How do they get away with this shit?

That's like pre-packaging a trojan with your latest OS.

Many of those features are standard in many RATs (Remote Access Tools) used to spy and/or fuck with people.

RE: Thoughts on Windows 10?
I recently bought a new laptop. It's a pretty solid core i7 rig with some crazy 2gb nvidia card. Like my previous experiences I tried to install Windows 7 for obvious reasons.

Terribly, this laptop was too new for the Windows 7 CD installer! I had to make a USB installer and then finagle in some specialised USB 3 drivers which were never included with the Windows 7 installer.

I eventually hacked it all together and got Windows 7 working. Then I set about the process of installing the drivers. Egad what I nightmare, I got everything working but I was experiencing some nasty DPC latency on my audio. It made listening to any sound a complete nightmare.

I spent a few days and eventually gave up defeated. I opted to instead install Windows 10. Thankfully, you can still download it for free if you're a "special needs" individual.

Overall, an astoundingly painless install process. I was even able to use my Windows 7 Pro key with Windows 10 to enable the professional version (deferred updates)! I was very surprised.

Driver support out of the box is incredible! Everything worked right down to the wifi. I only had to run the Nvidia driver updater.

I opted to run classic shell instead of adjusting to the Windows 10 UI. I loathe Microsoft for trying to change a good UI with 8 and 10. They should have introduced the "tiles" as tablet mode instead of forcing it into keyboard and mouse users.

Windows 10 boots a lot faster than my 10.11 on my Macbook Pro. Both have SSDs in them.

I am very surprised and enjoying my Windows 10 experience. I disable most of the telemetry during the first set up process. Not particularly difficult. There are a few odds and ends here, but i'll leave them on. I only use this PC for gaming.

RE: Thoughts on Windows 10?
I got a dell xps 9550 as well as an older but powerful desktop and they both run win 10 smoothly, id never go back - ive used it all, windows xp, 7, 8, 8.1 and used to have a macbook as well, for me atleast - windows 8, 8.1 sucked, but windows 10s something entirely different - its like a perfectly polished version of windows 8, its what windows 8 aspired to be - but ultimately failed to be - atleast for me - its a joy to use.

Up until windows 10 i honestly thought mac had the superior OS for daily usage - but upgrading to a touch enabled windows 10 laptop blew everything i've ever had out of the water, macbook included. Keep in mind that the touch functionality is part of why i love it, itjust makes it a joy to use - but apart from that its got a great search functions and just looks fucking sexy. I never experienced any bugs either and its being updated continually. Guess it depends on your hardware and usage - but if you can run it - and use your computer casually - reading the news, browsing, watching netflix , downloading stuff, editing documents maybe some light gaming i'd say go for it - 100% you're not gonna regret it.. dont really see how windows xp, 7 or 8 should have any advantages over win 10 for the casual user

I ended up changing to it.

Had trouble with my laptop. Switched to Windows 10.
The experience is like that of Windows 7. Did not see (apart from UX) any major changes.
I also use touch but not that much.

RE: Thoughts on Windows 10?
Haven't read through the whole thread. Just bought a new Laptop with Windows 10 on a pentium chip. Worked fine at first, but then got really really slow.

Now, its back to okay. Apparently it was downloading updates (for the new computer) that were not previously installed. It never indicated it was updating so I thought it was just naturally slow.

I've read reviews of people returning their Windows 10 to the stores because it was so slow.
But Now I believe its slow because it was updating in the background, without telling users.

So, now I'm seriously considering downgrading back down to Windows 7 because I like it better, and don't want to deal with the constant updates for Win10. I also think the Pentium chip can't handle Win10 as well as Win7.

Does anyone have any experience un-installing Win10 from a new laptop? and then re-installing win 7?

Apparently, I can use my old win 7 key from my old laptop and re-use the key for the new Pentium laptop.

So, anyone have any advice on the pros and cons of un-installing win 10 from a new pre-installed computer?

Why I removed Windows 10 from my laptop and installed 8.1.

Plus the design of Windows 10 is horrible and strains my eyes after using it for a bit. I could use Windows 7 and 8.1 all day without feeling any sort of eye strain. But not 10.

Use any Linux distro over Windows 10, it's simple.

Very funny, because I just did that, and I was going to write about it.
I used an old Laptop with Windows 7. I liked 7, unlike Windows 10 that I was able to use from time to time.
My laptop gave up, and I bought a nice and cheap Acer Swift 3, but for the price, it came with no OS. And for this kind of new computer, there will be no drivers for W7, and I didn't want to install W10.

So my choice was... Ubuntu 18.04LTS (LTS = long term support, updates are guaranteed until 2023).
  • Got installed and worked flawless out of the box.
  • Much better user experience than Windows 10.
  • Not a thing that I would be able to do with Windows and not with Ubuntu.
  • Not a commercial OS. No "black box" effect of something you don't really know what it does.
  • No tricky privacy policy, no wondering what personal data are intercepted and used by the OS editor.
  • In case you really really need to use some very specific application available on Windows only, you can install VirtualBox to have a Windows XP/7/10/whatever inside.
  • You have a nice feeling that you are not feeding the beast and use some freedom.

You prefer to use Windows 8.1? Gross. That's easily one of Microsoft's worst iterations of Windows to date, right behind Vista.

Anyway, since this thread started Windows 10 is out and it's pretty good. Also, as far as the data collection stuff goes, I stand by my original statement on that:

All that said - I still use Windows 7 on my audio recording workstation and old gaming/graphic design rig, and I use Windows 10 on my laptop and work computer. If I played newer games I would be forced to switch because of DirectX compatibility.

If I could, I would rather use Windows 7, one of the best OS that Microsoft has made. Since my laptop drivers aren't compatible with Windows 7, I'm stuck with 8.1

I agree that Windows Vista is one of the worst

RE: Thoughts on Windows 10?
Is anyone here using Linux Mint? I'm getting a new laptop next week and it has W10 license, which after brief introduction to this system, I plan to only leave for eventual gaming purposes and to run applications that are less efficient on Linux.

I used Mint back in the 2012 and was pretty happy. I have also tried Ubuntu and it was pretty solid, but I wonder what is currently the best distro for day-to-day use with a pretty simple configuration. I mean, I'm not a programmer, and my time is kind of limited early, so I don't want to spend too much time on setting it up and adjusting it either. Seems like Mint should still be a perfect solution.

As for Windows - XP and 7 for life.

Perhaps you can use this questionnaire to find a fitting linux distro...

RE: Thoughts on Windows 10?
I see a lot of concern about Win10 privacy matters but did someone tried to google how to disable the telemetry on windows 10 (great posts by ManVsMachine) ?

You can find executable doing the work for you or you can do it manually or even using scripts.

[Image: 687474703a2f2f692e696d6775722e636f6d2f57...6a2e706e67]

And for those thinking that win7 & 8.1 don't have privacy troubles you might want to check this one, same for ubuntu:

Quote:Ubuntu Telemetry-Free, Privacy and Secure

This script does:
System update and software upgrade
Amazon & advert web apps removing
AptUrl Removing
Guest session disable for LightDM
Remote login disable for LightDm
DNS encryption
FireWall (UFW)
Antivirus (ClamAV)
Brute Force protection (Fail2Ban)
Basic Telemetry Removing (ZeitGeist) and unsecure libs and pre-installed software with high and potentional risks (like, for example, Vino - VNC server for remote desktop sharing and system control or libhttp-daemon-perl - http server for perl or gdbserver - remote tool for gnome debug. Some software have a potentional risks (better to remove, if you don't use it, because of opening ports, for example. Please, read the comments in the script and use only strings, that you need)
Additional recomendations (about firefox plugins, sandbox for software, own latest kernel from sources for your system, etc.)

Tell them too much, they wouldn't understand; tell them what they know, they would yawn.
They have to move up by responding to challenges, not too easy not too hard, until they paused at what they always think is the end of the road for all time instead of a momentary break in an endless upward spiral

Using Linux since 96 during the IRC wars days. Been running the Linux Mint Debian based LMDE 1 and later 2 for years. MATE desktop because I prefer the old school gnome 2 feeling.

For newer guys I recomend the Mint versión based on Ubuntu releases only because it can be a bit easier and some drivers come preinstalled that are not on the Debian version. I prefer stability though so Debian does well for me.

Great, thanks. I will go for Debian-based Mint then as I was really happy with this distro back in the days, and I don't mind putting a bit of extra work to get it all up and running.
