Big time fan here from NJ. I watch most of the races and even the ones that come on in the middle of the night(Like Suzuka next week). My driver is Hamilton and I will follow him wherever he goes.

I hope he is making the right choice, he has been let down my Mclaren this year. He should be leading the championship or battling with Alonso for the lead.

Mercedes has not done much this year, I think they have one podium finish. So I hope he does not regret this move, at least his mate Rosberg will play ball with him. Sadly, though I think this is more about the global brand Mercedes more than racing.

RE: Any F1 fans here?
In the brief period Schumacher was gone, F1 completely transformed. Compared to today, when Schumacher first started in F1, it was like a free-for-all in terms of technology and development. A crucial member of the Brawn/Schumacher dream team, Rory Byrne is technically still on the payroll at Ferrari as a consultant. He was the Ferrari equivalent of Adrian Newey during the Schumacher reign. IIRC, he was with Brawn/Schumacher at Benetton years ago. No one knows what the corporate culture at Mercedes is like either. Are they like a lot of the big manufacturing teams where the board micromanages the team into the ground?

Hamilton's move is probably a good idea from a growth perspective. But they won't coddle and baby him like McLaren. Even under Whitmarsh he was coddled. Hamilton must also make real results happen at Mercedes or they're going to leave the sport and leave him high and dry. Some people say he could go to Ferrari, Red Bull, or Lotus. Ferrari won't have him until Alonso is long gone and they damn sure won't tolerate ANY shit from him. At Red Bull he'll be a number 2 unless Vettel is gone, and the same goes for Lotus.

I would hardly say Hamilton is being coddled at Mclaren, they are treating him like a step child to say the least. Whitmarsh he obviously pro Jenson and has not favoured Hamilton in the least bit.
Why would Hamilton leave if he was being taken care off?

He can go to any other team, Alonso/Vettel do not want to compete with him and Lotus would gladly take him.

RE: Any F1 fans here?
Wow, this is a shocker! To see the poster child of McClaren leave them to Mercedes! I'm lost for words. I would have expected him to go to a top team like Renault or even Red Bull to replace Webber next year. It's going to be very interesting to see how competitive the Mercedes car will be next year. Cause if it's not competitive enough to be with the big boys, I can see Lewis losing it as he has shown time and time again that he still is not mature enough. And that's what has been one of the main reasons of him not living up to expectations so far as he has mad talent. He is indeed a good challenger to Alonso. Speaking of Ferrari, my patience has reached its limits with Massa. He is more and more a liability to the team and because of him, Ferrari has no chance in the constructors title. Time to replace him next season. I would love to see Kimi back in Ferrari. With Fernando and him, they'd crush it all as they are 2 best drivers out there.

RE: Any F1 fans here?
^^^I think that Kimi has had enough of being the number 2 driver at Ferrari, especially now that team rules are legal!! Although Kimi being Kimi (i.e. kinda a strange semi-genius) he might just go back to Ferrari, put up with a lot of "Alonso is quicker than you" team radio comments........and still pull a second championship out of his ass. Smile
(BTW... "Vaca"--nice to hear from you again)

I also believe that MB hiring Hamilton is a sign that they are finally taking F1 seriously.
Old man Schumacher and Rosberg (look, I finally won a race!!)
were signed because they are German first, and racers second.
Great German press, but when you win one race in 2-3 years, it's time to finally get serious.
Hamilton is a great racer, and he will pull an Alonso for MB (getting another 2 sec. per lap out of a car).
They'll also set up the car for his aggressive driving style, meaning that Rosberg will be out in 1-2 years,
probably to be replaced by diResta who has a similar aggressive style.

Killer lap times in a modern F1 car is down to a few things.
The engine, the aerodynamics, and the driver(+setup+suspension design+ect. I know...but for the sake of this argument).
Mercedes always had the engine. Other engines may at times be at parity, but they were never stronger.
As a driver Hamilton is unquestionably in the top 5. We could debate all day about who's the best driver (Alonso)
but Hamiltons' well in contention and certainly talented enough to win another championship.
And then there's the aero package.
Brawn seems to find new loopholes in the rules. They all do it, but a lot of Brawns' new solutions pass FIA scrutiny and are deemed legal.
(I know that Button is quite grateful of that.) I'm not sure if the wily old man knows the general thought process of the technical judges,
or they're showing a bit of favoritism.
But because of his knack, I'm guessing that the 2013 MB car will have some new aero trick debuting in Australia that will cause some controversy,
give Hamilton the win and set all he other teams back 4 months.
Brawn probably has some great ideas in his mental vault that he didn't want to waste until MB signed a championship caliber driver.
(Note that he didn't give Button his best work until his(Brawns) future in F1 and HIS OWN MONEY was on the line.)

RE: Any F1 fans here?
Love reading your insights on F1 Tyrell. I agree with everything you wrote except 1 thing:
Hamilton already has a car capable of winning the title but his own lack of maturity has been the main cause of his lack of success. The McLaren is probably the most performing car this season as it's been showing in their domination in the Qualification sessions so far where they had the most poles of all. Sure a couple of times, the car had mechanical failures like the last 2 grand prix in Singapore and Monza but overall, the car has been very reliable. If Lewis had a quarter of the maturity of Button, he would have won at least another 2 titles by now and a few more in the coming years.

I'm a big fan of Jenson but he has no where near the talent of Lewis. And Lewis is easily among the top 5 drivers of the current generation. My top 5 is Button, Lewis, Vettel, Kimi and Perez (I really like him, he's going to make a lot of noise next year in a top car! I would have also added Kubica in that list if he were still in F1; btw, any news if he's coming back at all in F1? Would be a shame to lose such a madly talented driver)...

Only reason I didn't include Alonso in that top 5 as he is in a different league of his own, in the category of the likes of Prost, Schummacher of pre-retiremment, Fangio and the eternal and immortal Senna.

You're right that the first title that Kimi won or rather stole from the hands of Alonso and Hamilton in 2007 was simply unreal. Coming back from 30 points back with 5 races to go and in those days, a win was only 10 points unlike the 25 points of now.

I'm surprised to see Perez go to McLaren and not Ferrari specially given the relationship between Sauber and Ferrari. He was already touted as a future Ferrari pilot next season to replace Massa but now, McLaren stole him right from the hands of Ferrari. What a move! Now that Perez is gone, who do you think will replace Massa next season? I like Kobayashi, has a lot of talent and is among the best in passing but does he have the shoulders to handle the pressure of driving the mighty and legendary Red car? If I were Dominicali, my first pick would be Kimi, 2nd would have been Kubica but he has been out for a long time, so that rules him out, unfortunately. What a pity as Robert has all the quality of a great Ferrari pilot. And if they keep Massa, then the one to be fired is Dominicali. I still have not swallowed nor forgiven him for his deadly mistake in Abu Dhabi in 2010 gifting the title that was 3/4 Alonso's to Vettel.

One guy I can't stand is Maldonado, this guy is a pure calamity and constant danger to all. He should be replaced next year by a less dangerous driver. Would love to see Kubica back in the game even with Williams, who have seemed to made some good progress from their awful season last year.

Anyways, I'm very much looking forward to next season specially with the new Ferrarri which they've been working on it for the past 2 years and to see how competitive will be Mercedes Benz with Hamiton. Would be interesting to see whether Red Bulls will be able to stay in the top. If not, expect Vettle to look at his options and I wouldn't be surprised to see him at Ferrari in 2014...but now I'm getting a litle bit ahead of myself. Let's finish with this season first and with the final of the seasonn, it's going to be very interesting. Desite not having the best car, as long as he has a half decent car, Alonso will be there and very difficult to beat for the title.

Might seem off topic, but is formula 1 the reason why European super cars are better in quality and more expensive than American cars?

For example, Mclaren promises power steering (i think that's the name for it) and other bunch of stuff that formula 1 has for the cars they make.

Any F1 fans in here? Have you guys watched the Spanish GP today?Thoughts? I'll post mine later as I'm about to head out.

Awesome to see Kimi and Fernando battling it as they are the 2 best and most experienced drivers out there! Awesome to see Vettel finally showing his limits as he was only winning due to him having the best car by far. Sad to see the Mercedes being so weak in the race. Felt bad for Lewis. Must have been excruciatingly hopeless to see going from first line to 12th. Wow!

Didn't see todays race but i'm following f1 like always this season. The only motorsport i really like.
In my opinion, it Will be a troika of vettel, alonso and my favourite Raikonnen fighting for the title this season. Massa doesn't seem to consistently be able to get the results like them, and Webber is somewhat alienated by his team in comparison to Vettel. Hamilton maybe, well he's a bit off the pace but i think the other guys are better. Rosberg had pole for today's grand prix, so obviously mercedes is a decent car, just depends on lewis.
Can't really say that i don't like any teams or drivers though, although i agree Maldonado can be a liability.
Monte Carlo grand prix in 11 days. Boom!

Boring race to say the least, Alonso's car looked like a rocket today. Raikonnen looked pretty good today, he was actually racing. Vettel who I don't like will still win it all at the end of the season.

RE: Any F1 fans here?
I have been a fan since the mid 80's (the days of the turbo cars & the screaming V12's). IMO the best seasons were 98-99, since the battles between Schu. & Hak. were epic. Currently, the two drivers I follow closely are Vettel & Hamilton. I wanted to catch the race yesterday but I couldnt wake up early enough to watch.

Me, too.

I remember rooting for Nigel Mansell in the Williams car with the red 5 when I was that young, primarily because he was the British driver.
