RE: 80s thread, best of the 80s
I guess top is more of a 90s band, with the baggy shirts, curtain hairdo and the return of guitars over synths.

The 80s kind of started around 1977-78 and ended about 10 years later after bands like the Cult and Metallica reestablished a guitar-driven sound and synths were no longer a novelty.

The 70s were a time of incredible change in musical styles and youth aesthetic, they started out with the peak hippie look, cycled through prog, disco, punk then post-punk and new wave.

It was basically a time when X-Gen kids rejected the hippie ethos of their parents' generation, cleaning up, cutting their hair and wearing sharp suits and ties, dumping folkish unplugged tunes for a synthetic beat-driven musical leap forward.

Some of the best 80s music was from the late 70s:

awesome classic synth riff:

amazing buildup in intro:

great instrumental by one of the best Scottish bands of all time:

nice combination of raw energy with synth riff:

and finish this with quality synthless British post-punk:

Speaking of Cyndi Lauper...

Just how did Madonna become the female artist of the 80's?
I don't remember seeing her in "We Are The World"...

Oh well, there were plenty of charity songs to go around back in the 80's...

PT that was a decent film but didn't live up to the hype.

A similar film which is better I'm home is Body Heat. Very red pill too. Cameos by Ted Danson and Mickey Rourke.

These guys where good, despite being Americans they only made it in Europe, this song was a huge hit around here.

I also share here possibly my favorite pop/rock song of the 80s, Tears for Fears, what a hell of a band.

Hey, remember when Mick Jagger tried a solo/acting career?

^apparently these somehow tie into a movie called "Running Out Of Luck". Never seen it.

RE: 80s thread, best of the 80s
One of the things I miss about music from that era was playfulness. Neneh Cherry was a good example, with lyrics like:

"Wearing padded bras,

Drinking beer through straws

Droppin' down their drawers

Where did you get yours?"

Also, that early rap, like Young MC or even earlier Sugarhill Gang retained some of the fun and silliness that was a big part of 70's funk.

"Looking for love in all the wrong places

No fine girls just ugly faces."

and

"He can't satisfy you with his little worm

But I can bust you out with my super sperm."

Morris Day and the Time also, are a good example of the light, playful approach to music. All you had to do was look at him to know he was going to have a good time:

It was a much more innocent time, and it is understandable that some of the fun lightness has been lost today.

Still, it is fun to remember these songs and singers. People were less self conscious and image driven. You could just go out on the dance floor and be a nut, and it was fine. But then, you didn't have Youtube where you saw all the amazing Dubsteppers doing their thing and making you feel lame.

Cameo was great too. Like cartoon characters.

Here's something else weird about the 80's. Out of the blue, and for no reason at all, it produced a stable of female singers who were classy as hell and sang like throwbacks to the torch singers of the 30's and 40's.

Remember these girls? Brenda Russell was sultry and grown up. Basia was brassy and jazzy. And what about Anita Baker? She was the queen of the 80's. A real artist.

Oh yeah Body Heat...I remember choking my chicken to Kathleen Turner in that movie as kid. Rented it from Blockbuster for the purpose

I agree Body Double wasn't great but it was shot (and edited) in a uniquely De Palma style that was interesting

Speaking of De Palma he soon after directed one of the best Vietnam war movies ever

The rape scene is hard to watch* but the movie is excellent.

*(Should be required viewing on college campuses so they know what "rape culture" really looks like)
