I speak Spanish to near native fluent levels but would gladly drop it like a hot potato.

Why would you pick Africaans and why would you consider it better then Spanish?

A post with bold statements but no explanation is a low value post. Don't make such any more please.

Normally I support calling out people who consistently make low quality posts, but this seems a bit harsh. I don't believe Off The Reservation belongs to that camp and you generally see it with guys with over a thousand posts but low rep counts (i.e. Pride Male).

This is meant to be a fun thread, as a thought exercise, and to learn more about forum interests. Lots of other guys haven't given full explanatations.

That said, now I'm curious too.

Since the question was what would I choose I don't have to have a compelling argument or convincing reason except to myself. My bold statement wasn't meant to convince anyone else. I've been to every Latin American country on earth and am totally bored with them. I would say "every Spanish speaking country" but I am missing Equatorial Guinea in Africa which is technically a Spanish speaking country. With this again it's what I would choose, not something I would try to tell someone else to think.

English is indispensable, Afrikaans is a personal interest, I love French people, for Russian and Arabic I would like to be able to talk to those people in their own language. Korean is my runner up, although it's no more interesting than Japanese, however I lived in Japan in the past as a sales trainer for a manufacturer, and Japanese is been there done that.

RE: If you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?
English - most important language by far, very happy I got this for free from birth
Thai - I live in Thailand, this is more useful than English here. Already pretty close to fluent
Russian - Opens up a tonne of countries for travel + girls
Mandarin - for business + just how common this is everywhere
tie: Japanese/French - I just like how both of these sound.. I feel like they'd probably lose their charm once I was fluent in them, though.

Spanish which is mentioned a bunch doesn't really appeal to me. I don't intend to spend much time in south america or spain

RE: If you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?
Let's say someone could speak 4+ important languages (100million+ speakers). Not necessarily at the level where they could do professional translation (since that involves skills outside of just language ability), but at least enough to conduct business, have full conversations on a variety of topics, and understand movies/tv shows without subtitles.

Are there any jobs out there that such a person would be uniquely qualified to do, or will his languages only be useful when speaking with someone who speaks those languages and not English?

RE: If you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?
1. English
2. Spanish (could prob understand most of the ones from same language tree like French and Portuguese)
3. Hindi (I would say top tier Bollywood movies > Hollywood, and they produce more, can also understand a lot of the dialects too)
4. Mandarin (Same with understanding Chinese dialects)
5. Undecided - but leaning towards Russian because quality of women

Russian

English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Russian have large numbers of speakers. I put Japanese because I like the girls particularly. Portuguese would be great, but you could probably get to a basic level quite easily with fluency in Spanish.

Already fluent in English and German.

Russian sounds interesting though. Mostly for the access to EE.

English
Serbo-Croatian (working on it because I like the Balkans)
Russian (for FSU/ Russia and gaming women, also because of it's utility)
Japanese (cool culture)
French (just because girls like it, and I like French Culture/ food).

Spanish is also cool, but I've never been too interested in Latin America. Know a bit already.

Spanish
French
Mandarin
Japanese
Russian

With this combination you should be fine almost everywhere, even in the US. So English can be skipped.

So a polyglot international man of mystery who doesn't speak the number one international language of the world, gets around in the US by seeking out Spanish and Chinese speakers, and stumbles around Europe without even German? That's hilarious. Strongly suggest your hypothetical innovative Casanova sacrifice French or Japanese for English.

RE: If you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?
Interesting thread.

As a general rule, aside from English I'd go with 2-3 major world languages and 1-2 niche languages that can help you stand out from the crowd and get ahead in specific countries/regions of interest. For the latter, I'd focus on lack of English penetration in that country in addition to other factors such as the quality of women, business opportunities, and your personal level of interest in the country/region and its culture. Beyond that, it's really just personal preference.

Personally, I'd go with Mandarin (already conversational in it), Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Thai. I am mostly attracted to Latin and Asian women, and all four of those languages can be useful in business. Between those languages in English I can go anywhere in the Americas (except Haiti I guess, what a loss) or western/central Europe, greater China, much of southeast Asia, and much of Africa; and maybe with some difficulty in the other parts of Europe and southeast Asia along with India.

My five
I want to be a language wizard not a language warrior.
so I'll pick 5 languages that give me the best foundation to learn others.

Japanese
French
Cantonese
Russian.
German

English is basically a mismash of French and German, and there are a tonne of resources for learning it. My motivation to learn would be skyhigh.

French gives me access to much of Africa, as well as being similar enough grammatically to help me learn Spanish. As a weird bonus, lots of non-European girls find French a turn-on.

Cantonese? Well, it is a lot harder to learn to speak it than Mandarin, and formal written "Cantonese" is near-identical to "Mandarin", so it'll be useful from the get go. I find the typical Cantonese 本地 look very cute, and it's more impressive if you speak a language not spoken by many outsiders, not a bad thing when it is the insider language of some of the richest communities in SE Asia. Obviously I'll be studying Mandarin after mastering English.

Japanese? It's a breath of sanity in this crazy globalised world. It also makes learning Korean far easier.

Russian? One of the hardest languages in the world, but opens a lot of doors not reached by other languages. It's a good foundation for Serbo-Croatian if I get round to it.

German is my final choice. I was tempted to pick Urdu instead, as it would have been a good bridge between Hindi and Farsi, but I'm a coward and want at least one safe bet where I wouldn't ethnically stand out. That, and it makes English far easier.

English (Mother Tongue)
Spanish - Got an intermediate level
Russian - for the women
Japaneese - for the women
Latin/Ancient Greek - would be a true sign of education, plus I could decode old manuscripts and shit to get the real answers.

RE: If you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?
For me it would be (in no particular order):
-English (my native tongue)
-Russian
-Spanish
-French
-Arabic

If I could choose a 6th language it would be Portuguese but I omitted it because if you are fluent in Spanish you can probably survive in Portuguese speaking countries with a mix of English and "Portunol" as they call it.

English needs no explanation. The other languages I picked because of the number of countries you get access to.

Russian if you include countries where its a common second language gives you access to Russia and a large chunk of the former soviet union countries.

Spanish gives you access to most of Latin America as well as Spain and is a widely spoken second language across the world.

French gives you access to France, parts of Switzerland, Belgium, Luxemburg, some small island nations and a huge chunk of Africa.

Arabic gives you access to a huge chunk of the middle east as well as parts of north Africa.

With the 5 languages on my list if you include countries where its a commonly spoken second language you got nearly half the countries of the world covered (perhaps a slight exaggeration).

RE: If you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?
1. English
2. Spanish ( Colombia, Mexico, Argentine,..)
3. Mandarin ( For business opportunities and gaming in China and Taiwan)
4. Portuguese ( Really underrated IMO, for gaming and business oppurtunities in Brazil and other hidden countries like Angola and Mozambique)
5. Russian ( This one would be my top choice for wifehunting, for in 10 years: Ukraine, Kazakhstan,Russia,..)

I am surprised that Portuguese has not been chosen more often, it's a great language for business and it opens the doors ( business wise and game wise) for the sexy girls from Brazil and it opens the door for hidden gems like Angola and Mozambique, which I met a few girls from and they were decent looking.

RE: If you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?
1. [English] Like many others have said, I am grateful I was born with this one. You are able to use it for anywhere in the US, UK, and Australia. Also, every country uses as the languauge for students to learn and every country you visit you can find at least one person who speaks it. Like mandarin, it opens up so many business opportunities.

2. [Mandarin] Strictly for business and the amount of people that use it, imo.

3. [Spanish] Many countries speak a similar version of it, fairly easy once you learn the basics.

4. [Russian] Not as many people speak as the first three but still many countries use it as their second language and it helps for speak to slavic women.

5. [Phil, Thai, Viet] It's a tossup between these for me as they are not as important for the weight they hold but I'm sure if you found a partner in these countries, they could easily teach you the language. It would be helpful for living in the country full-time.

English
French (native)
Spanish (not so hard to learn as french native and also very useful)
Russian (hard to learn but so rewarding and giving access to almost every place i like in the world)
For the 5th one I would go for something rare to stand out completely , something i would know fluently and i would be only the only foreigner to speak it so absolutely every woman would find me interesting. Possibly Icelandic or Kyrgyz.
