some stuff together. All the previous episodes seemed to be all set up. Which of course needs to happen to give the audience some necessary info. Just wish it wasn't that many episodes.

So Colin Farrell killed an innocent man all those years ago?

Damn, that's some heavy shit to come to terms with.

That may have been Farrell's best moment of the season so far. The level of inconsistency is killing this season. The show vacillates between good drama and parody-- for instance the line from Frank “it’s like blue balls, in your heart" was terrible.

Woodrugh's mom is a straight up bitch. When Woodrugh learned that his mom had taken his $20K without asking and said that she “had every reason to expect help” translates to “I’m entitled to your money." Fucking disgusting. I like when women claim to be owed something because they carried a baby for 9 months—as if they had no participation at all in getting pregnant. Yet another example of women not wanting to take responsibility.

I hope she takes a bullet to the dome before season's end, however unlikely that may be.

Lucky,

His mom was a cold hearted bitch. At one point she was saying something along the lines of "You could have been a scrape job" or something like that. Was really trying to guilt him.

Cunt.

I'm almost expecting to find out that Woodrughs mom sexually abused him as a kid. They have a very weird dynamic.

The dialogue is so goddamn cringeworthy.

Season one's dialogue was an order of magnitude better than season two's. Maybe it was McConaughey's performance as Rust Cohle but his nihilistic perspective seemed very authentic.

Season One quotes :

"Death created time to grow the things that it would kill."

"The world needs bad men. We keep the other bad men from the door."

"If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward then, brother, that person is a piece of shit. And I’d like to get as many of them out in the open as possible. You gotta get together and tell yourself stories that violate every law of the universe just to get through the goddamn day? What’s that say about your reality?"

"This place is like somebody's memory of a town, and the memory is fading. It's like there was never anything here but jungle."

They go on and on

Season Two

"Blue balls in your heart"(sic)

I knew it was going to be hard to live up to season one but I didn't know they were going to turn into a comedy in the effort

Well weren't a lot of those Season 1 dialogues "influenced" [plagiarized]? That's what made them good, they were written by a real writer.

This season's dialogues are what a dumb guy would think a smart guy sounds like.

Edit:

The season 1 dialogues were largely taken from horror writer Thomas Ligotti's non fiction work "The Conspiracy Against the Human Race".

While I think it wasn't outright plagiarism because series creator Nick Pizzolato had openly acknowledged the influence, they probably should've stolen from Camus or Hemmingway for the second season to make this work. Imagine Rust Cohle as "The Stranger".

But weren't all of those quotes from Rust? Those type of deep thoughts just wouldn't make sense coming from the three main characters of this season as none of them are the philosophical type. Hell, two of them are raging alcoholics, and the other one is a compulsive gambler with daddy issues. Don't get me wrong, the dialogue isn't as good and this season isn't as good as season 1, but season 1 had more philosophical elements that just wouldn't sound authentic coming from these damaged characters.

The problem with a lot of these shows is that they are trying to imitate Heath Ledger's "You know how I got these scars" speech but failing completely.

I have especially noticed this in the recent Game of Thrones, and now in this season of True Detective. Instead of telling you something, or showing you emotions through acting, the characters will spew useless exposition through some dumb story to try to sound cool, and show a deeper inner conflict that "reveals" the psychotic nature of the character.

The biggest culprits are the Obara Sand "Tears or Spear" speech in GoT, and the Vince Vaughn "Rats" speech from TD. Stop the useless exposition and forward the plot.

You don't get there till you get there

Season 1 they got lucky as McConaughey and Harrelson fit their roles perfectly. It rarely happens. Shit was like Jordan and Pippen. They should've just stayed with those two and kept the show going instead of this "new season, new characters" stuff. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
