RE: "Why Do You Lift?" - Getting Clear On Your Why
I workout because I want to be fit and look good in a tee shirt, not necessarily a beach body. I can't be fat and out of shape because I'm short and being short and fat sucks, thankfully I also have a full head of hair. Being short, fat and bald is like a trifecta of shittiness that would almost guarantee that I'd have to pay for sex with attractive women and that's not a situation I want to be in.

God damned them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold, we'd fire no guns-shed no tears, now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's privateers!

Confidence, health, keeping the body active, stress release. Keep muscles in top shape. Lots of reasons

I've been futzing around with my fitness goals recently, and I realized the reason I never quite seemed to hit them was I wasn't clear enough on the why.

Working out feels good. I am happier and feel better when I workout. But goals around "getting big" or under 10% body fat haven't clicked yet because I don't have a good enough why. I'm comfortable and able to get laid at my current state so why push it the lizard brain says. After all, I live in the 21st century, when this isn't a survival need.

I realize this applies to many goals, and areas where I'm trying to move from "good" to great. I'm curious what why others use for their lifting why, and how you shift your mind from "good enough" to pursuing excellence.

Not in any particular order:

- because I was an infantryman
- I like to choke out idiots
- I like to be able to defend myself against multiple attackers
- being fit increases survival after receiving severe wounds
- being fit reduces the negative effects of mental stress
- I am vein and I like to look good
- It makes getting laid much easier
- fat people are disgusting
- I like to set an example for my fellow man
- I want to be able to help others in the event of an emergency

I look around the gym at the undisciplined douchebag bros chatting with each other instead of lifting and become instantly motivated to push myself to the next level.

Pain is temporary, discipline is forever.

I started with wanting to look good. Then I wanted to get strong for ego reasons, then I wanted to get big for ego reasons. After that, I started loving being strong. Now I want to know if I'll also love being big. 2017, 100 kg if I can avoid becoming a fat fuck.

Speed is the lack of useless processes

RE: "Why Do You Lift?" - Getting Clear On Your Why
I lift because some friends of mine got me into it when I lived in London. I did it to have a better performance in basketball; posting up someone and moving them under the basket for a baby hook or a kiss of the glass is much easier than have to beat them with a face up move and I'm all about efficiency.

As a side note, I realised lizards also like a man with a strong athletic body. It was easier to close the deal, it's like a strong body runs direct game and even if you are meek or laidback, the lizard can start to undress herself just based on the power signals your body is sending.

Having a strong body can always offset the call of age. We will all get older eventually and no longer be the young cat in the club (or whatever venue one is at). Even if you have a face full of silver fur etc, 21 year old lizards will still go for a chiselled mountain just for the experience.

To conclude, a well built body can attract lizards who are into one night stands and definitely reduces the amount of verbal game you need to spit to close a deal. Of course, you have to wear clothes that complement that physique. If you go out draped in baggy hiphop wear, you could be built like Lou Ferrigno and no one will know.

RE: "Why Do You Lift?" - Getting Clear On Your Why
At first lifting for me was about eventually benching twice my body weight (as well as similar strength with leg extension, arm curls, calf raise etc.). A part of me still wants to still accomplish this feat. However, I care more about making progress and leaving it all in the weight room (being able to bench 5 more lbs every other month or so). I don't strive to be a muscle hamster like before.

I'm at a point now that if I don't leave it all in the weight their I have this unpleasant cloud of guilt over me until I get the chance to get in the weight room again. So its mostly mental for me.

When I put good work in the weight room, I tend to have a much better day (I'm a morning lifter)

A bit of a contrast of the Goal seeking attitude most lifters have

Growth Over Everything Else.

Self betterment is an essential element of manhood. Once we stop trying we start dying.

Started to look good for girls in high school. 14 years later it's essentially a habit like showering. It's something I enjoy doing and helps me relax from the everyday stresses of life.

Look better in clothes is the main reason

I don't care that much to be stronger. Not someone who gets in fights and my job involves holding a pen
