Gawker Publishes Article Outing Competitor CFO As Gay - Outrage Ensues
Apparently yesterday, Gawker Media posted a story outing an executive at one of Gawker's competitors, Condé Nast CFO David Geithner (brother of former Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner) as gay and stating that he attempted to arrange a $2,500 liaison with a male escort.

Amid public outrage, Gawker CEO Nick Denton proceeded to order the story pulled less than 24 hours later, overruling Gawker's editorial board in the process.

Our old friend Milo over at Breitbart weighs in: Here Are All The People Who Should Sue Gawker Media

Quote:What is it with Gawker? Are they just incompetent, or are they actually trying to get sued into bankruptcy?

The odious blog network has just added yet another powerful name to the growing list of people who ought to sue them, running a story outing Condé Nast CFO David Geithner as gay, including what purports to be a set of text messages between Geithner and a gay porn star who works as a male escort.

Geithner has a wife and kids, and Gawker has offered no public interest justification for outing him. He’s not a public figure or law enforcement official and has never spoken against LGBT rights. So there’s no argument he’s a hypocrite worth exposing. He’s just an accountant – for one of Gawker’s commercial rivals.

Worse, it seems the story may not even be true. According to at least one source, the male escort used by Gawker is a conspiracy theorist who delights in leading journalist and politicians astray with bogus stories.

Geithner, for his part, denies that any text messages between the “escort” and himself took place: “I don’t know who this individual is. This is a shakedown,” he told Gawker. They went ahead with the story anyway.

And Gawker knew it was a shakedown from the very beginning. The “escort” specifically told the blogging network that Geithner promised to take one of the escort’s conspiracy theories to President Obama if he got Gawker to kill the story.

Let that sink in for a second: the conspiracy theorist’s plan was to use Gawker as leverage over Geithner. And Gawker acted as a willing participant in gay extortion. A man’s reputation was held hostage at blogpoint and an editor went ahead and pulled the trigger, perhaps even knowing the story was shaky.

Evidently, Gawker is the kind of place where they hold up pictures of Sabrina Erdely and say: “Now this is how you do it!”

Many of my Twitter followers use “archive links” to deny advertising revenue to sites they dislike. It’s a way of producing a photocopy, if you like, of web content that does not generate new clicks, and therefore ad revenue, when readers visit.

I have in the past resisted using services like that out of journalistic solidarity. But after Gawker’s appalling story about David Geithner, there is no more solidarity to be had with them. No reputable journalist can recognise that company as a responsible reporting outlet.

From now on, it’s archive.today all the way.

It’s as though Gawker CEO Nick Denton has a death wish. I mean, I know liberals are obsessed with ending life, whether by abortion or euthanasia, but I didn’t realise that extended to their media properties.

Gawker’s latest blunder even threatens to turn GamerGate, the hashtag movement who cost the media company seven figures in revenue after an advertiser boycott last year, into unlikely heroes. A list of Gawker’s advertisers created by GamerGate last year is currently going viral on Twitter, even appearing in USA Today.

Journalists from other publications quickly began piling on.

Recognising the magnitude of the disaster, other Gawker writers have started to run for cover.

But it’s too late. This couldn’t have come at a worse time for Gawker. The company is currently facing a $100m lawsuit over their release of Hulk Hogan’s sex tape. Again, no public interest justification has been offered besides mentioning Hogan’s celebrity and his penchant for machismo bragging.

For Gawker to remind the world of its reputation for poorly researched, personally-invasive reporting at this moment is utter madness. But, you know what, I’m happy to play Dr. Kevorkian to Gawker’s suicidal tendencies.

Geithner and Hulk Hogan are well within their rights to sue. But they’re not the only ones...

--------------------------------

You’re probably getting the message.

By all rights, Gawker ought to be drowning in lawsuits. But it isn’t just the complete disregard for privacy rights and basic standards of journalistic accuracy that make Gawker’s wrongdoing so egregious. It’s the rank hypocrisy.

Gawker spends much of its time lecturing millennials — the most tolerant generation alive — on why they should be less sexist, racist, and homophobic. When they cover expressions of millennial culture, like Reddit, 4chan, and GamerGate, they will make use of whatever sparse evidence they have to spin the story into one of sexism and racism.

Yet for all their virtue-signalling, it is Gawker who harasses people, it is Gawker who abuses people, and it is Gawker who slut-shames and gay-shames. And it is Gawker who repeatedly and habitually outs gay people, despite previously condemning the practice.

That this empire of digital narcissism and hypocrisy was ever taken seriously as a bastion of social justice is surely one of the most grimly ironic quirks in all of media history.

The base story, from USA TODAY: Link

Quote:AN FRANCISCO — Gawker.com said Friday afternoon it was removing an article about the CFO of Conde Nast allegedly soliciting sex from a gay porn star.

The decision came after the news and gossip site drew heavy criticism Friday for revealing life-changing details about a private individual's life, for no clear social purpose.

David Geithner, a married father of three and brother of former Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, denied the allegations.

Gawker nevertheless reported that Geithner planned to go to Chicago to meet a gay porn star and escort, and was prepared to pay $2,500 for the encounter. David Geithner reportedly cancelled the meet-up after the escort tried to get him to use his political connections to help with a housing dispute. Previously, the anonymous escort had asked Republican Sen. Ted Cruz's office for help with his housing dispute, the online article said.

n a text to Gawker, David Geithner said he had no knowledge of the individual and said, "this is a shakedown."

On Friday, Gawker founder Nick Denton said he regretted the decision to publish the piece and acknowledged internal dissension over the move. He said the post "was true and well-reported," but said it "does not rise to the level" of publication worthy.

"This action will not turn back the clock," Denton wrote. "David Geithner’s embarrassment will not be eased. But this decision will establish a clear standard for future stories. It is not enough for them simply to be true. They have to reveal something meaningful. They have to be true and interesting."

In a self-assessment of sorts, Denton said Gawker has changed and must move beyond its roots as a digital muckraker.

Gawker now has an "influence and audience that demands greater editorial restraint," he wrote.

The escort's story, told to Gawker writer Jordan Sargent after the escort was rebuffed, drew a torrent of criticism on Gawker's Facebook page and Twitter. The story itself had been intermittently unavailable on the site late Thursday and early Friday. Some critics shared it via archive.is so that people interested in the issue didn't need to send traffic to Gawker.

Among the comments:

Journalist Glenn Greenwald tweeted: "I'm a fan of Gawker & several of its journalists, but that article is reprehensible beyond belief: it's deranged to publish that."

Re/Code co-executive editor Kara Swisher tweeted: "An appalling act of gay shaming disguised as a story -- thought we were way past this crap."

Gawker senior writer Adam Weinstein tweeted: "I had no part in this. I would not have chosen to run it as is."

Readers pointed out that publicizing Geithner's possible sexual orientation did nothing for the public good: he's not a public official or political candidate who has advocated against gay rights, for instance.

"This guy is not an antigay politician whose hypocrisy needs to be outed. Why would anyone care if he wants to hire an escort?" wrote reader Mike Johnson of Los Angeles on Gawker's Facebook page.

Gawker editor-in-chief Max Read had responded to the initial volley of comments, saying "given the chance gawker will always report on married c-suite executives of major media companies f**cking around on their wives."

Natasha Vargas-Cooper, senior reporter for Gawker affiliate Jezebel, also defended its publication. "Stories don't need an upside. Not everyone has to feel good about the truth. If it's true, you publish."

Gawker's motto is "Today's gossip is tomorrow's news". Early Friday, "Gawker" was the second most popular term on Twitter in the U.S.

Some irate readers suggested the outrage be directed at Gawker's advertisers.

The online discussion drew in some critics of Gawker and its affiliates from a past issue — its involvement in a long-running online controversy over the treatment of women in gaming, and video-game journalism, that's loosely referred to as #gamergate. The Twitter account that advocated targeting Gawker's advertisers linked to a website, "wiki.gamergate.me," whose supporters advocate targeting the advertisers of Gawker and other blogs.

The online furor comes amid a fresh debate about the line between free expression on the Internet, and curbing harmful and hateful treatment of individuals online. Reddit's new CEO told readers this week that the site was never meant to be a bastion of free speech, a direct response to complaints from the site's users after ex-CEO Ellen Pao curbed some hate speech on the site.

At the same time, the public transformation of Caitlyn Jenner as a woman has brought discussion of transgender and gay issues to the forefront of mainstream media.

First Ellen Pao gets fired from Reddit - now Gawker fucks up big time.

As much as we may be losing the culture war, we've been stacking up a fair number of victories on the Internet for the last while.

What Gawker did here is the absolute lowest of the low things journalists can do. Had this been done anywhere in the old media, heads would have rolled.

Now you might think, "We don't care much about gay issues here -- so no skin off our backs." But it's not that simple. As the above quote illustrates, when you throw one standard out the window, the rest follow.

Not outing gay men was a big standard. And not "setting up" men in escort "stings" was another (that's best left to the police -- if it's done at all). If those rather serious things don't matter anymore, you can bet that journalists will be:

1). Quoting people off the record.

2). Fabricating quotes.

3). Defaming people based on innuendo (this already happened to me thanks to one of Gawker's idiotic publications, Idolator).

4). Fabricating entire stories.

All of us has probably seen every one of these things done time and again. I sure have. But expect more because this has a ripple effect.

For example, when NBC sees that Gawker didn't adhere to journalistic tradition yet got "zillions of Web hits," they'll loosen their own standards a bit. ABC will follow. Then come the newspapers who compete with their online sites. All of a sudden the news gets like an episode of "Dr. Oz" or "Maury."

Since some of us are in the news now and again, this will affect us. I already got hit (as I mentioned) and I don't wish this on anyone. I'm glad my local library has back issues of old magazines and newspapers because people can at least look back and see that journalism was once a halfway decent field.

Gawker is simply doing what trashy English rags have done for decades. Slander first, settle later.

This includes the phone hacking scandal and the "oh my lord Mr celebrity sucks dick, more on page 10" headlines. They have bottomless pits of money and its all paid for by advertising revenue and investors.

I definitely think Roosh and other like him have definitely done a lot to try and stem the tide.

But it seems in some of these instances (Gawker and Reddit), they are mainly self inflicted wounds. I'm not complaining, I'll take it!

I think this is what happens when movements pick up too much momentum, as you add people they tend to bring down the overall movement's intelligence. And more stupid shit happens because with all the attention whoring possibilities, it is hard to not pull the trigger to get some of the attention.

Let's hope the layers of idiots at these companies keep shooting themselves.

The decline of Reddit and Gawker is guaranteed, which is why I don't spend much energy attacking them. Once a system starts declining, individuals make the wrong corrections which merely accelerate the death.

Unfortunately, Buzzfeed will survive and grow stronger than ever. Based on readership and ideology, they are far more damaging than Gawker. During the gamergate attack on Gakwer, Buzzeed has been allowed to fortify their defenses, and they are far more competently managed. They'll probably go into TV/cable or original productions soon. All straight male characters will be portrayed by gay actors, I figure.

Buzzfeed has been catching more attention in KiA since they've put a ton of hitpieces out. Last one was about discrediting an upcoming debate gamergate will be having with the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). I wouldn't be suprised to see them focus on Vox/Buzzfeed once Hulk Hogan puts the final leg drop on Gawker. These clickbait sites all target woman and if you want to hurt their pockets you need to find them doing examples of anti-woman/anti-gay things.

I recall seeing something where reddit no longer allows links from Gawker and the rest of the shitty sites they own.

Reddit is owned by Conde Naste.

Take from that what you may.

RE: Gawker Publishes Article Outing Competitor CFO As Gay - Outrage Ensues
I've taken three things from this thread:

1) Indeed, lets go back to being 'voiceless' (in terms of social media) as we were 10 years ago. Was it really that bad? No. Social media is the worst thing that the internet created. Democracy is probably the best form of government, but it is the rule of the masses. And it's crazy, but the rule of the masses via politicians make them look like angels compared to the millennial fascists that social media narcissism has created. If we're living in democracy, then I'd actually rather the 'elites' speak for us, rather than blue haired wackos.

2) I wish MikeCF had paid, somehow, to take Sam Biddle to some jurisdiction outside of US-realm, and beaten the shit out of him. Properly hurt him. He's a despicable piece of shit. The fact he has a career after what he (and others) have done over the last few years is revolting. He's a cunt, and deserves to be either physically harmed, or at least have his career ruined. Matt Binder is another...but perhaps we can wait for another day.

3) I'd like everyone who hates Gawker (including me) to put money together to destroy them. Buzzfeed is the next target, and the most relevant one because Gawker will probably fall soon. Buzzfeed is the most pathetically SJW-reliant institution on the web, and it needs to be destroyed. Though, at this point, we don't have the power to get rid of it.

Gawker has removed the article at Nick Denton's request:

http://gawker.com/conde-nasts-cfo-tried-...1718364339

Quote:Against the objections of Gawker Media’s editorial leadership, this post was removed on July 17, 2015.

Denton's statement:

http://nick.kinja.com/taking-a-post-down-1718581684

Quote:The point of this story was not in my view sufficient to offset the embarrassment to the subject and his family. Accordingly, I have had the post taken down. It is the first time we have removed a significant news story for any reason other than factual error or legal settlement

Even though it removed the article, Gawker received millions of views related to this story. The article would be still standing if Gawker hadn't faced such universal criticism. But the only reason that this story, and not the countless others like showing Brett Favre's dick or revealing the identity of a previously anonymous Reddit user, received such blowback was because this one involved a homo. The incentives are there for more sleazy articles. This controversy isn't enough to change Gawker's standards. It's a site built on controversies. But it has made Gawker a mainstream target now.

According to one Charles Johnson, it was all a hoax which Gawker fell for

So they have now libeled a well connected man on the eve of their trial with Hulk Hogan.

The unbelievable Gawker hatred towards Reddit now makes sense.

They're using the bully pulpit in an attempt to destroy a rival business and all of their associated properties.

Thing is, there isn't much to do on that front. GG already lit the fires on that one because Gawker blamed Reddit and by proxy Conde Naste for those attacks.

Gawker on Gawker:

http://gawker.com/tommy-craggs-and-max-r...1719002144

"Tommy Craggs, the executive editor of Gawker Media, and Max Read, the editor-in-chief of Gawker.com, are resigning from the company. In letters sent today, Craggs and Read informed staff members that the managing partnership’s vote to remove a controversial post about the CFO of Condé Nast—a unprecedented act endorsed by zero editorial employees—represented an indefensible breach of the notoriously strong firewall between Gawker’s business interests and the independence of its editorial staff. Under those conditions, Craggs and Read wrote, they could not possibly guarantee Gawker’s editorial integrity."

I thought editorial meant things like fact checking.

And integrity...I don't really wanna go nuts on that point. Would just be a wall of text.

Oh and...

I heard that Gawker won the Hogan lawsuit.

Can anyone fill me in on the latest on that front?

I wasn't aware it had even started yet. I have heard that even if they win, their liability insurance cover is spent.......

I think this is what you might be referring to:

Quote:Gawker won its lawsuit against the F.B.I. on Wednesday when a federal judge in Florida ordered the bureau and the Executive Office of United States Attorneys to give the media company evidence related to an F.B.I. investigation into Hulk Hogan's sex tape.

As a result of the ruling, evidence related to the recording—evidence that was discovered during a now-defunct F.B.I. investigation—could find its way into Hogan's invasion of privacy suit against Gawker.

It is hilarious to see these self-important twats (Read and Craggs) prattle on and on about journalistic ethics and integrity. The irony really is lost on them.
