There are nights when the denials and defenses run out and the reality sets in that that you amount to nothing. You have nothing; you have no friends, no family, no money, no power, no prospects, no options, no future.

And on those nights you do exactly what Colin Farrell did. You blow your paycheck on drugs and liquor and make a shitpile of your apartment. It was absolutely realistic.

Yep, I thought it played out almost perfect. Although I was expecting him to have a heart attack after going through that 8 ball like it was his 21st birthday. Watching that scene also made me realize I should probably never have a firearm in the house.

After ep 6 I am interested in seeing how the story finishes and I think they have done a solid job with the main 4. However, this season doesn't deserve to have the same title as season 1, they are not even close to the same league. I don't like this format, starting from scratch each season. It worked for season 1 because of the acting and writing, but this season will be over soon and it feels like the ride just started.

Also, that party was pretty weak based on the previews saying it was going to make Eyes Wide Shut look tame.

I second that. Absolutely realistic confirmed from my own experiences.

Super lame. While you can see enough to know that sex is occurring, you'd be at a loss to describe what you witnessed in much detail.

Most of it is viewed through the heroine's drugged out eyes, so it's hazy as hell.

Definitely not masturbation worthy.

One of the better episodes this week.

Final scene was adrenaline pumping, if not predictable toward the end.

RE: PSA: Dont sleep on True Detective
I'm definitely liking Frank more and more. Vince Vaughn is probably my favorite so far. I like the other characters too, but they all seem so sad and weepy or just too emotional. I get it is about drama, but they seem to lack the grit of the first season. While Frank doesn't have that grit either, he does seem somewhat methodical and a bit believable as a mafia type who has had, as he said this last episode, 45 years in the business.

I don't understand what the hell is so bad about those parties.

And yes I certainly want Frank to triumph in the end here.

With the parties I think they are trying to tap into the disgust/power dynamic of the first season with the kiddie death cult but are largely failing, and need to change it up this season, because they are going with the feminist narrative of it being inherently exploitive or something. We got a bit of that in this last episode with McAdams character getting all righteous with the whore and the whore firing back that she liked it and she fucked it all up by thinking she was kidnapped. That somewhat mirrors the real life feminist porn/prostitution wars and is probably added for the same reason they need a tough female cop as the leader.

The most difficult thing for me this season is trying to figure out the incredibly convoluted story line.

I was reading through the post episode discussion on r/True Detective and I am not the only one trying to figure it all out or lost as hell. You have these characters with 30 seconds of screen time all of a sudden being major players and it is quite confusing. The best explanation/recap I have found is this one:

Quote:1992, the cops and Caspere organize the robbery, they use the diamonds to buy into Vinci positions through Mayor Chessani. Caspere and Anthony Chessani (son of the mayor) start to make deals behind the Mayor's back. Anthony wants his fathers' position. Anthony is backing the russian (Olav?) as part of the power move. Olav wants what frank has, and he wants in on the land deal. Blake helps Olav. Olav, Anthony, and Caspere throw the orgy parties in order to blackmail high ranking government officials, and high ranking corporate officials (McCandless from Catalyst). Someone kills Caspere though. Maybe one of the kids orphaned by the jewelry store robbery. EVERYONE wants the hard drive Caspere had, because of the blackmail. No one seems to know anything about why he was murdered though. Burris, Halloway, and Mayor Chessani had nothing to do with the parties. That was a Caspere and Anthony Chessani thing with Olav. That's my understanding so far anyway.

How would that work?

I saw some people saying that they thought she might betray him in the finale next week. Their thinking was that she looked strange in the scene with the body. I guess she did look a bit strange, but I kinda doubt she betrays him. If anything I think Frank might be the only "good guy" to live. I bet he will have to sacrifice something though, and that will be his wife. Maybe like a Dexter type of ending where Rita dies.

I am not sure, I haven't re-watched the episodes, but it seems like they subtly change the chorus in the intro song each episode. I think that song is painting a picture of how it all ends. I bet they only get a few of the main bad guys. Ray and the Chick either end up dead or wounded and serving prison time. The main guys, like the mayor and who ever else is behind this stuff and on the blackmail tape end up in the clear with maybe a few of the crooked cops dead.

I am betting Frank goes berserk and kills the Russians, but then ends up finding his wife dead by the hands of the cartel who he must have just pissed off by burning shit down. If I remember correctly, they were supposed to get three nights a week selling their drugs in the club. So, they are going to be looking for vengeance at the same time the Russians and black mountain/cops/corrupt city officials are. I think this finale is going to be much bloodier and sad that first seasons.

I know most cops drive Crown Vics but I think the car that picked up the cop that killed the handsome gay cop was the same as Ani's partners car. Everybody is a crook.

Oh shit. that is a good point. But didn't he change cars with her dad and sister? I forget what car he was driving at the end of the exchange, but he was driving a similar, if not the same car, before the exchange. What would be really crazy is if it was her dad, but I kind of doubt it.

For those trying to make sense of the plot, this thread on IMDB is excellent.

Pretty Intense episode. Looking forward to the square off between Frank and the Russians for the $12 mill.

I noticed the intro seemed a little different. Did they change the lyrics?

The last 2 episodes were pretty good. However, I kind of have to blend out a big part of the reality when watching this season.
I felt bad for Kitsch did not expect that. Moreover, it is a shame that they forced this gay shit on his character . I think he would have been a great alpha without all the gay madness.

Seriously, wtf does kitsch not check the corner before getting on the phone. If I had been in a shoot out the last thing I am doing is letting my guard down until I am safely back home.

And not all doors block cell phone reception.

I get it, it is a tv show. But that was a weak way to die. But the writers probably want the reaction I am having rather than he caught a bullet in a shoot out, where I'd be that's just the way it goes.

The more I review that bit in my mind, the more I get annoyed.

He had to smash the door open, how was the other guy waiting there at the right time with a car at the exit (different location to the entrance, too).

I'm just going to try and enjoy the experience while not getting too hung up on the details. Not long left. I hope Vince Vaughan survives.

I would have checked the opening to my right and then a jump spin when I looked around the door. The gunman probably isn't expecting a aerial target. I know I'm full of it Laugh

Anyway let's see how the last 90 mins resolve everything. It better not be it was all a dream and kitsch is alive in his bed.

For anyone who hasn't watched it yet. My recommendation is to binge watch the entire season in a day. Otherwise, you will be scratching your head trying to figure out what exactly is going on.

And if you did watch and are still unclear (most of us), Slate did a great job of laying out all the plots and clues.

Give yourself 20-25 minutes. Not going to copy & paste because they did the work (and deserve the clicks), but here is a sample:

http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2015...eason.html

Why did Burris kill Woodrugh?

So, at this point, Burris and Holloway, very high-ranking Vinci police officers, are desperately trying to keep the Caspere case closed, because any further investigation into it will reveal not only their hand in the 1992 robbery-murder but also how they are profiting from the soon-to-be built rail line: Remember, Holloway was at the sex party and is in cahoots with Catalyst too. (There are basically two parts of this conspiracy—the Holloway-Burris-Dixon-Caspere arm and the Tony Chessani-Osip-Blake-Caspere arm. They are both making money off of the rail line, which means they are both connected via Catalyst.) Because Bezzerides murdered a security guard at the party, there is an all points bulletin out on her, and she is effectively neutralized: if she shows up, she will be arrested and taken to them. They have Velcoro in a spot too, because they framed him for the murder of Katherine Davis (Michael Hyatt aka Avon Barksdale’s sister).

I’m lost: who is Katherine Davis?

She is Bezzerides’ boss. She is the woman who got Bezzerides, Velcoro, and Woodrugh secretly back to investigating the Caspere case after the massacre in Vinci. She believed the Caspere case got closed only because Vinci paid off Attorney General and sex party attender Geldof, who in the wake of the Vinci massacre declared he was running for Governor and, not coincidentally, suddenly had an impressive war chest. Davis was not motivated by anything particularly nefarious, but she was more interested in interfering with Geldof’s rise than in cracking the entire Caspere-related conspiracy. None of that really matters now, however, because she is dead: she is the black woman Velcoro discovered shot in the driver’s seat of her own car. Velcoro assumes she was murdered by Burris and Holloway, and that they used one of the guns in his house to do it, in order to frame Velcoro.

OK—but, again, why did Burris kill Woodrugh?

Woodrugh was the only member of the trio who could move around freely, and thus the biggest threat to Holloway and Burris. At first, they just tried to blackmail him.
