RE: Video games
SJW roster aside, Apex Legends is a pretty fun game.

It's well designed, has some depth, and is very oriented towards team play. Pretty much impossible to win playing solo so that disincentives folks from going rogue frequently. I play with a lot of randoms and the ping system and structure of the game really makes playing with randoms (especially without a mic) actually feasible and fun. There are still shitbags but you'll get that anywhere with randoms. Playing COD: Blackout by comparison with randoms is like herding cats (i.e. totally retarded).

The revive/recovery system also makes playing with friends way more pleasant since people don't just need to sit around and watch the entire game when they die.

Its free to play so it's not like you have to feed the SJW beast at all to play it. I highly recommend giving it a chance.

RE: Video games
Somehow I just now found about about this:

Warning, this guy is annoying, but most vidya geeks are, this is the best video on the subject. I can't believe it's 8 years old and I never found this before!

That led me down another rabbit hole, MSU-1 ROM mods. In a nutshell it's replacement of the 8 channel sampled music of the SNES with real PCM audio instead, enabling you to hear stuff like this:

Also MSU-1 is supported by this SNES cart that uses an SD card for storage, so you can actually play these games with the enhanced music on a REAL console!

Otherwise you need to use a certain emulator that supports it. So far my favorite is SNES9X, mainly because it also has a Wii port which also is able to play the MSU-1 tracks as well. Since they're the same emulator I can share save states and stuff between them.

Essentially this is what COULD have been if Sony and Nintendo had finished their SNES CD project, instead Sony bailed to create the Playstation and only non-working prototypes remain.

Also on the topic of video game music, enjoy these, I hope when Sam is done they'll made an MSU-1 PCM pack for all his remasters:

This was in the DKC PCM pack I downloaded, turns out they got it from the brand new super smash bros ultimate that came out in december:

My Super RetroCade arrives this week. 90 games baked-in plus an SD card slot for roms. I'm beyond stoked as there are some obscure titles I haven't played since my coin-op youth.

I work in the game dev industry, but overall I owe so much to gaming. It improved my hand-eye coordination and advanced problem solving skills in high school, catapulting past most of my classmates/teachers. It's also fucking fun

Playing through Bioshock again. It's like re-reading a favorite book. Atmosphere, story, action, setting, vibe, crazy twists, the game really has everything.

I've been so tempted to do this... and/or play through the Metro games for the first time. However I'm balls deep in Call of Duty's Blackout mode, I play it damn near every evening with my friends back home (online) An for me its hard to play two different FPS games at the same time. Cause I have the shooting mechanics of COD hardwired into my brain at this point. So I will just wait until I'm not so heavy into Blackout before I revisit the Bioshock series.

I'm highly considering buying that Final Fantasy 9 Xbox One version for nostalgia. I recall the game being great on PS1 and I made it to the 4th (final disc) and stopped playing it for some reason. I think its AMAZING that Nintendo and Xbox are becoming best buds... the rumor is they are going to bring Xbox Games pass to the Nintendo Switch

I played it again a year ago and its still as great as you remember it. I'd argue its one of the few games I've played that is perfect.

Nothing homo about what is probably the best game in that entire series, (the series creator even admitted recently it was his favourite and its easy to see why, the composer was the same). Everything just came together even more so than it usually did, and that's saying something.

A lot of tension and pretty dark undertones despite the cutesy look. The main cast get their asses handed to them over and over, but keep plugging away and it makes them all the more likeable. Look at the direction, the music, the care taken in the cut scenes, the editing. No voice acting so could immerse yourself like a book and imagine it yourself. A main character who is a playful cocky guy and memorable side characters (many of who are actually funny and have a great camradery with each other, the main 4 in particular are the best RPG party ever), nice strict roles for gameplay and exploration/big world map events that sync with story.

Square were the premier developer of their day in the 90's early 2000's aside from Rockstar.

Oh god the days when you felt like you you were robbing game developers and publishers of their money as opposed to the other way around.

This is still as incredible to watch years later and more stirring than anything that fantasy cinema produced in recent years, the buildup and trials and highs/low through out the game to this moment. It'd be one of the first games I'd play with children if I decide to have them. Great lessons told well.

Near end game spoilers:

They decided to use some ugly new font for the remaster as opposed to the old worldy writing font from the PS1. Why?

The intro sequence of the original Bioshock is probably the best opening in all of gaming.

The shooting mechanics and overall gameplay is kind of rough- but the atmosphere, story and voice acting make the experience unforgettable.

RE: Video games
On pure artistic merit the original Bioshock is undoubtedly one of the best games of all time. I actually felt guilty interacting with the setting, like I was putting my grubby mitts on a Rembrandt.

Infinite is incredible by itself but it's not up there with the original. I never actually finished it though. I quit when Elizabeth cut her hair.

My friends.

Summer of '03. Got a used Dreamcast that some guy was selling, came with "burned off" copies of games.

Fire up something called "Shenmue". Playing through a game unlike any other, loving it.

Then Ryu gets on a bus and....the journey continues in disc 2? WTF

My favorite was Infinite, what is yours?

Probably the first one because it just blew my mind and made me feel so many things, with the twist and the constant feeling that I was in danger and something could pop out and fuck me up at any time. I didn't realize they remastered BS1, I wish I had known that. I'll probably play that one in a few years.

I really like BS2 but since you play as Big Daddy the sense of danger wasn't really there IMO. Still really fun game and a solid sequel.

Infinite was also great but probably my least favorite. The setting was awesome and the graphics were great but it had more of an upbeat vibe since it was all sunny and in the sky.

The Witcher is for sure on my list, but I'll check out Dishonored as well.

Any recommendations for survival horror, with more of an emphasis on adventure and exploration (like Prey).

Resident Evil 7 is a pretty decent survival horror game.... Outlast is also a pretty damn good game in that genre. Playing Outlast at night with the lights off and a good headset on will is pretty intense. Plus you can probably pick it up for like $10 bucks

Prey is a very good and unique take on the genre so you may have a hard time finding one that falls in line with it.

Bloodbourne, lovecraftian victorian horror with blades and guns, same developers and type of gameplay as Dark Souls, but its a PS4 exclusive so YMMV on that one.

Alien Isolation with headphones is an anxiety producing piece of software like no other, you'll panic as you hear him skirt around the map as you lay in a vent praying he doesn't go poking. Its a hard game. Get the DLC's too, some of the best ever created (You get to basically play a recreation of a sequences in the last 3rd of the original Alien film), the actors and actresses came back for it. I've never seen a game recreate a film universe so perfectly like this one.

You can actually play this DLC before the actual game itself (which is set between Alien and Aliens)
