Yeah, it's like a buffet. You may like chicken and beef with equal measure, but when the buffet stops serving chicken, you double down on beef to fill up.

Like you said, as men have fewer and fewer acceptable outlets for showing society they are a man, they double down on those remaining. Thus, guys become even more focused on money, because "a man is supposed to be the breadwinner." Not that I'd want my wife to work, but the average man feels threatened by a woman richer than him, because that's all he has left to show he's a man.

It's really an attack on masculine expression. Just have them get jacked but no presence like the guys used to have.

The old school guys with personality would be considered "creepy" by today's standards.

RE: Men's Journal: Hollywood's leading men are getting more jacked today
A major factor driving the emphasis on looks over acting abilities and charisma is Hollywood's search for the next big franchise that plays well worldwide.

From The NY Times:

Quote:The six major studios are releasing about 30 percent fewer movies than they did seven years ago, and they have largely narrowed their focus to expensive concept projects or franchises based on existing intellectual property — comic books, young-adult novels, older movies — that can be rebooted and sold to passionate pre-existing audiences around the world. Because the American movie market now makes up less than a third of global box-office receipts, studios tend to favor projects featuring explosions, car chases and doomsday scenarios — a universal language of violence that translates easily in China, India, Brazil and Europe. Almost without exception, the movies star some beefcake with pecs that make Ben-Hur’s seem puny. In the last three years, the top-grossing movies have included Marvel’s “The Avengers”; “The Hunger Games” and its sequel; “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”; “Thor”; and even “Fast & Furious 6.” What used to be summer blockbusters are now anchoring box offices year round.

As Hollywood makes fewer movies, it increasingly cannot afford a big loss. To hedge against the possibility of a dud, it picks comics and novels with large fan bases, even though these can flop too. The big draw is the intellectual property, not the actor. Therefore, we see replaceable actors with impeccable physiques in comic book movies and reboots.

To provide some numbers, the latest Transformers movie, which has received unanimously negative reviews, is about to make $1 billion in global box office. Captain Phillips, which earned rave reviews, made about 20% of that worldwide. Tom Hanks carried Captain Phillips, while computer-generated robots that turn into cars (and not Mark Wahlberg) carry Transformers: Age of Extinction.

I think it's reflective of our culture.

Today's actors are far more emotive and demonstrative than they used to be. Back in the day, those actors (McQueen, Eastwood, Newman) were far more subtle.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing in the sense that IMO actors like DiCaprio are really good. Likewise, I used to think Tom Cruise was a spastic overactor, but I think he's gotten a lot better and a lot of that is because he projects more through what he doesn't say as opposed to flailing around and yelling. I do think Gosling is a good actor (albeit overrated) but even though he's more subtle, it has to do more with a sadness he can project rather than a manliness or stoicism that old school actors can project.

IMO there is too much encouragement in our society for everyone to express their feelings. I think it is primarily a feminine trait and while it is certainly useful from time to time, for men and women, I do not think it is every time. I was at a party the other night and it always astonishes me how people don't stop talking, without anyone really listening to each other.

I've been asked why I'm so quiet sometimes. I have a naturally reserved personality, but shit, sometimes I just don't have anything to say. And it's not about holding in feelings, rather it's talking a deep breath and prioritizing ones thoughts and feelings, not everything needs to be shared.

Plus I'd love to be able to project a toughness that someone like Sam Elliot can do by just raising an eyebrow.

Yep.

The other day I turned on the TV to watch the Commonwealth Games. While browsing through the channels to avoid ads, I came across all these "reality" shows: singing, cooking, dancing, home renovating, you name it. Every contestant and audience member were vomiting their feeeeeelings everywhere on screen (mostly women, of course, but the few males there are also equally soft). And they're the majority paying the big bucks for entertainment.

No wonder actors have to be so in order to appeal to them.

Honestly Mike, your articles are among the few things that I still take seriously online. I don't know why everybody can't just be as real as you about important social issues. If RVF wasn't already my homepage you'd be there for sure.

Ha Hans, MikeCF explained that one - if you upset your betters by speaking the truth, they won't give you access to titillating press releases that you turn around into articles.

Plus, when you do speak the truth, they try to prevent you from getting published again a la George Will and his sexual assault editorial.

Glenn Greenwald's outfit looks to be an exception perhaps.

Hey, strikeback.

How popular are the commonwealth games in your country?

Somewhat popular, mostly sold to the general public as an occasion to stick it to the UK or beat New Zealand. The coverage is woeful though, we have a billion digital channels but only have one channel covering the lot. If you ask the average joe, he'll know that the Games are on, but wouldnt have a clue how Australia is doing in details except a couple of scandals or dramas. Athletics and the Games are way more popular in Europe judging by how many go to the stadiums to watch vs when we hosted the Games back in 2006.
