A useful site in finding out how much repairs cost is https://www.yourmechanic.com/. Plug in your car, type in the repair under Services, and it will give you a parts and labor cost. It appears to be similar to the costs of a small shop in my area (cheaper than big shops and dealerships).

I'm about to replace the timing chain and tensioners on my 07 Sport Trac (V8). Still runs well with 144k on it, but the chain is chattering a bit just above idle. It will cause damage if it's not fixed though. These Ford 4.6L engines are notorious for broken timing chain tensioners. I'll also be checking the cam phasers and looking for any other signs of trouble while I'm in there. It's also time for brake pads and rotors, so that's also in the plan.

If you're going to do your own work, it pays to have a spare vehicle, or at least someone who can give you a ride, and a dry place to do the work (garage, shed, barn or something), in case you run into something unexpected and the job takes longer than expected. It will happen, especially when you're learning.

The parts will cost me a few hundred bucks or so, but taking it to a stealership would probably be a couple thousand and I don't know what kind of Yahoo would be doing the work. It'll take me the better part of a weekend, but I'll know what I have and I'll save a chunk of change.

Especially if you live in a rural area. I don't think I'd go down the car repair road if I just had one car beyond basic oil changes.

Necessity is the mother of all invention. At times, having only one vehicle is precisely why I took repairs upon myself. It is often the fastest way to get the car back up and running for the lowest price in the shortest time.

One time I had to replace the evaporator for the AC on my truck. This is a $40 part. The labor would have cost well over $1000. I wanted working AC. It required removal of the dashboard. I removed the dashboard and replaced it along with the heater core and a few other things. Total cost was less than $200. Took two days but it was worth it.

I asked this in another thread, but does anyone know of a place that sells classic-ish cars (not some 60s thing, but just a cool-looking 80s Firebird or something) but retrofitted with efficient engines and whatever modern conveniences (a nicer stereo, bluetooth) possible? Does such a thing exist?

Yes, there are many places doing these type of builds, especially in the USA.
The quality of the work (therefore the reliability, practicality, and legality of the car) varies according to the depth of your pockets. From a junker with a crate motor fitted and a coat of paint, to a complete build of what is effectively a brand new car in an older bodyshell. https://madison.com/wsj/news/local/ringb...e685f.html
There are also companies like Art Morrison, making chassis and suspension components to make older vehicles handle and ride like new ones, and in some cases might be required for uprated engines to be legally fitted.

I don't really know the best places to start looking. Maybe Classic Auction sites like Barrett-Jackson

This one has a modern engine, plus 6 speed gearbox, upgraded 4 wheel disc brakes, modern seats, a/c, bluetooth etc etc

The Obama era vehicles are falling apart and costing tons of money.
2009-2016 will go down as the worst since the 80's garbage.
Quality of simple stuff like bearings and engine mounts are terrible and high tech VVT cam phasers and CVT transmissions dont hold up long enough.
These cars will go for dirt cheap soon. The regular normie is getting hosed.

You should see if the oil adapter gasket is leaking (is behind where the oil filter goes). These have a bad habit of breaking apart into pieces and clogging oil passages. I would take off the last camshaft cap towards the firewall in the passenger side cylinder head, and the cap towards the radiator side on the drivers cyl. head and verify that oil is flowing free. The 4.6s were great engines. You must have the 3 valve 4.6, I prefer the simpler 2 valve non phaser 4.6 Triton.
