I used to drink 5 drinks a night back when I was unmotivated and uninspired.

Now I barely drink one or two a week. Times have changed.

According to the graph, 60% of people drink less than one drink a week. Where are these people?

Am I right in reading that 10 percent of American adults (18+) drink what amounts to 2 full bottles of hard liquor a week?

I'd buy 5 percent, easily. 10 percent, I'm not sure if I'm buying that argument. Wouldn't that show up in the liver failure statistics?

Former booze bag here.

One of my first attempts at getting my act together involved tracking drink units, as described in the study. At my worst, I was averaging just under 90 units of alcohol a week. Drinking that much was literally like a second full time job - it required a twisted degree of dedication. It's very hard to believe that 10% of the population is drinking at slightly lower levels than I was at my absolute shittiest.

Finally some stats that make sense.

I'm actually encouraged that a full 30% of the population doesn't drink at all, though.

Likewise, I call BS on Depardieu drinking 12+ bottles per day. If those bottles are 750ml, that's at least 9 litres of fluids per day. You'd spend all day pissing. You'd have to be drinking and pissing at the same time in order to get through it all.

That's sad...or you're way underestimating how much you drink when you drink light beer partying in college.

I'd say on lighter weekends I'm a near guarantee for 20 on Fri-Sat easy, let's say 25. Sunday I usually do funday, so another 5-10. During the week I'd say maybe 10-20 (depending on Monday Night Football watch, post gym beers, Thursday boozin).

I'm probably running 35-50 per week. I've done 70 many times, but that wouldn't be average I don't think. Tough to drink that much good beer.

Actually, university students don't drink light beer in Australia. Anyway, I'm not going to get into a pissing contest with you about how much I could or couldn't drink back in the day. Binges don't equate to a steady average of 70 drinks per week, week in, week out. I'm talking about long term averages. If you are really drinking that many drinks every week, then I would caution you to reassess that because even if you think you're indestructible in your late teens/early twenties, you're going to pay a big price for such heavy drinking in your thirties or forties, let alone later. I'm not just talking about the physiological effects; your productivity is going to be greatly impeded. There are plenty of old alcoholics floating around the EFL circuit in Asia and there's no such thing as a functioning alcoholic. I've worked and lived with them and they struggle.

Anyway, what is sad is that I drank as much as I did, and that so many people do drink that much or more. What's even sadder is that excessive alcohol consumption is so glorified in many Western countries. It's so unproductive, if not downright counterproductive. It's expensive, unhealthy, and it's anti-social in the true sense of the crime, destruction and injury it causes. Even the supposed social benefits of its consumption are wildly overstated. As a sober person, have you ever tried conversing with really drunk people? It's retarded.

Alcohol is the only drug that is so widely glorified in society (though marijuana is getting there, too), despite its out-sized negative effects.

I've been sober over a year now.

At my absolute worst i was doing about 100 easily. Had me fucked up physically and mentally and i knew it except i was too stubborn to go to a doctor about it since i thought it would expose weakness at my job and i would be prey to my coworkers. When i finally decided to quit it took a solid month just to taper down followed by three months of withdrawal. The first month in particular was absolute pure misery.

These statistics have got to be bogus. They're basically saying that maybe only somewhere between 10-20% of all adults drink at all without being alcoholics and about two thirds of all adults never drink.

Look at the source from the original post: "Paying the Tab" by Philip J. Cook. Here's its Amazon page: http://www.amazon.com/Paying-Tab-Benefit...0691125201

The author seems to have some kind of temperance agenda, I guess he's trying to overstate the case that the majority of Americans don't drink and all, and the ones that do cause significant problems. There's no way in hell people who have somewhere between 2.5 and 73 drinks in a week make up something like 15% of the population.

In many weeks I do not drink at all. I know plenty of people like this as well.

I have no problem with drinking, basically I just see it as a luxury expense I do not need, but I enjoy it.

Most people I know do ot drink with meals. They usually just drink when going out to get drunk. And if you do not go out every weekend, there you go.

I think I might have solved the puzzle about the way they collect data to make these numbers seem bizarre:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/25...56004.html

Quote:"And in fact, most adults don't drink at all on any given day," said lead author Patricia Guenther, a nutritionist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion.

"But the fact remains that it is a significant public health problem that many people do drink to excess."

Guenther said that members of the committee that drafted the current USDA guidelines on alcohol consumption wanted to know how many adults exceeded the limits.

She and her colleagues collected data from a nationally representative survey on health and nutrition, which included about 5,400 adults over age 21. Among other things, each was asked how much alcohol they drank the previous day.

The researchers found that 64 percent of men and 79 percent of women said they drank no alcohol at all that day, and another 18 percent of men and 10 percent of women drank within the recommended amounts.

Nine percent of men said they had three to four drinks the day before and 8 percent of women said they drank two to three alcoholic beverages, the researchers said.

The heaviest drinkers of all were the 8 percent of men who had five or more drinks, and 3 percent of women who had four or more.

"Overall the study confirms that rates of unhealthy alcohol use in the U.S. are significant," said Jennifer Mertens, a research medical scientist at Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, California, who was not part of the study.

Regularly drinking more than recommended levels is "linked to increased alcohol-related problems," Mertens wrote in an email to Reuters Health.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. So in other words, the methods these fuckers are using would count someone who goes out drinking up to 6 nights a week as zero if they happened to catch them on a night where they didn't drink anything the night before. I don't know why they're collecting data this way but there's definitely something strange going on. It's like a survey trying to ask girls how many men they've had sex with... there must be some miracles going on to make the numbers seem right.
