(03-18-2014 04:07 AM)Tenerife Wrote:  Chinese and Russian are my top two language priorities right now. With Chinese, you get access to the largest country in the world by population, a country where very few people speak english, but a country where you have a big exotic factor as a westerner.

After visiting the Dominican Republic and Colombia, my desire to learn Spanish has waned a bit. I'm still interested in hitting Mexico and Argentina though, but overall Latin America is taking a third position after Europe and Asia.

I really do have a big thing for asian girls and blonde girls, plus I enjoyed visiting those countries.

After Chinese, Japanese and maybe Thai would be the other two big ones for East Asia. Korea is getting a lot off negative buzz in terms of how it is to be a foreigner there dating women.

Fluency in Russian gives you access to half of the women of northern Europe, and they don't speak much English. Pretty much a no brainer there.

As for Europe, after Russian, maybe french, maybe German. French people speak less English, but overall I'm more attracted to paler skinned women, so perhaps German. I would potentially be interested in learning another slavic language after Russian, but a larger and larger percentage of these people are speaking English. Serbo-Croatian, Polish, and Czech are somewhat interesting to me.

Most important group 1. Chinese and Russian

Secondary importance 2. Japanese, Thai (or German).

It's funny looking back at this post a year and a half later.

My life priorities and view on the world has changed quite a bit.

As much as learning a language is cool, I don't know if I'll ever be fluent in another language. There are just so many other things I can do with my time: pursue my hobbies, hit the gym, get better at english and expand my vocabulary and learn more words, read great books, work on business and make more money, etc.

Learning a language really doesn't get you a whole lot if you think about it, unless you know for certain you're going to use it in the future. The first year or so is going to be learning to say and express what you already know in a different set of phonemes and symbols....it's extremely dry and it's only until you get to a higher level of conversational fluency that you can truly immerse into the new culture.

I spent a few months this year in Indonesia and learned a few hundred words, and it was worthwhile just because it made conversations more interesting and allowed me a bit more of a window into the culture.

But I have no reason to study it now that I'm not there. Same goes for my spanish, in which I have a low level of conversational fluency. It's nice to have for travel, but I don't see myself really becoming fluent.

I really liked Roosh's old post on "language hackers being full of shit", and how language marketers and the general geist of the times have gamified the concept of learning a new language, instead of truly seeing it as a means of communication.

I think when I wrote the above post I was in that mindset of "seeing languages as a game to hack".

I see German coming up quite a bit.
Would def recommend against it. Germans like speaking English far too much. Your German has to be extremely good for them to switch to it.
I'm fluent in German and they still don't wanna talk German to me.
I'd save my time for languages of counties where (most) of the locals and your target group mostly don't speak one of the languages you do

He knows.
Though I'd choose Spanish because it is more widely spoken on Latin America rather than French or Italian.

While I am shooting myself in the foot when attempting to game your usual Italian girls supposedly who are difficult enough although it's funny watching thirsty Italian dudes game really hard in broken English throughout European night game.

English
Russian
Mandarin
Spanish
Arabic

I feel as though speaking Arabic fluently would allow to travel around all of the Arab speaking countries with very little difficulty.
To me the game is simply not worth the candle, thus, I've opted to learn the latin languages and some basic Russian.

Nowadays, I'd be content speaking only English and Russian.

That's a good point you guys make and it has made me change my opinion on this question. There is a certain on-going "sunk cost" required in not only learning a language but also maintaining competency in that language. And this sunk cost is much easier to pay if one is actually using these languages on a regular basis, otherwise it's "use it or lose it"

In hindsight, almost three years later if I was to answer this question again then I'd be super content to be fluent in only the following three languages:
- English
- Spanish
- Russian

RE: If you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?
1. English - worldwide not speaking English in 25 years will be the equivalent of not being able to read and write.

2. Spanish - opens up South America, central America, huge chunk of the Caribbean and the SE US. Would make it easy to study Portuguese and other Romance languages.

3. Russian - opens up the entire eastern block.

3. Arabic - opens up the entire middle east along with non-arabic but Islamic countries.

4. Mandarin - for business purposes.

5. Hindi - opens up the Indian subcontinent. Urdu and Begali aint much different.

With these languages you get the entire Western hemisphere, China, the ME and North Africa, the eastern block, the subcontinent, Oecenia and most of Africa.

I left out French because it's an overrated dying language which outside of West Africa and France doesn't offer shit.

I'm fluent in English and Spanish, conversational in Mandarin, have forgotten most of my German but could learn it again pretty quickly.

Russian would be interesting, but I'm currently more into Latin.

RE: If you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?
1. English (native) - for obvious reasons

2. Russian - I feel like many EE and Central European languages are rooted from Russian. Hence, learning Russian may help you in understanding the logic, the alphabet, some phrases and fundamentals, and the pronouncians of other EE languages if I ever choose to learn them. I personally am not a fan of Russian women and culture, but learning Russian will help me build the roots to learning other EE and Central European languages if I ever choose to learn them and settle down in one of those countries

3. Mandarin - Strictly for business. Not into the culture or the women, but China will one day surpass the USA and be a world superpower and I want to have the proper means to be able to communicate with them to leg up

4. French - Used in half of Africa, France, Canada. Its useful.

5. Arabic - For business purposes. The Arab world is rising and would be useful to communicate with them

RE: If you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?
1. English - lingua franca in modern world. I don't like this language too much but there is on denying it is the most useful. Opens up more of the world then anything else, also most software is in English and you must deal with them computers in modern times.

2. Russian - Opens up huge geographic area for travel, not just Russia but also large parts of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Also gives completely another perspective on the world opposite to that of the west. With knowing both English and Russian you can compare and decide for yourself. Russian is among the oldest of the indo-european languages (there are a few older, like Latvian and Lithuanian but they are not wide spread) and you can get the concepts of Proto-Indoeuropean Pagan spirituality trough it. English is spiritually dead nearly dead - a perfect language for atheists and feminists. Russian is spiritually very vivid especially if you are fluent enough to understand old words and dialects that precede Pushkin era language reforms. There are spiritual concepts one can say in Russian that are impossible to say in English.

3. Spanish - Opens up huge and exotic geographic area for travel.

4. Hebrew - gives you ability to pass for a Jew or at least a friend of Jews that can be useful for connections if you are that mercantile. Can give you understanding about what is actually written in Bible so you always come above in these debates and you are not dependent on the translators with an agenda.

5. It's getting hard to choose the last one. I would probably go with Portuguese to unlock all of South America

Languages which I think are overrated:

French - It is dying. Arabs and Africans are overpopulating France. I don't think anyone cares to learn it to communicate in Africa. Quebecois are just larping pricks and you should do well with English in most of Canada, even if you get some shunning from Quebecois, it's not worth it, just shun them back. With neither France or Canada respecting themselves as nations I don't see a reason to respect their language and learn it anymore. With France and Canada abandoning French the former African colonies will either revert back to their tribal languages or become more English speaking as well.
Any Chinese language like Mandarin or Cantonese - I don't believe China will be next superpower. It's a paper dragon. It's communist, corrupt and people are too docile and too mercantile for their own good.
Arabic - People believe with spread of Islam this will be become important. Better just do your best so that it never comes true. There is nothing interesting ever written in Arabic, Quran is a boring and dull book.
Hindu - unlike many people think it doesn't open up all of India. India is far too diverse. Best language to communicate with everyone in India is English. if you want some Indian spirituality then learn Sanskrit directly.

All of these overrated languages are still worth to be in top 20 of worlds languages, but not in top 5.

I wouldn't want to speak 5 languages fluently, I'd be quite content with the following 3: British English, French and Russian. No others give me the reach and breadth for what I need and do, Arabic is tempting but has no real value as everyone speaks English in key settings.

Normally I support calling out people who consistently make low quality posts, but this seems a bit harsh. I don't believe Off The Reservation belongs to that camp and you generally see it with guys with over a thousand posts but low rep counts (i.e. Pride Male).

This is meant to be a fun thread, as a thought exercise, and to learn more about forum interests. Lots of other guys haven't given full explanatations.

That said, now I'm curious too.

Russian-Norwegian-Polish-Czech-Serbian.I am aware except Russian those are regiıonal languages with relatively small populations and without global impact,but these nations have the hottest women on our blue planet(I only date white women,no racism intended,just personal taste).If you speak Norwegian you are likely to understand Swedish and Danish as well,which is the nest of gorgeous blondes.I do not care about feminism as long as the ladies are that hot , it is suddenly tolerable.That being said,i would trade the other 4 languages with the ability to speak only Russian like it is my mother tongue. The world would be such a paradise then.

RE:you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?
I'm not sure how much language maintenance has been discussed in previous pages of this thread but it's very important. I spend a few months in Colombia each winter and while I'm back home working, I try to hang out with as many Spanish speakers as possible, I always get rusty and it takes me a couple of weeks to get back into it when I return. I listen to Spanish music and chat with chicas everyday but should really do more grammar exercises to keep it up.

I'm pretty bummed out over my French though, I was very fluent, near native levels and people in Quebec would mistake me for a Francophone sometimes and would be surprised to learn that I was an Anglo Canadian. Then I moved out west and stopped speaking it and am really rusty although I can still have a conversation no problem, joke around, etc I just forget the complex grammar rules like plus que parfait.

Fluency in "only" five languages would be a very difficult thing to achieve and maintain, especially if they're obscure ones that you don't have exposure to everyday. I'm happy with three and they're easy ones, I couldn't imagine learning Arabic, Chinese or Russian.

God damned them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold, we'd fire no guns-shed no tears, now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's privateers!

Thai - Because my wife is Thai and it would make talking to the older in-laws a little easier. Younger people in Thailand in the better schools are required to take English.
Latin - Just because I am into classical history and it would nice to be able to read the original manuscripts without the bias of translation.
Greek - Classical history again.
German - I was told by a sales guy from Europe that if you speak either German or French, you can pretty much communicate with most of Western Europe. German sound better to my ears than French.

I wrote out my list and then thought about how much I'd actually use the languages such as Russian.

If it was based on usefulness in Canada it would look something like this.

English
Mandarin
Korean
Punjabi
French

I am not sure.The general notion is that colonized countries understand the colonizer's language easier.Due to military,political and economic influence.Sweden was the big brother of Scandinavia throughout the history , so my guess is Norwegians and Danes have better understanding of Swedish than the other way around.Even in Fİnland Swedish is the highest learned 2nd language after English.But if there is a Scandinavian guy reading this post he can confirm or correct my point.Another reason i listed Norwegian is that i think Norwegian women are slightly prettier than Swedish and Danish.Norway has the highest gdp per capita among those ,even if you are a non qualified worker , let's say a waiter or bartender in Norway , with the money you save you can go for vacations or even for living to anywhere you want in the world.

Tough one but I think...

* English
* Spanish
* French
* Mandarin
* Hindi

* German (if there was a #6)
* Japanese (if there was a #7)
* Korean (if there was a #8)

I'd want to be an international commerce king.

1. English
2. Portuguese (if youre fluent in Portuguese, then it's a piece of cake to speak Spanish )
3. Mandarin for the exotic factor and business value
4. Russian just for the sluts and surrounding FSU countries
5. French (could be of great value in some parts of Africa)

My reasons are based on possible value of bizness and pussy, off course there are other languages that could be worthy. I think my selection is pretty solid, and personally don't think one could disagree with the exception of French or Portuguese
P.S.: On a second thought might actually replace French with German just for the super geil

RE: If you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?
I already speak 3 languages fluently: arabic, english and french. I understand spanish but can’t talk/write in it. Also a bit of italian to get by.

Here are other languages I’d like to learn

- dutch - german: very close to english. Interesting country.

- mandarin: because china

For everyone/country else they should learn english or one of the languages mentioned above. You can’t please every country

I think mastering 5 languages is very feasible. I think for me it is feasible to have 4 mastered and 7-8 lang to get by.
