So I'm pretty much set on returning to jakarta with the hope of longterm expatriation. I can't wait to hit the ground there again I'm already pipelining and plotting my networking attack to find work and beat the strict indo visa rules.

Absolutely incorrect. Most people (yes 'party hos' included) are working pretty heavily before lebaran (at the end of ramadan) as it is (a) the busiest time of year for lots of businesses (b) the time of year when bonuses are given © they are saving to 'pulang kampung' ie. go back to their hometown where they will likely use any annual leave that would otherwise been used on a bali trip on a few extra days in their hometown either before or after lebaran.

so no, irish is either making stuff up, or taking a very small sample size of unemployed girls.

RE: Jakarta Datasheet (by Irish)
In this recent article, the author says that in Jakarta:

Quote:A nice four-bedroom family home in a gated community could be rented for about $500 USD per month, and a studio apartment like the one I currently live in with a pool and a gym costs roughly $250-$300 per month.

Is that true though? I know that, for example, in Thamrin city you can get a 1br for around 700/month. Close to Grand Indo, swimming pool, gym, etc, but not the best building, kind of old. In newer buildings, the rent could be $1000/month or more. $250-300 is the price range for a small apartment in a smaller building w/o a swimming pool as far as I know, somewhere like Kemang, but not within walking distance to bars and clubs. Am I missing something? Out of interest, I looked for apartments in Jakarta online and was surprised how expensive they were.

There's actually quite a bit of demand for expat housing in Jakarta at the moment, and everyone is overpaying.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the housing market when it opens up to foreign owners.

Kemang is a lot more expensive than Thamrin Residences if we're talking expat housing. A lot more of the middle-class expats live in Thamrin Residences, like the teachers/engineers/etc.

I don't know too much about the housing market in Jakarta but I suspect given the horrendus traffic that prices will vary considerably based on location. As being even a short distance from the centre or wherever you need to be can mean hours of additional commuting time.

Looks like from April, 30 more countries can enter Indonesia visa-free through 5 different airports. UK, USA, Canada, Japan, various European countries and some others. If nothing else it saves some money on the visa-on-arrival.

Do you know that as a fact or is it just a rumour? you got the source?
that would be good news.

Fact

http://www.opp.today/indonesia-visa-free...ty-demand/

Quote:The nations receiving visa-free entry for up to 30 days by the government, in the move which is planned to begin from April 2015...

The 30 countries that are joining this list as from next month are China, South Korea, Japan, the United States, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, Oman, Bahrain and South Africa.

Good news...unless you're Australian

Quote:One notable exception is Australian citizens, who made up one in eight of visitors in 2014, but will have to continue to pay US$35 for their visas. Relations between the two countries have been strained over the pending execution of two Australians accused of drug trafficking in Bali, although the Indonesian government denies the case has affected itsvisa decision.

RE: Jakarta Datasheet (by Irish)
Spent a couple of days over on Jakarta in a very last minute trip (booked the day before) as one of my girls had a comped table at Immigrant for her birthday paid for by her boyfriend/sponsor and wanted me to go. So would've been rude not to...

Anyway intel update that the Dragonfly crowd seems to be going to both Immigrant (as expected) but also Blowfish too. Probably due to it's proximity, but a lot of the regular nights/events in Dragonfly have moved to Blowfish for the time being. I never made it there tho as I had a free night in Immigrant both the Friday and Saturday, but it would've been interesting to check out. DF expected to re-open post Ramadan (mid-July).

I will likely head back over again for a (long) weekend in a few weeks and Blowfish will be on the agenda then. Only done the place once and didn't really like it as appeared to be a lot of young chinese. But now should be a blend of the DF crowd going as well so good excuse to give it another whirl.

I might add as well the talent in Immigrant was pretty average by Jakarta's standards, particularly on Saturday. Tho I did manage to pick up a hottie (tho no SNL, banged her later that week). But that was a bit of a fluke, as apart from a few real tidy girls the talent was actually fairly disappointing I thought. Friday was a lot better and had a cracking time, but it still wasn't up to Dragonfly' standards.

Was in illegals briefly on Saturday and again it wasn't that busy so may not be that great an 'afterparty' option afterall. Certainly a nicer (and less dodgy feeling) club than Miles but seems not to be getting a crowd, on a Saturday anyway. The one Friday I was there before it was a lot busier.

Finally, given I was rolling solo this time I stayed in a budget hotel as opposed to an airbnb. Stayed at the All Seasons Hotel, Thamrin which was picked more or less at random as it was fairly cheap and 5 minute walk from Plaza Indoneseia. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this cracking little budget business hotel. Great rooms, staff that weren't retarded, solid consistently working wifi, small (tho very basic) gym which I had all to myself, the full room service menu was 24 hour, and in particular a surprisingly great rooftop bar which is ideal for bouncing chicks back to for a drink. Recommended.

I have noticed it being quiet around 3 when I have rolled in recently, but wasn't sure if it was due to the majority of people heading to the private rooms. You missed out that a Stadium re-opening after Ramadan could be in the works. ☺

I have been hearing for quite a while from a few sources that Stadium was going to re-open. Tho nobody knew exactly when or if the info was definitely 100% true.

Is this definitely happening after Ramadan then?

Definite may be too strong a word, but it is highly possible but with rebranding. My friend who has the logo tattooed on him isn't so keen on the rebranding!

I am convinced that you can't officially call yourself a 'nightclub' in Jakarta until you get shut down by the police at some point...

I spent a week there and I thought it was excellent.

Instead of meeting chicks in Plaza Indonesia I just had them meet there, and I'd say "I've wanted to check it out since I heard it's the best rooftop bar in the city." Pulling back to the room didn't get any easier than that.

The included breakfast is really good too.

Damn it, I just found about this more up to date thread. So when is the best time to go? I planned to go but don't want to visit when everyone is out of town or something like that.
