Things that are repeated so much - they're not even up for debate
Or debated so slightly, it's irrelevant. Basically an idea that is taken as gospel, even bringing it up it could be incorrect ends up being controversial.

*Not looking for a debate of the topics, thought such a list would be interesting.

I'll start.

"During war (assuming full-scale war), the economy goes up"

"The US legal system may not be perfect, but it's the best in the world"

Everything is up for debate.

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe.
To be your own man is a hard business. If you try it, you'll be lonely often, and sometimes
frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." - Kipling

Who believes this other than Americans?

Sadly, many people in eastern europe do beleive that grass is greener on the other side of the former iron curtain and especially USA.

They think that since western and especially USA economy is better it must be because west has better laws. They fail to realize that western economy is world's best only due to military power and victories in WW2 and Cold war.

But I would be literally scard to go to USA. It seems to me people there can be sued for literally everything and the sentences are absurdly harsh.

In America, that mantra is especially brought up during any legal TV show whenever a controversial defendant (Simpson, Zimmerman) was found not guilty.

An unpopular verdict is generally used to reinforce that belief.

In my part of the world, the following:

Person 1: "How's it going?"

Person 2: "Oh, busy, really busy."

Person 1: "Well, busy's good, it beats the opposite."

Person 2: "You've got that right."

I've been Persons 1 and 2 in this conversation. I know it's a lie, but I participate...

Belief in the just world, best described in the just-world hypothesis. The feeling that things happen for a reason... actually, no they don't. The world is just a random and chaotic place a lot of times and much of our interaction is governed by base human desires and emotions with an underlying illusion of civility.

Boy oh boy, I like this thread! Lets see:

1. If you oppose gay marriage, you hate gays.
2. If you oppose any feminist claim, you hate women.
3. Democracy is the best political system in the world.
4. War is only justifiable if it is for the good of the invaded people.
5. Your parents know what is best for you, so long as they are married and never abused you.

Inflation is good, deflation is bad.

Real estate price appreciation is good, yet somehow rent control is also good.

Currency depreciation over time is good, so is the economic system based accumulating massive debt and inflating it away.

Democracy is the best form of government. inflation is good. diversity is our strength. anyone to the right of Bill Clinton is an evil racist Republican. college is necessary. we are all equal. war is good for the economy. government spending of any kind is good for the economy. climate change is 110% real, anyone who disagrees at all is a flat earther.

Exercise = weight loss.

Not true. Not eating = weight loss. All these "it's go time!" plans make you exhausted and hungry and are mostly money-making schemes. I know so many women on this exercise treadmill. Insane workouts with trainers, followed by massive hunger, then they have to eat more, so then they have to return to the trainer the next day. It's a racket.

While you need exercise to keep toned (and I am definitely not one to shirk exercise), less food is the ticket to weight loss.

One of many sources.

Social media are the nouveau opiate of the masses.

I disagree because I think that much of our hesitation with social media is a result only of our nascent and, thus, flawed understanding of the concept.

Social media, like books or tv, can effect both positives and negatives.

Repressed students in Iran spread discontent with Twitter. As did Miley Cyrus with her inane tweets.

One day we will have a better idea of how to make social media work for our betterment.
Or not. Who knows.

^^ Poor people can be fucking miserable. But it's usually those who have survived material hardship who have the greatest capacity for long-term happiness.

You need both - to have enough money for a good life, after knowing the anguish of poverty.
